I don't think unions do that much good for non-union workers anymore though.
There isn't much incentive for them to lobby for better labor laws and workers rights when those things are completely redundant for their members.
Personally, I'd like to see them go after employment agencies and temp services for all the harm they're doing to both the job market and those who work for them.
I don't know if this is a problem in the u.s., but where I live, a lot of people are getting screwed over by these agencies. Not only do they take an extortionate cut of the worker's wage, they also make sure that they have a high enough turn around so that nobody who works through them ever makes it past the probationary period so nobody ever gets a permanent position through them, even though that's the only reason why people agree to work through them in the first place.
Their client companies must be profiting by this scheme somehow too, since it's been going on for so many years. I suspect they put up with the high turnover of workers for the very reason that it exempts them from any benefits and union membership.
