External Hard Drive Reccomendations, poor fay vore

I'm looking for a decent little external hard drive on which to pop my MAME and StepMania shit, amongst other things. Being that this is to be used mainly on my Powerbook, I really want to get something that can do FireWire and USB 2.0 to take advantage of FW's speed and also have USB for the 90% of computers without FW. Honestly, though, I'm not even sure it's worth the extra price of admission. Anyone have experience with data transfer on both that could give some insight?

Anyways, these are the ones at which I was looking. Are these brands trustworthy?

Get an internal hard drive (only Seagate or Western Digital) and a hard drive enclosure to make it an external drive.

Don't know the brand and the price is OK, but the truth is already there.

Yup, was going to say the same thing myself. It's cheaper to just get a good external drive enclosure and then just a standard internal drive to put into it. It doesn't cost that much for a Firewire-based enclosure, and that way, if you ever want to upgrade to a bigger drive, it's simple and easy.

I have one, and other than the fact that it's a cheap CompUSA enclosure that is of questionable quality, overall it works just fine. I think you do get the benefit of specific UBS2 or FireWire external drives being able to power themselves without an additional power cord, but if that isn't a big deal, then just go the enclosure route.

Alright, I think I can get a decent enclosure for a 3.5" drive for around $50-70.
The only way this would be monaterally beneficial would be to use one of these OEM drives here.

I'm going to throw my vote behind standard HD + enclosure.
I bought a cheapass USB2.0 enclosure ($35) and I've had no problems with it whatsoever. Going that route will get you an external drive for less than half the price of a prebuilt unit.

Are these enclosures or just externals?

The ministack you can buy just the enclosure or get a drive with it. Check the link I posted.
