Correct, we are talking about the 1950s and 1960s and up through the 1980s, when there were lots of good union jobs so even chaps without degrees could make a solid living for their family. Now you are shackled to a cash register.

I was thinking about that today, the concept of the service economy that is. I think fundamentally it is just a pipe dream where we make some other country our poor class (with the magical assumption that everyone here will find a service job or better.)

I don't think people should be allowed to get married before 24 anymore. It just doesn't work anymore. At least live with the person togother without outside support for three years before rushing into anything.

My cousin wants to marry the dumbass who unfortunately fathered her daughter. She made one mistake (she's a damn smart girl most of the time) and she's in school and everything, but dammit, we had all hoped she'd learned her lesson. This guy could barely get his GED and he's in the Army Reserve or something. I hope she doesn't throw her life away on that asshole so young.

Well the problem is that service jobs put you firmly into the poor class.

This is true. What was a factory job in the 80s? $10 an hour? What is a service job now? like 6.50?

I'm not sure, but off the top of my head I think that factory/blue collar work pays about twice what service jobs do.

I pay $650cdn a month for a one bedroom apartment in Toronto, and I was paying $425cdn a month for a bachelor in Hamilton, which is a city of about half a million people.
Is rent in the south really that high?

Depends where in Florida. I assume she was in a major city. Ill find out and get back to you.

I know around here (Morris County, NJ) it is $700 for a one bedroom, easy.

Service jobs are under $10, while factory jobs were well over $10. A union job was $30+.

Really depends on where you are (as a very general rule, jobs in the south pay less), but yeah, that's about right.

I'm feeling the sting of a lot of this, too, doing the whole 'old man in school' thing. I don't regret one bit not going college until I was 25 (not that it was really a possibility before), because I know I would've gotten swept up in all the distractions and failed out. What I do wish I'd done different was not pissed away those years working nickel and dime foodservice jobs, etc, that have given me exactly zero in terms of marketable skills. And when I finish school, I'll be competeing with people nearly 10 years younger for the same jobs, or people my age with a few years experience under their belts.

SOMEONE gets that money. Before it was the guy with a kid and a house. Now its going to the executive who is using it to buy a new yacht and vacation home.

I'd rather the first guy get it.

And like I said in the other thread, we owe the weekend to unions - they fight for all of us, in the end.
