Draw Something, Dammit

I think it will go like this: on Friday or Saturday night, I'll post up a screen capture from a movie or something, and everybody who wants to play will draw up an interpretation of the image, and we'll critique from there, posting up revisions until finally we get a bunch of kickass drawings up.

Something like that.

We'll do a parallel thread in Sound Off with voting once the "finals" are in (the Sunday after, maybe?), and do this every other week.

I really hope one day I get to work somewhere that they have regular drawing classes or have models come in after work and such.

We used to get a bunch of people from the studio back in Atlanta and crash Westwood College's lifedrawing sessions. They were run by a director from Cartoon Network.

I'm just glad I didn't post my story of him being torn between his calling to land and sea. He doesn't quite fit in to either world, and finds a home amongst other half animals he meets along his journey who are going through the same thing. A story of belonging and betrayal.

Do you usually draw on a yellow background?

Depends. I get tired of drawing on white all the time, so I tend to tint it one color or another. Less eye strain late at night, plus it makes coloring tricky areas a little easier (the color shows through instead of your preferred fill color, making it very obvious where things are getting pinched).

Picked up on this like "Day 2" working in Flash professionally.

Mind you, I usually flip it back over to white when the drawing's finished, when I'm not feeling lazy. :lol:

I animated a flash eCard today. It's not very good. But I only had 5 hours to do it and no formal animation experience.

Having fun drawing different things lately. Background to come on this one, thinking about a complicated starfield and a nice soft glow.

Man, I dig that too! You know I'm a sucker for old illustration styles. Good job on making it look hand inked. I assume you are using a tablet for these pieces, correct? I got to try out a friend's tablet, (I forget the brand but it cost him over a grand) and it was super nice. I was amazed at how well my strokes translated. With tools like that I can see how people go full digital.

Here are a couple of pages from a project I just started to try and figure out balancing black and white images,which I suck at. Originally I was going to use it to practice painting so I included the ones I finished before switching gears. I bought a new set of paints and illustration boards for it a few months ago too, so I'm going to need to find something else to use them for =\

Drew, did you use a younger, more soulful Wilford Brimley as your model for the mechanic? I like it. Nice to see you branching out a bit here, the Luchador stuff you did a while back was nice, but that subject is a bit saturated in pop culture lately. Unique stuff like this that only you would make is the direction you should be going.



I noticed some of you other artsy types putting up your handmade xmas gifts, so I thought I'd join in.

Here is a quick portrait of my girlfriend's daughter I did tonight. I worked from a photo, it is on paper with gray acrylic paint to tone the paper and give it a bit more texture. I used Charcoal, Graphite, and White Prismacolor pencil. I may do a touch up or two, but it is finished for the most part.

This is a surprise gift, I hope she digs it.

Yeah. The sky is too bright when I convert it to RGB. You can see more sky-line in the original. Oh well.

That perspective is so great. I try to keep shit simple and hide my lack of skills wherever possible. I love the b&w thing going on, too. Definitely much more moody and authentic feeling.

I agree. The cartoon characters often look kind of rough but the simple style used for the ones going up the mountain works really well.

I'm getting it printed at 20x30 and framed in a gawdy golden frame with leaves carved in to it. Will be awesome. Will hang in studio. Will polish. I was originally going to give it as a gift but opted to go with something else for this person. So now I'll just keep it for myself, I guess. I like it enough to frame it so it will be good. The luchador posters I did look good on my wall and this kind of goes well with that quirky and fun illustration theme.
