Doug Stanhope to run for president in 2008

So Doug Stanhope, failed host of the Man Show, occasional shill to Girls Gone Wild, and one of the best comedians working today is tossing his hat into the political ring. He says that this isn't a bit, and he wants to raise as much hell as possible in the next two and a half years. I'd almost vote for the guy. Check out his stance on the real issues:

Drugs

He's no Bill Hicks, but he doesn't completely suck either.
I'm sure if I were half tanked in a bar, with my friends, listening to his act, I'd enjoy it.

I listen to a lot of comedy on my XM in the car, and Stanhope is pretty frequently played. Judging by his comedy, he's among the most awful people the world has to offer.

Though stirring up shit with the supremely-awful political system is never a bad thing.

He's trolling real life. I approve.

Jim Norton was on Jay Leno, he was so awful. Completely bombed.

Clearly that is not a venue for him. It makes you wonder why guys do stuff like that.

Norton was on Leno like 4 times this year, and the audience loved him every time I've seen him (like 2 or 3 of those times). If they didn't I don't know why they'd keep having him back.

But what the fuck does that have to do with anything?

Comedians seem to do things they're not really good for. I guess to get exposure, which makes sense, but if it makes you look shitty, I don't see the point.

I thought he bombed at least, or maybe he just kind of sucks. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I don't know that I personally loved his Leno appearences, but I can recognize when he's going over well with the audience, and he was definately going over well. He's been great every time I've seen him live though. Not for everyone, though. I generally reccomend him to Dave Attel fans. If you can dig Attel, I say check out some Norton.

Stanhope I reccomend more to Bill Hicks fans. Very, very different style.

Every time I've seen Norton on Leno the crowd loved him (his last appearence took him some time to get going, but he was killing for the rest of it, especially the sit down part).

Leno really likes him.

Your mom is flat out unfunny. Doug is hilarious. His act isn't a bunch of rapid-succession punchlines, and it take a while to get to the payoff sometimes, but I tend to enjoy comics that can pull that off. And your assessment that he's gunning for shock humor is flat-out wrong. Doug believes what he's saying on stage.

By the way, for those of us that do enjoy this type of humor, Doug, Sean Rouse, Andy Adrist, and some chick I've never heard of are putting out small run of a CD under Stanhopes "Unbookables" project (designed to highlight comedians to dark or controversial to get a lot of work). http://www.morbidobscenity.com/

Believe it or not. They should try and get booked at "The Borgata" in AC, NJ. They'd probably sell out.

And yeah I like the "thinking man" humor. I like Louis Black. I see Louis as more of the thinking man. Unlike his Daily Show routine. His Standup is a mixture of rapid fire and thinking mans humor. I remember going to one of his shows. My friends and I were in the front row, and he started on us cause we were the only ones laughing. Where he was performing noone understood his jokes; Except us. Add to the fact this was before his Comedy Central stand up airings and his routine on the Daily Show.

But I do enjoy the rapid succession type .. like Dom Irera.

I believe he was drunk, if not drunk. Definitly tipsy. If you view more of the videos of Stanhope on Youtube, he'll mention the bars located in the back. Handing free booze to him before his act.

Yeah, it should be mentioned that Stanhope doesn't do gigs within 100 miles of New York City. He has a dislike of the place bordering on phobia. He generally won't even play Philly because he's afraid new yorkers will drive down, though he's doing a rare gig there this fall. Rouse and Andrist likewise almost never come out here.

He is pretty much always drunk. But speaking as if your making shit up as you go along is the oldest trick in the stand-up book. He's deliberately hesitating and such for comic effect.

I still think Hulk Hogan should run for President.
