I have no love for 5 strings.
THe reason it needs a battery is because it has what are called Active Pickups. They use an electrical charge to generate a stronger magnetic field than standard coil pickups.

Hey, that's cool. I always get confused on a five string, and I start playing shit wrong.
Active pickups are nice and "hot" or whatever. Right?
LOL I don't even know why I bothered posting this on TNL, of course all of you miserable fuckers are going to try and down on my parade.
So far I'm in love with playing this thing. Beats the hell out of the shitty squier J-bass I've been playing for the past month!! (That thing had no personality) The 5th string has been fucking with me, but I figure if I learn on the 5 string it won't be a problem, as opposed to learning on the 4 and then trying to figure out the 5 after you have one method cemented into your head.
Josh, I'm a little curious about stringing this thing up, because I don't know jack shit about basses or guitars. The standard 5 string set up is BEADG, with the addition of that low B. Now, I'm GUESSING that the bass was meant to be played like this, and that messing around with it could make it go out of tune easily or something... I was reading about messing around with drop D tuning or some bullshit... Like I said, I don't really know what I'm talking about. Anyhow, I really like the idea of having EADGC instead, with the high C instead of the low B. Any idea if this would make would make it sound shitty since the its made to do the opposite? I'm going to try it regardless, but I'd like to have some idea of what to expect...
you can leave the thread if you want to be like that.
This is probably the only thread on TNL that me and josh (and others) refuse to act like tools in.
Personally, I wanted to tell you that your bass sucked because it has active pick ups in it (which I hate), looks ugly, has an ugly finish, and looks wanky. But I kept that to myself as none of that has anything to do with you enjoying your bass or learning to play.
Break it up you faggots. Napalm, people are allowed to not like your bass, if you enjoy playing it then who gives a shit?
Most of the posters in this thread prefer 4 string basses, but neither 4 or 5 is superior, its more a matter of comfort. Also, with pickups there are basically 2 main types, active and passive. Like Icarus said, Active pickups require a battery and use an electric charge to strengthen the magnetic field, which makes them naturally louder and gives them a different tone over passive pickups. Once again, this is one of those areas where neither is better and its a matter of preference, and most of the posters here prefer passive basses. I prefer playing a passive bass, but my dream bass is active (a Wal).
As for tuning, you can pretty much do what you want, aslong as it isn't completely retarded. You can probably fuck your neck if your strings are too tight or loose for a long period of time.
And Ironplant, you could be a little nicer, nobody likes to have their gear shat on.
Only thing to worry about with alternate tunings is to make sure the tension on your neck is well balanced.
Otherwise you get snapped strings, and later down the road, fucked up necks.
I like tuning the bass in tritones:
C--F#--C--F#
You can get a really nice variety of chords from it beyond simple major/minor stuff, though that stuff is still accessible if you need it.
Here'a my tuning: How low can you go?
I've never found a use for alternate tunings. ONCE in the studio I used a 5 string bass with the low B tuned to a C (might have been a C#). But that was only for one song. (it needed it)
I've considered setting up the strings in 5ths, like a cello, and wanking around a bit, but I think I'd just rather learn how to play a cello. This is not to say that alternate tunings are dumb, I just find that because I'm primarily a punk "musician" I've never had a use for it.I don't think he was pissing or moaning. You just woke up with your man pants on.
