What is Monitor Refresh Rate?

I noticed my PC LCD monitor is capable of refreshing at 60, 70, 72 and 75Hz. what does it mean? is higher better? i toyed around with all the settings and didn't see a difference. Does refresh rate anything to do with monitor response time?

Also, im looking into buying a 24" widescreen Dell LCD monitor. The screen has a response time of 12ms....is that good enough for gaming? i know there is better response times, but those are usually in smaller monitors.

and last, does does it mean when the response is measures in grey to grey....or some crap like that? which one should i look out for?

Higher is better, but you won't notice it as much on an LCD.
It's simply how many times the screen updates each second.
For CRTs, it actually makes a huge difference, since higher refresh rates reduce flicker and produce a more vibrant image.

The only reason to keep it on 60Hz is if you are into emulation and want to make certain games look more faithful to the real thing. Many older games use a 60Hz flicker for special effects, like transparency (e.g. shadows in KOF).

If you aren't emulating anything like that, or if you just don'e care if some graphical effects look a bit odd, then go for the highest refresh rate available.

Generally speaking, 15ms is the cutoff for LCDs if you're going to be playing a lot of games. But everything is basically 8ms now, so even if you wanted a 15ms, you couldn't find one. 8ms is gooood.

For some LCDs, setting your PC to refresh at anything other than 60hz can kinda fuck up your LCD's picture. Then you have to go back into safe mode and change everything back. Had that happen a few times.

Grey to grey is just another measurement of the refresh rate, I believe, only it's a lot easier to measure a lower refresh rate because no colors are involved. I've seen LCDs advertise 2ms grey to grey. I'm not totally sure on that one, though.

thanks man. the Dell 24" LCD i want is 12ms, not a bad response rate considering the size of the screen....specially that my current LCD(which is old) has a response rate of 24ms.
