I think it's going to be explained as some other mutant morphs his body into his original or something silly like that.
Anyway, I'll consider the Wolverine Origins video game canon over the movie then X-Men, X2, X3, then The Wolverine.

Did the video game have a different story from the movie?
You get to fight giant rock monsters and Sentinels. And hack people's arms and heads off!
I never played the Origins game, but X2: Wolverine's Revenge kicked shitloads of ass. Mark Hamill did Logan's voice if I recall correctly, and it was awesome.
Origins is great because you can see the damage Wolvie takes. I sat him in front of a rocket launcher until all his frontal upper body was just adamantium, then moved away and watched hin regenerate. And again, you can hack mofos to pieces. There's a move where you chop both of a dudes' arms off in one fell swoop.
I may have to check this out. Is the game itself any good?
I remember it being a little repetitive, but I stuck with it.
Sure, it's IGN, but he does make it sound like some good fun. I might have to look for a cheap copy.
I still own my copy. It's so damn good.
I first played the demo and when I got to the point where I had to grab the helicopter pilot then yank him out the window and hold his head up to the Copter blades. I was sold.
Oh and slamming guys into poles and booby trap spikes are awesome too.
