I got to try and get to see this in the next few days. For those that IMAXed it, how was the 3D at the end?
It's been getting some great reviews, I can't wait to see it. This book the 2nd time through was a lot better for me, it seemed to make more sense for some reason. It's been said before but the movies (since 3 really) are different stories from the book. They're Harry Potter whittled down to it's simplest story lines.
As the books grow more complex the movies become more disjointed and rushed. I feel they did a good job with the material, since the book was so damn long I knew that a ton of shit had to be cut, and the film is a much more streamlined version of the book, but it still felt like there should have been an extra hour so certain things could have been fleshed out more. Just about every plot point in the movie was fleshed out a lot more in the book, and certain parts of the movie suffer because a lot of the cool things in the book are just glossed over and rushed through instead of being explored. This is basically the problem I had with the goblet of fire movie, but to larger degree.
Oh well, I knew this would happen going into the movie, but it still bothers me anyway. I felt that alot of the actors were wasted, the were just there and they didn't really do much. I think they nailed Umbridge though, she was perfect. I also really got a kick out of seeing Filch have his time in the spotlight. And I also LOVED the stuff they did with the daily prophet, how the camera would zoom in and out of the articles.
Also, I don't like the way this new guy plays Dumbledore. In the books Dumbledore is always kind, nothing ever bothers him, and whenever someone yells at him or is rude to him he just smiles and calmly says something awesome. But in the movies dumbledore seems impatient and angry at times which is way out of charcter for him.
I want a six hour long, lord of the rings style director's cut dvd.
: how the hell did harry know how to use levicorpus in this movie, if he learns how to do it from the half blood prince? And no, that memory he saw doesn't count.

I agree with Cowutopia, the movies are generally weak visual representations of the books; more like an addendum to them than stand-alone works. If I had watched the second movie without having read the books (and they're very easy reading, you can plow through it in one day if you have the time) I wouldn't have known what the fuck was going on.
On the other hand, watching super fucking long movies like LOTR makes me want to die. I wouldn't want them to do that. This is fine, but if you care at all for the story just read the books.
For the Imax questioners, it was my first time seeing a 3D movie at the Imax, and it was pretty underwhelming. There wasn't really any benefit to watching it like that, and it distracted me a bit because from my seat's angle I could still see double images around the characters. But I'm glad I went, just so I can say I did.
Seeing it tomorrow. So far we enjoyed all of HP films, sans Prisoner. Looking forward this one too.
Lucky for me, my gf reads all the books. Anything I don't understand, I have her there sitting next to me to fill me in.
Like the scene where Hermonie is pregnant, but then 10 minutes later she's not. In the book she had an abortion, but in the movie they don't bother to tell you that.
