Buying Power suplies

I'm about to order a power suply for a computer I'm building for my little sister who is about to start college.

What exactly do I need to know when choosing one?

So far I know you need to make sure that the main board power plug is the right size. What else?

The power suply that died that I will be replace has these stats

OutPut 200W

-5volts at .15A
+12volts at 6.5A
-12Volts at .15 A
+5Volts at 1.7A
+5 Volts at 20A
+3.3Volts at 18 A
+3.3Volts at 2 A

About the only thing different with the PS I'm looking at is the amps that go with those values and the over all watt output. Do those two values really matter that much?

The best I can figure is that No, amps do not matter as the entire internet doesn't care about it.

Modern power supplies are pretty much universal. There are 20 and 24 ping connectors, and an extra 4 pin connector on all modern motherboards. Some older PSUs had permanent 24 pin connectors, so you couldn't use them with 20 pin motherboards.

Uh, yeah....that one you ordered should work fine. Anything from Newegg that fits the bill and has a few good reviews so you know it isn't going to blow up.

My only suggestion is that you determine what kind of power supply it is. My HP computer uses an ATX (200W) power supply and I replaced it with a 300W model that was also ATX. They both have the same power interfaces for the motherboard and Hard Drives.

Newer computers that use SATA hard drices require a different power interface. I'm not a computer expert by any means, but that's about as much as I know on the subject.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. We have like ten junkers laying around, so I figured out really fast that the old 20 pin ATX wasn't going to work with the newer boards.

The only thing I was worried about was the amp raitings because they seem to change a lot between brands. Some electronics need everything to be just right to work and thought maybe PC parts were like that too.

BUT becuase the 30 something sites I GOOGLED didn't say shit about amp ratings on the voltages, I'm going to assume it doesn't matter.

the PS came today.

The motherboard is some gay ass proprietary bullshit. It needs a special 5 year old compaq made PS. Fuck you Compaq.

(yes, it really is proprietary. I took out a voltmeter and the thing is so fucked up it doesn't even have a standard PC on set up.)
