Draw Something, Dammit

Ok, here's what I've been up to. Just finished up 5 pages for the Bartkira project. It is a mashup that replaces all the characters in the Akira manga with simpsons characters. Around 300 artists are taking part, each remaking 5 pages of the GIGANTIC six volume manga. I got pg. 16-20 of Vol. 6, I'm pretty glad I got to draw Millhouse/Tetsuo and The Colonel/Skinner.

They aren't great, but they are the first finished comic pages I've ever made, so I'm proud regardless.

So, I've been getting ready for a show at a local coffee shop. Big whoop, but whatever. It is gonna be fun.
Since I got a slot in October, I decided to do an all spooky show with my weird heads I doodle all the time.

I'm going to have around 40 or so of these smaller pieces. They are all going to be priced between $35 and $60, depending on the complexity. I also just finished a linocut that I'll be hand printing up 6" x 8" limited prints for the show. These will probably be $10. I'll also have full size pieces at my normal prices, I hope I sell some stuff.

I see at least three of those that I would buy prints of. Good stuff.

First image is a self portrait of me commuting to work. I just got Aseprite and didn't know what to draw, so I figured I'd try drawing a sprite of myself.

Second is a fighting game character. She's is a teen slut whose gimmick / special moves are that she regurgitates shit, so she won't always have legs dangling out of her mouth. I'm not sure whether I should dither the shading as its a very time consuming process, and I kinda like how cartoony it looks, but the rings of shading on her belly are bothering me a little. Maybe it just needs another highlight layer. I desperately need to learn how to draw shoes. There will be a small dog on the end of that leash as soon as I figure out how to draw it!

Does anyone know of any good animation technique / advice websites? I did a basic run animation of the self portrait, and i really liked the combination of not being able to draw very well contrasted with smooth animation. After hours of work though, I found out the hard way that Aseprite has only has 1 level of undo with layers (infinite with everything else though!), and I completely fucked it beyond being salvageable :(

I liked it a lot when you posted the sketchy lineart version on tumblr. It kinda lost something in the clean-up.

Aw, thanks! I felt like there was a lot wrong with the sketch, but I guess the lines/gesture/something made it more lively?

Isn't that always kind of the case? Cleanup is tough!

Pretty happy with how this went, considering that I feel much less skilled in digital painting than vector, and am still wrapping my head around creating limited palettes in PhotoShop.

Second test page with the new digital pen. First page was a bunch of squiggly lines and some coloring so nothing really worth showing. Spent about an hour on this last night. I am REALLY liking the way this thing feels. Will take a lot more practice and learning to get good with it, but I am enjoying how smooth and responsive the tablet is.

Sorry, I have been out of circulation for a while. The show was fun. Sold some stuff and had a good time. I still have a ton of work left over from the show, I really need to get some kind of store going where I can put that stuff up for sale. It is all just sitting in a portfolio at home.

I can guarantee you at least one sale.

I got a new tablet and sketched this during a meeting. I should have got one of these a long time ago. I was inspired by YD's tablet on an arm, but eventually went with a Cintiq 22hd and an Ergotron LX arm (despite copious amounts of comparison with the competitors).

The arm seems obvious but it has made a huge difference in how I interact with the tablet. Most the time I work standing up. I wouldn't bother with a cintiq (or clone) without one.

The Ergotron's pretty fantastic. It changes your posture from "bullshit" to "whatever's comfortable".

I've had an Intuos for years and have always been too afraid to really try and use it. Here's a first attempt (unfinshed) from a guy that forgot why he's doing right-brained work to this day.

So I'm gonna scan a bunch of these slips I never returned for the next couple weeks. Maybe I'll finish them by the end of it and not be a total deadbeat.

What was this for? Is this like a bunch of unique, "artist cards" in a trading card set?

Fangamer packs them in with people's orders. They've got this thing called "Swag for Slips" where you can request to do some and they'll give you store credit.

It's a cool idea on the surface, but the payout's only like $15 per 100 slips, which I quickly realized is dick-all for the time I was spending on them. Considering FG's prices, I'd have ended up with one t-shirt to show for like a full-time week worth of work. Granted, I definitely got way too fancy with 'em.
