JRPG fanboys are going to need to handle this one in gloves.

Watch the move on the front page. The stylus controls all ball movement while the D-Pad makes one move. This is actually starting to look like a lot of fun. When's the last time Square made something the least bit sporty? Chocobo Racing? Rad Racer?

You might have a point if this were trying to be a remotely realistic simulation of the sport, but it isn't so you don't.

That said, I can't bring myself to care about this. I've yet to see a game based on basketball that I enjoy, arcadey or sim-oriented.
