Very nice! Is that watercolor you used for the colors there? Looks really natural, I like it a lot.
yeah, watercolors, gouache, ink and paint markers on paper. thanks man.
The colors are fantastic. I love how solid the red is compared to everything else. You should do full color pieces more often!

AND A STAR TREK PICTURE

Nice stuff Finch, can't wait to see what else you do with the ideas!
Finished drawing and inking the organic spiral, hand picture is for size reference. I want to color it but I have a feeling I would totally screw it up. Someday I'll get photoshop and give it a whirl.
Attachment 66088Attachment 66089
Just use Gimp! Or a copying machine to make a separate copy to test on. OR JUST DIVE IN. The worst you'll do is ruin it forever. It looks great b&w though.
http://www.gimp.org/ GNU Image Manipulation Program. It's pretty alright for being free. I colored http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y52...inch/left2.jpg in GIMP. with a mouse. on a dirty floor. Those were the days.
Sweet I'll check it out for sure, thanks Finch! Really like that picture by the way!
Yeah man, try out GIMP and if you think it is something you are going to dig, pick up a bamboo tablet to paint with. I almost wish I hadn't been using photoshop for 10 years by the time I first tried Gimp. It is a competent program, but by that time I was just too set in my ways with PS.
Also, if you feel OK with dropping a little cash for a more polished product, check out ArtRage. you can get a version of it for around $50 that is an amazing value for the money. It REALLY mimics traditional media really well. Better than Photoshop in some areas.
Awesome, thanks JM, I look forward to trying these things out!
Totally sick, I love the textures you created with shades and lines, that is fantastic.
Some recent drawings. These are some pretty bad photos instead of scans since they're all pretty big.
Nice Finch!
Fury, I really like the last one! The strong lines in the shading are great.
Great stuff Finch & Fury, simply awesome.
Doodle from work last night, it entertained me.

HOOT.
Oils? I'm not sure what's going on with the stars, is it mixed media?
It's all gouache and gel medium! I like the texture it makes.
As do I! I really like how peaceful and serene it feels.
I'mma go buy some cheap acrylic paints this weekend for a STAR TREK DS9 painting!
Wow!!! I love the way you use white to make stuff just POP off the canvas, it works so well. Great great stuff going on in both paintings dude.
They're both really nice, but i really like the variation of that red in the 2nd one.
i made some frog paintings.

working on a pin up for the comic reMIND, because that books is badass.
Looks great Hero, really nice job!
thanks!
(and now, with background!)
A really late assignment. I took some photo ref, but nothing is used directly. Tried all sorts of brushes to get some texture.
That is damn nice.
TNL artists, I am in need of some help/suggestions! I did a sketch at work yesterday of this idea I had (first pic) and I started drawing it for reals today. My problem lies in this big ol' foot. I like it, but I want to continue the kind or rocky pattern I started on the leg without making the foot look like a mess, basically keeping the detail that makes it look like a foot (because the other foot is going to be a mountain). I've mulled over it a little, but I would love to get some ideas from you guys to see how you'd tackle the problem. Thanks in advance!
Attachment 66323Attachment 66324
I like the foot as it is, in both pictures. I think it looks pretty good either way! The less rocky one is definitely easier to read as a foot though.
I believe the easiest way to handle that sort of that problem is to give a more defined line to the outer shape for emphasis. Basically you would have a thicker line around the outside of the character, the foot, the toes, and so on similar to an outline in order for the detail to not swallow up the nature of the object. It can also be used to emphasize things like which part of his twisted arm is currently in front of the other and which part of the hole in his chest is the front versus which is "inside" him, and helps separate foreground items from the background.
I like your thinkin' Mech, think I'm going to break out the tracing paper for this one so I can mess around with a couple things first.
Pineapple, I think Mech's suggestions are good, and I think it reads pretty well already. One thing I think works well is that the level of detail on a heavily-textured object should change with the form. Say, the bark of a tree, should either be more detailed along the edges of the form and simplified on the nearest surface, or vice versa. The same idea could be applied to the rocky shapes in your figural drawing.
It's my best friend, the same that I've discussed in other threads. I took hundreds of ref photos for future projects before she moved. She's uncommonly strong.
Thanks Fury, yeah the chest area for sure and the one arm are supposed to be like trees so I'm going to have to work on a bark style texture. I often fall back on very simple lines to try and convey bark on trees, but I'm thinking this guy who is supposed to be gigantic will need a stronger style.
Good stuff Pineapple. All the advice here is good, so I don't have much to add but maybe find some reference photos to see what kind of bark and rock textures you want to use. Doing smaller studies of that kind of thing before rushing into your final work can help a lot.
Fury: That is very nice. It is nice to see more painterly work in digital form. Usually we only get to see colored comic work from you.
Umm, here is a devil dog thing I inked last night. I scanned it and colored it in the photoshapps today at work. It is still early, but I like how it is coming together.

Love the colors JM, it feels like it's jumping off the screen! Also really nice textures on the muscles and whatnot. :tu:
Happy Friday the 13th! BerringerX won the what should I draw today question, if winning a question is possible.Attachment 66396
Started something strange, not sure where to go but I'll figure it out sometime.
Attachment 66407
Pineapple, I love your lion and bunny. Tho I would like the lion more without the woman, but I realize you were working in a tarot concept so I will say that I do like how you integrated her hair into his mane! The bunny I like because I have a bunny addiction, I'm starting a collection of beatrix potter's peter rabbit cross-stitches XD So basically, make more bunnies pls ;p
JM, you are drawing scary things lately. They're effing cool, though. I like the graphicy-ness of them.
I am loving your recent stuff JM! Those tentacles especially are really nice!
Here's today's sketch. Its every person I talk to on the phones at work, so it makes the day go by faster to draw them :)
Attachment 66549
And thanks Kyo, more bunnies being eaten by lions are on the way.

and an update to the awesome one!
That's cool Hero. If I might add one observation, the head of the shop guy in the background seems overly large. I agree with the oversized look of the girl's head since that kind of proportioning for cartoony kids is understandable. You just seem to have relatively normally proportioned adults in the other 5 adult characters in the piece. Something about that round head being wider than his shoulders looks off in comparison. Aside from that the composition is looking good. Keep us updated.
Pineapple, I dig that. You should do one every day!
I'm fine with it. That guy just has a big head.
i have been drawing James Buchanan as if he were in different series:

Those Pokomans
Hero, I love that market picture, so well done! And I didn't notice it at first, but now that JM mentioned the head size I can't unsee it, but its not a gamebreaker for me.
I need help again! I'm doing this picture for NGE and his lady and their newest addition, and I am STUCK. I need suggestions for the color of the mountains! I thought about purple mountain majesties, but it seems like it may be overwhelming. Black or grey seems like it would make it too dull. What do you guys think? Also not sure if I should leave Liam's name plain, one color, or a different color for each letter. This will be going in an infant's room, but they all grow up someday! I'd like to finish this up so I can mail it on Monday, this is about 6 hours from pencil to where it is now.
Attachment 66584
I don't know what color you should use for the mountains, but a rule of thumb is that the further things are in the background, the more faded they are due to atmospheric interference or whatever. In other words your foreground should always be more intense and darker than the background. I'm sure a light gray or blue-gray would be good. Just keep it lighter than the foreground. =)
Sounds good, thanks much for the advice!
What JM said!
Plus, I think the name should at least be just as vibrant/colorful as the rest of the foreground stuff. Maybe a color that isn't used yet too, so it jumps out more? I would make each letter the same color though. My 2 cents!
More update nonsense!
First one is a quick 10 minute sketch from a few nights ago, looks more like Akuma is surfing than doing a Super Art lol. Second is from last night, spent a little more time on it.
Attachment 66616Attachment 66617
I like the first one the best, but the detail on that sword on the 2nd is really neat!
i have been drawing pictures of real people.

Also My Little Buchanan: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8...fuq9o1_500.jpg
Finch should do another Etrian painting and put it on etsy so that I can buy it and I won't ask for a discount even though one time one thing was said about a birthday gift that never came and I won't even mention astronautic giraffes or anything. I just want moar Etrian.
i think there are a few big paintings that i need to work on right now, including that secret birthday one that i seriously will get to eventually.
Great stuff Finch! The boxers are my favorite, but they're all very nice!
Watched that crappy AvP Requiem last night, and I loved the idea of a Predalien, and this is what came out while I was at work. I didn't even finish the movie, and there weren't a whole lot of close ups of the guy when I was paying attention, but this is how I'd draw him. It's starting to get interesting trying to keep the detail while makin' him all dark. Had a nice little drop of spittle land on the picture while I was chewing gum, right on his damn mouth, while I was attempting to add a "shiny, wet" look. GRRR.

Hey, remember that cat-bot business I was working on? It's up for vote here:
http://www.remindblog.com/2012/08/12...remind-pin-up/
If it's one of the top three, it gets printed into the book! #19 is mine - vote away :D
Ok, I voted hero. You gotta return the favor when I put a couple designs up for a shirt contest. =]
Character designs (commission)
Hero, great sketches, they're coming along very well!
JM wow, just awesome stuff! Reminds me of Thane from ME2 a little bit.
I could use some suggestions again. Nearly done putting ink on this guy, problem lies in the ribcage. The space between the ribs should be like a thin layer of "skin", and i'd like to make it look as such, but I feel like doing it a straight black like everything else would not look right, also I think cross stitching would look out of place? Basically asking what would any of you guys do in the situation?
Attachment 66671
Depends on how translucent it is - if it's enough to see through but not completely transparent, some crosshatching in the spots where the ribs on the other side would be seen should show that.
Think or it this way - when you hold a window up to light, you see right through it. When you hold a balloon up to light, if you place something close enough behind it, you can make out a ghost of its shape as you look through the balloon. If the skin is supposed to be like that, then the crosshatching in key spots should hint at that.
The sketches (shown earlier) turned into this - I'm really happy with how it turned out, client is super happy too!
There's a finch drawing on my visitor page that I think is quite nifty.
Looks good Hero, nice job!
Today's theme at work is sarcastic animals.
Attachment 66694
Omg if I was a bunny, that would be my face exactly ; p
You're a penis, pineapple -burns all your pictures-
I didn't think I'd get to use them so quickly, thanks!
Hey, did you guys know this a game on your phone, now?
i made a birthday picture for rama and i like how it came out.

Attachment 66732
I like the expression on Space Giraffe's face.
I was trying to think of other things to fill in some space and I thought of you so I made a space giraffe! He looks silly right now, I tried to make it so his snout was bent up against his helmet.
Well maybe this is the weekend that Lion Bean visits the space giraffe and his Alpaca followers.
:tu: do it.
Detail update! Finch I appolgize for caliing mine a space giraffe, that is your copyright as far as I'm concerned. This is just a giraffe IN SPACE.
Attachment 66745
I think SSJN is the original creator of Space Giraffe. Jeff Minter actually stole the idea from him.
Also, the giraffe actually made me laugh.
http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m9...9o1_r1_500.jpg
i think i drew her too kawaii. the original she doesn't want to talk to her skull friend who's discussing whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them: to die. to sleep.
But in my version she's like "Oh, skull-aniki, i'mma take arms against a sea of troubles, cuz that's how bandage girls roll."
moe moe bandage girl
i made this for my cousin in tokyo. He asked for it more a little more than a year ago, so this one's breaking all speed records. I think 2 years was the previous record. Let's see if i can cut it down to 9 months, like a regular baby.

i think i'm getting better at ze watuhcolors! One of these days i'll figure them out.
CATS EVERYWHERE IN MONSTER HUNTER
(another commission, WIP)
Thanks roommate! I actually had some other layouts for this that were all bad.
I think i'm going to switch to light boxing and watercolor paper to avoid pencils dulling up the colors and stray ink lines, but i really like the way illustration board absorbs the colors and inks...
