Genesis Collection Coming to PS2 and PSP in November

I just caught this little gem over on Joystiq:

According to this link, a compilation of Genesis games is in development for PlayStation 2 and PSP. There will be 28 games, plus three more "unlockable" games. They also gave a partial list of games:

• Shinobi II
• Sonic the Hedgehog
• Golden Axe I, II, and III
• Virtua Fighter 2
• Altered Beast
• Ecco the Dolphin
• Phantasy Star

It's supposed to be released this November.

I wonder why none of the other major video game news sites have reported this? In any case, this is a pleasant surprise! I'd love to find out what other games will be included.

That's a pretty good game listing there (minus VF 2 and AB), and those are only 9 of the 31 games. Combined with the second Capcom Classics Collection, it'll be one Hell of a season for retro gaming.

After the Gradius Collection PSP, I've come to the conclusion that I just don't like retro comps. I play them for two minutes, and become bored to death. Even if it's games I played and loved in my youth. I always did want to try the original Ecco the Dolphin though...

This should be awesome although I expect half the games will probably be less than stellar choices(like Altered Beast, Golden Axe III and VF2 listed there).

I hope that "Shinobi II" is supposed to be Shinobi III and not Revenge of Shinobi if the collection doesn't have both. Revenge is more likely though as Sega has re-released it a bunch of times. I wonder which Phantasy Star game they meant too. The original was technically available on Genesis but numbers 2-4 seem more likely.

I will probably get it for PSP since I don't bother with emulation on portables and for console I'll just play the real thing.

Am I the only one left w/4 Genesis'? Do you really need a PS2 or a PSP to play Genesis games!? This is insane. The games cost about $2 - $5 a cart. The system is $10 -$15. Am I missing something!?

$2x28= $56+$10=$66. Plus it's not all on one disk for you.

VHS only cost $2-5 nowadays, too. Why the fuck are people buying DVDs?

Lets see:

1) It's easy money for those involved...
2) Not everyone had or still has a Genesis.
3) Not everyone knows of or is willing to emulate.
4) For someone that already owns a PS2, this game is cheaper than buying a Genesis and said games. For easy math, if a Genesis is $10.00 and each game on the compilation is $2.00, then (31 x $2.00) + $10.00 = $72.00. Most likely, this game's gonna be coming in at less than thirty.
5) Not everyone has enough room to put all their systems in one area, so being able to play said games on a system that'd most likely be hooked up already is appealing.

There's also the likely possiblility that this may well contain bonus materials and the ability to save state. So there you go.

Edit: I encluded the three bonus games in my pricing.

Yeah, but how many games are people going to finish? The whole compilation? I think not. Saving would be a bonus, but wouldnt that be cheating the integrity of the original games?

What does that have to do with anything? If it has 10 games worth playing, and 20 games that i could mess around with for 5 minutes and decide i don't like, it'd still be better than going to the trouble of finding a Genesis and 10 games i think i'll like. Plus, those things break eventually.

There could be some other games in the pack that most people in the States haven't tried yet, like Golden Axe III (not the best, but still playable- just don't get your hopes up too high with it).

If the Thunder Force series appears in this pack, I am there. Thunder Force IV on PSP = The Win. Please license it, Sega.

i was just thinking about that. thunder force 4 is the only reason i still pull out the genny every so often. that and landstalker. i think tf4 was the last genny game i bought, too. found it a couple years ago for like 5 bucks. it would be nice to see a thunderforce collection, though. tf5 included 'cause i didn't get to play much of that when it came out.

A much better version of this collection came to my Xbox 2 years ago and my PC 5 years ago. This is not impressive.

Sonic CD is on the Sonic Gems Collection disc. I think it's on the Gamecube.

Speaking of Sonic the Hedgehog, it just seems like a formality to put it in, considering it's been in numerous other compilation discs.

I'm waiting for them to put the Sonic arcade game on one of these things.

I think it is on the one with sonic cd. But I could be wrong.

unless it's unlockable on sonic gems i haven't seen it. i didn't think sonic cd was that great when i played it on the gems collection. i'd rather play sonic 2.

The emulation in these Sega things has been awful since Smash Pack. Why do you guys think Sega will learn to program now?

Same here, but I do actually like playing them on the original hardware. Emulation and compilations never did anything for me. Also, I'm willing to bet I already own the vast majority of games on that compilation.

It's not really much different than when a record or movie company re-issues stuff and sells it various ways. In both cases it brings stuff back to the market which is a good thing if it's quality.

You're thinking of Sonic Mega Collection, which is mostly focused around the MD/Genesis Sonic carts. Sonic Gems Collection focuses around the offshoot Sonic games (Sonic The Fighters, Sonic CD and Sonic R)... although, the versions of Sonic CD and Sonic R appearing on that disc are the PC ports, not the M/S-CD and Saturn originals.

Which is exactly why Naka had said time and time again that they hadn't ported System 32 Sega Sonic to a home console. They (Sonic Team) just couldn't tune the play-control to an analog stick correctly (not that it really matters much as Sega Sonic takes all of 15-20 minutes to play through and is painfully repeditive in both execution and design).


And why are we getting yet another MD/Genesis comp? Did Sega lose all of their original arcade PCBs upon which many of these games were based? Capcom had the right idea with their recent collections... give us the ARCADE games. I'd much rather play through the arcade rev of Golden Axe, or it's 4-player sequel.

I have to agree. Unless this collection is going to include some translated imports like Surging Aura or some other rarities, I don't really see the need for this.

If Sega wants my interest, they'll give me an arcade compilation with true versions of ESWAT, Power Drift, Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder, Moonwalker; and all those other arcade gems that never made it home intact or at all.

ESWAT is better on Genesis, IMO.

I have emailed Sega about Bittorrenting their arcade roms.

Will you guys lick the UMD version when it comes out because it's on PSP?

If it's anything like the DC Smash pack and the Sega Classics for PS2, no thanks.

The games weren't the problem more how bad the emulation was. The sound was so off it was comical, streets of rage two is especially glaring.

Seriously. For even more fun, try hunting down an image of the emulator itself extracted from the disc and try it with any GenROMs you have. It's pretty fucking funny.

Even funnier is the fact that homebrewers made a better emulator for it.

Not to bitch or anything, but I'd rather Sega focus more on the remakes (via Sega Ages) than just releasing another collection.

I'll probably still end up getting it though, especially if it ends up having PS4.

You're right Sega didn't develop them directly, but they fund Sega Ages 2500 and I believe own the company. I have heard they had a hand in some of the remakes, as well. If Sega wanted to they could do more in this area.

Yeah, the remakes that have hit the states have been mostly lackluster (Golden Axe anyone?). However, all I was trying to say was that I'd rather see the remaining re-makes, as well as some new ones, than just the same old 16-bit games I've already played. Who knows? Some of them might actually be good.

What makes less sense is a lot of these games were arcade games yet they use the worse genesis versions anyway.

I suppose they port the Genesis versions because more people had played those in their homes.... So nostalgia is more fitting in that sense. But I would rather have the arcade revs too. Oh wait, I do on Mame :D

I don't understand how Flicky keeps making it onto compilations. I love the game but it was the opposite of popular.

I own everything I want off that list already but seeing some awesome games get re-released is cool. I'm glad they picked Shinobi III over Revenge for once.

I'm surprised we're seeing some Sega/Gremlin vector arcade games on the PS2 compilation too. I guess Star Trek didn't make it because of the license.

I've been playing these on my PSP for over a year now, but depending on how good the emulation is I'll pick it up, just because.

It'll be nice to have PS 2-4 working properly, not the crappy GBA collection. Nice collection of games if the price is right.

If everything is emulated well, this will be a great buy just for the Eccos and PS II-IV, there's WAY too much overlap with the Sonic collections though. That isn't too big a deal on the PSP version, where those collections aren't out, but it cuts into the value of the PS2 one. It's still a great way to play a ton of Genny classics on one disc, but they need to put the SoRs on these collections at some point. Bacon, you left Alex Kidd: The Enchanted Castle and Vectorman 2 off your list.

Wireless multiplayer for some of the games on the PSP collection could turn out really cool if done properly. I just hope they choose games where it can be used well, instead of just throwing it into random games just for the hell of it.

They shouldn't have included Sword of Vermillion. It wasn't that great back in the day and it's pretty damn lame today. Everything else on that list is at least still playable.

At $20 I'll pick up the PS2 version right away. Anything over that and I'll wait it out. I have been on an old school RPG kick as of late and I'd like to give PSIV another shot after all these years to see if it still holds up.

There's really only one "wtf were they thinking" game on that list (VF2). Plus I would have loved to have seen ESWAT in it's place.

Well, you could get the game and a Genesis for under $20. I'm a big fan of the game. I still have my import version from 1990.

I hear ya. I have over 30 systems in the closet at the moment. Only my PS2, GC and Xbox are currently hooked up. I take old systems out here and there to play but it's a pain the ass.

Alot people in this thread seem to have this crazy idea that Sega wants to do multiple emulators and make them work across different systems for packages like this, just to get a version that like 3% of people will know is better.

It would be noble, but it would make little business sense.

Sold. I'm not into the emu scene, so I'll be very happy to have all of these on a portable. I haven't played some of them, too, so many will be a fresh experience (PSII and III, Comix Zone, Ecco and Golden Axe games, Ristar). Hopefully the emulation is good this time. :( If this does well, and they're actually good quality ports, I'd love to see a second edition with Shining Force I & II, the Streets of Rage series, Beyond Oasis, and more Shinobi's and Sonic's.

Also worth noting, the PSP version will have wireless multiplayer for some of the titles. I dunno if it's infrastructure, but I'd doubt it.

Bumpo! I landed an interview with the compilation's producer for Sega-16, so toss me any questions you'd like to see answered. I'm already asking about Shining Force/Streets of Rage, so that's covered. ;)

What criteria was used to determine a game's inclusion on the compilation?
Did a fear of an M rating prevent some games (like Eternal Champions) from being included?
Were any games going to be included here, but held off for another compilation?

Good question. Honestly the only thing I use the GC for these days is the GameBoy Player, and that wont work on the Wii. :cry:
