Having just bought my third import PS2, I am looking for some recommendations as to what games to get. It's been years since I've played JPS2 games. I had one at launch and another pretty shortly thereafter.
The SNK stuff I am well aware of, with KoFXI at the top of my list. What else should I keep an eye out for? If you could mention the language barrier, that would be helpful too.

Venus & Braves (Greatest Hits) - Heavy J req for story, gameplay is intuitive and challenging (requires more math than katakana).
Summon Night: EX Thesis - Isometric-view 2D action-RPG, requires some katakana. Walkthrough available.
Rez + Trancevibrator - Entertainment for the married couple.
Sakura Taisen 1/3/5 - Translations and/or guides are available for the adventure parts, and battles are intuitive yet easy.
Little Princess (PS1)/Tenshi no Present (PS2) - I wouldn't recommend these unless you'd seriously want to see what NIS hasn't localized in the US. No guides available, heavy J req, easy to get lost.
Yoshi doesn't like Rez. But he might like the vibrator :D
If you like shooters, Ibara is bullet hell heaven.
I like those Beatmania games, but only if you like Beatmania.
In before Tain, that Earth Defence Force game everyone and their mother is raving about.
Stay away from Ibara, you're too old =P

Melty Blood is coming out too next month which looks really cool if you like fighters.

Yeah, the PSP version is supposedly a different game all together, but you'll be able to trade home made levels between all the different versions. I don't have a PSP though, so I haven't really looked into any info on it. If you really don't mind waiting, Aquire have just started on the PS3 incarnation of the series, but I wouldn't expect that until late 2007 at the earliest.Quote:

Well, the new Choaniki game is horizontal, but it sucks. You could get PS1 games though, there's a ton of good horzies there
Huh... so many recommendations for Ibara. So TNL thinks it's better than Espgaluda? (I've not played either...)
Simple 2000 Vol. 81: The Chikyuu Boueigun 2 (Earth Defense Force 2) is amusing, and creepy. Basically a third person shooter with huge environments, interactive environments, and a flood of enemies that swarm you. I personally love the feeling of firing a few rocket launchers at buildings and watching them blow up and crumble.
Other than that, there's a ton of those Bemani games released from IIDX to Drummania to Para Para Paradise.

Personally I like Espgaluda a lot more than Ibara, but then again I just do not get (or like) Raizing-style shooters at all. The whole rank concept pisses me off, if nothing else. I think people are just suggesting it because it is the newest.Quote:

The PS2 version of Macross is the only good 3D one ever made. Sega's AM2 designed it.
Photo Boy 1 (PSone) and 2 (PS2) are fun takes on the platformer formula. While dodging crap your goal is to get good shots of stuff happening in the background.
The Taito Memories games are getting a budget rerelease soon, each collection had about 20 Taito arcade titles on them.

So overrated (own Oneechanbara 2). It's just a poor man's DMC. Controls are hokey, moves are very limited and it get's dull. If you must get it the newest version is Simple 2000 Vol. 101 The Oneechanpon, which is an upgrade to Oneechanbara 2.Quote:

Sega Ages: SDI & Quartet is on my list of JPS2 games to get eventually. It includes straight ports of both the arcade and MarkIII versions of each. It's a small number of games for a compilation but both versions of Quartet(which are two different games) are classics.
Ah, yeah, forgot to mention the Ages games. Figured Yoshi might like the closest VF2 port available or something.
