Draw Something, Dammit

It's cute, finch. Definitely try stretching first, or at least tape the perimeter of the paper down. Also, watercolor is a very technical medium. More than other kinds of paint, I think it's important to get a book or find an online resource that goes through different techniques and practice them. Like when trying to get a large flat color, it helps to "paint" the area with just water and then drop the color in the pool with your brush. Your background looks more like you've done it with inks, which are harder than watercolors to get smooth transitions. It's charming how it is, but just letting you know in case you wanted to know.

Working on good paper is worth more than the price of the paper, especially if you are going to try to sell stuff. No one wants to buy a painting on thin, warped paper. Good paper is usually $7-$10 for single large sheets that you can cut up to make smaller stuff with, but all of those need to be taped down. Normal taping will reduce the warping but not eliminate it. The weight of the paper also helps, the thicker the paper the less warping. There are methods for taping the taper down while it is damp that will keep it from warping, but it is kind of a pain in the ass.

I know it is a bit more expensive (a bit over $2.00 a sheet at 12"x16"), but if you are going to do a lot of watercolor or ink work where you wet large portions of the paper, check out getting a block of arches cold pressed water color paper. All the sheets are glued together with a thick board supporting it all. Once your piece is finished you just pull the page off. Your paper will be flat and a new page is uncovered, ready for your next piece. The company has been making paper for over 500 years.

Man, get a nice long pointed brush that you will use for nothing but line work and practice. You will get the hang of it quick, and there is nothing like the thick/thin line variation you will get. Since you are used to the pressure sensitivity of the wacom stylus and the results you get with it, you will take to it like nobody's business. Do some straight up inking for practice, pick up a Pentel brush pen. Really portable and it has a nice REAL brush on it that gets huge line variation. (just don't watercolor over the ink, it is VERY water soluble).

Those Arches pads are pretty slick, but they are very pricey, so I have only seen other people use them.

Worth the money IMO, not having to do tons of prep is invaluable with as little time as I have to work on things.

Here is a work in progress, Monster mash all the way here. It is digital and still needs TONS of tweaking on pretty much everything, but I'm really happy with the texture I'm getting for the knobby, pockmarked Giant skin. I'm thinking about having a pitiful hero type hanging on to the lip ring for dear life to give it a good sense of scale. We'll see.

It is easily the best set of brushes for textures I've ever used, and they aren't so complex that PS starts bogging down while you are laying down strokes. I'd email it to you but even zipped the file is still over gmail's limit.

Gesso'ing a decent sized (old) canvas for a new painting right now.

I haven't drawn in ages but i feel like starting again. With some persuasion by a certain cowardly canine, I decided to post some older stuff that I drew. My camera sucks balls, so excuse the image quality.


I used to work with this woman! I used lead pencils and this awesome pencil which had a charcoal ink mix as its lead which lets you get really flat, deep blacks. The flash made the lead lines reflective which fucks up the image, but you get the idea. Usually you can't see them at all.

These are rather small. I'm using a Piccadilly notebook (3.5 x 5.5). I've never been too crazy about the paper in these, but they are (or were) much cheaper than the Moleskine brand. These types of books are just so easy to carry around. I've also got larger ones and other types of sketchbooks with better paper.

I use a few different pens and pencils. 2H, HB, H, F for leads. For pens, I have a set of Pilot Hi Tec-C pens in .4mm. I really like these pens a lot.

I alter the color a little with Photoshop, just a light sepia tone. I still prefer the look of the original, but my scanner never picks it up the way I see it on the paper.

I've been digging on having a Moleskine sketchbook in my back pocket lately, handy for all kinds of stuff. I bought one years ago that I'm only now getting around to filling up.

Some stuff from the last couple days!

Quickie painting and some sketches using a china marker (and some smaller one's using a plain-ol' pencil) on newsprint. Huge drawings! Spidey barely fit on the scanner.

Was messing around with India Ink for the lines on Mega Man there, it reallllly doesn't work well with acrylic.
The pigment doesn't set properly, and you can't put anything on top of the lines without 'em smearing. Possibly because the ink was old? Anyway --good to know!


edit: added three more drawings! Not sure what's going on with Venom's pose there, basically just started with the head and claw and sort of extrapolated from there. The alien/rhino thing was from a "pull two words out of a hat" drawing exercise I stumbled into while visiting the Art Institute this afternoon, and another Spidey because he's fun to draw!

Maybe Venom got hit in the balls? No? Pose doesn't quite work for that either but almost. Not sure where that was going!

Jeff: That's cool. I know the Moleskine books are more expensive, but I find the paper in them is thicker than most other SBs of that size. Really helps if you are trying different mediums out, such as ink and brush or dip pen.

Yeller: Yeah, it depends on the ink, but most ink is going to reactivate when you get it wet, like a watercolor. Personally I wouldn't mix ink and acrylic since the finishes are so different it will give a funny look to the piece, but if you do want to mix them, do your ink dead last so you don't get it wet again. (There are some acrylic based inks out there, but I haven't tried them out so I cannot comment on them.)

If you get some Golden brand liquid acrylic in black you can use it like india ink, it is very fluid while still putting down a solid opaque black. It may take two applications of the black to get it just right, but it won't mix afterwards.

Are you planning to do anything with the BG, or to go somewhere else with the idea? Like making a color piece like the zombie guy up there? Depending on your intent there are a lot of ways you could go with your shading, coloring and/or overall style. If you are going realistic or put a background, I'd at least do enough shading to connect her to the ground plane you put in. You should try taking that image in a couple directions! do one with realistic shading, one in color with a background, maybe one in black and white with comic style shading... approaching an image a couple ways and forcing yourself to do stuff that you might not normally think of.

I know I keep bringing this up but pick up either a sable brush and some india ink or a Pentel brush pen and try some old school comic style inking. It is such an expressive way to work and the sheer number of was to approach making marks with that means it is fantastic for developing a style that is all yours. It is a very direct graphic style to work in, and very easy to get your point across. Go to www.linesandcolor.com and the Drawn! blog and search for ink and related tags. You'll be amazed at the variety of stuff you can do with it.

I like the drawing BTW! It reminds me of an Odd Nerdrum piece, it has a similar pose, and the theme of a pleasing subject mixed with the grotesque is similar too. I LOOOOVE Nerdrum so that is some nice company to share. =)

Its a goal of mine to start adding backgrounds to the drawings i do, as its something I usually neglect, so I definitely will be doing that. I'm still not sure which way I'd like to go stylistically speaking, I enjoy realistically shading human figures but that head is so cartoony.

I think the people at linesandcolor.com need to pay their bills :fail:. That said, I'd love to try inking. Most of the drawings i do have really dark bold lines, ink would just push that over the top into fabulous land. I'm low on cash at the moment but I'll definitely look into it in the future.

Thank you, here's one more. Did this on the back of some junk mail I saved because I liked the paper stock. This was drawn very small. The top dome and center circle were traced from a quarter. Came out not even remotely close to what I imagined.

Okay so I'm working on a website concept for the same client I did the yeti for (and logo). Things are coming along nicely, and at the top there's a flash rotator for them to update with images. New contests, deals, announcements, etc. all go here. I thought a cool idea would be to have the yeti (now named Bootsie) riding a narwhal breaking through an ice wall with the tag line "Hey, lets break the ice!" next to it (and some underlining copy linking people to the about section to learn more about them).

I'm going to do more in the series later but right now I have the normal version and the ultimate 80's edition (take special note of the neon chain link fence in the background, it is my favorite.)

Dude, that in no way needs to be cleaned up at all. The colors look great, but the B&W version is rad all by itself! The image has to work in B&W first or color isn't going to do shit.

You really need to get some ink (i prefer yatsumoto sumi ink) and a brush. The messy style you did here would look great on a large sheet of paper! I'm not going to stop bugging you about this until I see some pictures of some ink pieces!

I'll be posting more new traditional stuff soon. After watching some tutorial videos I have realized that I've really had my head all wrong about using pen nibs for ink work. Ever since high school I have HATED working with a pen nib. This may have something to do with my teacher having no idea how to instruct us on what the worthwhile aspects of working with a nib were, and the fact the nibs supplied to us were old as shit and would have immediately bent if I were to have put any kind of serious pressure on it.

After seeing what you can really do with a nib I have taken it upon myself to become proficient with them. I feel like a fucking bonehead to have ignored one of the oldest and most important methods of applying my favorite medium. I am currently working on a surrealist girl who is half robot half bad psychedelic experience. I am going for serious visual overload on the detail and I'm doing it all with a dip nib! It has been really fun, and although I KNOW this thing will be a mess to look at from a distance, hopefully it will be rewarding viewed up close. I'm going to be out of visual motifs to use on this chick, keeping each little area fresh has been a real challenge. I'll post it up as soon as I'm done.

The thing with nibs is to never, EVER share them! HS art teachers are either retarded or hamstrung by tiny budgets. They adjust to the pressure your hand puts on 'em while you're breaking them in, and the second another human being draws with 'em, that's it game over man. I get a wild hair going every year that lasts about three weeks where I start inking stuff again, I totally feel the need to get serious with 'em.

I bought some Indian ink and a brush, any advice before i give it a go?

Make sure your paper is a little thick, otherwise you will have a lot of bleed on the ink. Also, if you are using an india ink make sure it doesn't dry in the brush, and always clean the brush well when putting your stuff away. Use soap or shampoo and the brush will last a LOT longer. (India ink has shellac in it which eats at the brush over time.)

Getting some col-erase blue or orange pencils are nice. It helps to ink over something a different color than what you are laying down, and that stuff can be erased really easily with a kneaded eraser. They are made by prismacolor.

Keep a blank sheet of paper next to what you are working on so you can dip and then do a test stroke to make sure you didn't over or under load your brush.

Putting your ink in a smaller container that you can see into can also help. It is better for your brush if you aren't accidentally dipping it up to the metal all the time.

Get some big paper and experiment with a big brush and use your whole arm to get some really expressive stuff. The look of a long flowing ink line losing it's ink and getting all scratchy at the end is amazing.

Let your brush start to run dry then drag it for a drybrush techinique, this can be really neat looking. You can get better results doing drybrush on paper with a little more tooth BTW.

Next time you are picking up art supplies grab a nib holder and nibs (speedball makes a pack with two holders and a variety of sketching nibs that is great for starting out.) The nib can give you great line variation like a brush but is still able to ink very fine details with more control than a brush. The brush and nibs can be used hand in hand, no reason to pick one or the other.

Ummm, I'll post more as I think of them.

Yeah to clean it use a bar of hand soap (newish) and press the brush into it and drag it, making little grooves in the soap. This is an easy way to get ink out of the base of the brush as long as you do it right after you finish using it.

I wouldn't worry about dipping the brush past the metal. I always did that (I don't see how you're realistically supposed to avoid this when inking with a small brush) and my brushes lasted just fine.

Oh and if you want really black ink, leave the bottle open for a day or so after you get it.

If you find that you aren't able to get clean enough lines out of it get a small 100% red sable brush.

I know she doesn't read well, but it was mainly an experiment in getting accustomed to using a dipping pen nib. She is probably about 95% nib, and the rest brush to get a bit more line variation. It is the first finished thing I've done with a nib, so I like it.

This goofy guy was a drybrush/wash experiment. Nib and brush on the character, with a wash for the background. Was kind of going for a post apocalyptic feel, like maybe he had never seen a rose before. The paper was a bit rough for the nib work so I abandoned it pretty quickly.

Both of those are really awesome! The super harsh ink lines really compliment all the detail and creepy stuff going on, and i think the lines do read well. I am a person who is in love with lines, you should believe me when i like lines. I would like to see a story involving those characters.

Umm, the chick is 8"x16", and I probably spent around 7-8 hours on it total. Slower than I normally work on stuff because I was playing with the dip nibs. Also I would stop and do my blue pencil lines for each section before I inked it. before I started on each limb or the trunk and head, I only had a vague blue body shape. I would do more detailed blue lines as I got to each part. Not exactly very efficient. =)

I dig the fishermen, the treasure trail on the big dude grosses me out. Good job. I really like the style you have for these illustrations.

More ink and crabs.

It is a crab drowning a guy. (I've had to explain that enough times that I know it isn't as obvious as it should be.) It started as a totally random drawing which got kinda out of control. I'm thinking about going in with photoshop and taking the guy out altogether. We'll see. It is ink & brush for the crab, guy and the black swirlies, and a pigma micron pen for the tiny bubbles and the linework on the ground.

Yes, much less lonely now! Thanks guys! Finch saw these the second (!) time he visited, but if anyone else is interested, I now have some posts with older work in them, with links to flickr sets with a good chunk of what I've done for the last 4-5 years.

I'll be getting some of my digital stuff up next, and expand the scans from my sketchbooks. Thanks for looking everyone.

I'm almost done on my first ink picture. I was a little intimidated by the brush so i used pens on most of it and just used the brush for the hair and background. I'm surprised at how much the brush feels like regular drawing, it was really interesting. My next one will probably be entirely done in ink and brush.

I accidentally flicked some ink drops across her face, and i accidentally breached the line of her beanie in a few places, but overall I'm pretty happy with it. The main thing I don't like is how shabby the shading lines on the cheek are. Still, its all a learning experience.

You should break up the white out for clean-up!

Cool drawing, I like the hatch marks.

Cool stuff arjue! I dig it sir. Get that brush out and see how much line variation you can get, start off making the thinnest line you can and slowly bear down more on the brush as you continue the line. Getting different weights is where it is at. And yeah, working with dipped ink, be prepared to have some smears and splats. Embrace it!

<3 that, arjue. the ink spots aren't very noticeable and the shading looks nice. You'll get better as you go, so keep going!
