How much to charge...

...to do a media kit? The internship that cowdisease hooked me up with wants to hire me as a freelancer. During my duration at the internship, I did multiple things besides graphic design. I had to build a prototype magazine rack, put together a book proposal (for creative director - not finished), amongst other things. I started their 2007 media kit and i didnt finish by the time my 8 weeks was up. So they want to pay me to finish it up. I have no idea what to charge or how much it usually charges. I couldnt find any pricing on GOOGLE, as I would either think businesses hired a company to do it or it was done in-house. Any suggestions? I'm having a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) after I get out from MAD Magazine to discuss price. I have Graphic Designers Guide Book (forgot name but its thick and is like a guideline) but I thought it would have something like that.

Why are there so many of us in or going into this damn field here?

Because you want to see your salaries spiral downward as everyone who couldn't hack it in a real major decides to play with corporate finger paints?

Whoa, you work for MAD Magazine?

Figure out about how long it will take you to do a media kit (in hours). Determine a reasonable hourly rate for yourself. Multiply the 2 numbers together, double it and that will be how much you should charge.

If you know the client is a PITA, then triple the product.

Technically yes. But not paid. I'm interning but I'm laying out some pieces for the magazine.

Well I really dont know how long it will take me so I cant really do an hourly rate.

I dont think they are PITA whatever that is. Its just a small scale magazine that needs a media kit put together to give out to potential clients.

Do you know the scope of this media kit (exactly what is included)? You have to estimate SOMETHING in order to charge a reasonable fee. Otherwise, you are just shooting in the dark and you may spend way too much time on the project and ended up getting paid like $2/hour (which happened to my friend who did a website for a sports equipment store, he charged 2k for the website but the store has like 600 pictures, each individually taken/cropped/cut/etc)

I already put the media kit together when I was doing internship for them. now that I no longer work for them for free, he's hiring me as freelance. All the info was provided as it was taken from last years media kit. I just have to revamp the look and edit the years to 2007.

I'm probably going to have to finish the book proposal as well. but that is more work.

Simple. I do this shit all the time. It's called "corporate espionage", for lack of a better term. Pose as a potential client and just price out your project with another firm or freelancer, then charge accordingly. Make sure you don't call from your home, office, or cell phone, for obvious reasons.

For instance, my facility is considering getting into doing closed captioning, because these fuckers make money hand over fist for a ridiculously miniscule amount of work. I called posing as a production assistant, played dumb as to the specifics of the work so that I didn't give myself away, and was able to get ballpark figures from several different facilities.

EDIT: Warning, doing this may make you feel like a dick, because yes, you are wasting nice peoples time. But if you undercharge for the work you do, you are just wasting your time anyway, so it's either them or you. I've wasted hours of people's time doing this shit, but I can justify it in the end as the most expediant method for getting going rates for services.

I know. I've decided that Stenography/closed captioning/transcription is what I want to do for that very reason. For now anyway. Going to train for a cert, but to be viable as a court reporter I have to do 250 words per minute. Dayum.

This job would give me plenty of time to write on my own. Awesome.
