Solid state often works pretty good for bass. Guitars not so much.

Your bass tone is awesome. What you want to add would only make it awesomer.

Those rigs of doom are more like rigs of dumb. The only guy that got it right in the whole thread is the dude with the vintage SVT and Sunn stuff. The best rig I ever heard was Dickie Peterson's. He had an old SVT head, a Traynor of some sort and an 8x10, 4x12 and 2x15.

It's amazing. It has the sweetest distortion ever and even though I don't really do tremelo, this one is killer and I find myself fooling around with it at low volumes. The guy who had it was kind of a dope (harmonica player lol) and he said "yeah I stuck some rags in there to deaden it a bit". Well fuck, have a look at what "some rags" amounts to:

That is one t-shirt, three kitchen towels, one enormous bail of cotton and two thousand cotton balls. He's lucky he didn't burn down his house before he sold this amp.

At any rate, I'm pleased as punch.

That's what I'm sayin! He had a piece of pressed cardboard like from the back of a notepad nailed on with tiny brads and when I yanked it off that shit literally bulged out at me. I was flabbergasted.

I haven't looked the electronics but I'd guess it's roughly five watts. There are four tubes if I recall (too lazy to go downstairs just now) and a ten inch speaker. It's really fat and I'll probably leave it up at Big Sound while you and the lads are in there.

I've also spruced up that little Marshall Studio 15 and it'll be up there too. It sounds so much better than it did before.

I did some more wiring work for Dan and he mentioned wanting to sell his other cab that has the new Jimi Hendrix Greenbacks or whatever because it was so much brighter than his other cab with vintage Greenbacks (which I now own). I aksed if he knew that Celestion recommends like 2-300 hours for break in and he said no. So the Soldano dudes gave me a variac for free and I'll now be breaking in speakers with the quickness.

I'm going to send that pic to some friends from my last job. That is fucking hilarious.

I've got a Kalamazoo Mark 1, and it is 5 watts. I'm pretty sure the Mark 2 is identical except for the added tremolo. Great little amp, I actually scored mine for 50 bucks a few years ago at Trading Musician (god, that place is notoriously fucking overpriced) up in your neck of the woods.

My boss can afford whatever amps he wants (he has a garage full of vintage Fenders) and he uses that same model of Kalamazoo for low-wattage stuff. Great amp.

Basically a standard with dot inlays and P90's, and different tuners. Only mod I am planning will be to swap those tuners with the typical Gibson flower-pot type, preferably locking if I can find 'em.

Anyhow, I'll answer part of what you mentioned publicly. I got the variac speaker break-in idea from Southbay Ampworks. Basically you just run 60hz AC out of the variac at very low voltage to the speaker you wish to break in. It works two to three times faster than playing and can be set and walked away from so it'll break in your new speaker while you're somewhere else riffing away on your pimp old shit. The guy recommends not exceeding eight hours at a time to avoid overheating the voice coils. And for no reason at all here's a picture of my dirtyass variac while I was cleaning it:

Shame that all his money couldn't buy him good taste. OH SNAP Anyhow, I just love the little amps. I've acquired all sorts of radical shit in recent history but the ones I get the biggest kick out of are the Goldtone, BH5 and now the Kalamazoo. Which are all five watts. Also, that is a pimp's SG.

A good deal at Trading Musician? The devil you say! I like to look once in awhile but that place is outta control. It's no wonder they have so much stuff. Nobody can afford to buy the shit.

Well I haven't posted in this thread for a long ass time... since I think I got my little 5'' monitors and MIDI controller I believe. Anyhow, I just picked up this bad boy last night: the alesis ion. Josh already knows about it... he partially influenced the decision by planting a seed in my head with the alesis micron... this was just a much more logical choice for me. So far I haven't had much time to dick around with it yet, but most of it is already over my head... haha. I don't understand some of the features like unison, ring mod, hard/soft sync, sample and hold, and even just how to change the pitch bend from 2 semitones to 12, and the manual isn't very helpful for that either. Getting this thing to fully integrate with Ableton Live will be a nightmare.

I can't really comment on it too much yet, though. So far it just kind of sounds like all of my VA softsynths. It's an amazing feeling to play without any discernable time gap between striking the note and hearing the tone. it does have a very intuitive and easy to follow interface, which I'm in love with already. One of the things that really turned me on about the synth was that all of the knobs rotate 360 degrees, so when you switch patches, the knobs are already in their relative position. The knobs on pretty much every other synth have a start and an end point, so when you switch patches the knobs are all re-arranged according to the patch, but their physical positions represent the last patch you were using. It's hard to explain, and probably not that big of a deal to a lot of you, but it really gets me off having these knobs.

I want to play with the vocoder but I don't have a XLR-->1/4'' cord to plug in a microphone into the synth :(
