You guys are probably right. The bass amp I'm borrowing from my buddy is about on-par with his squier bass guitar in terms of quality, so that would explain it. Now, I need an amp for my synth and an amp for my bass.... I'd like to kill two birds with one stone here (especially since I like to laydown basslines on my synth) and possibly see if I could get some sort of combo amp that spans the entire spectrum? I don't know if this is a far fetched question or not.... Or maybe I would be better off getting a bass amp and then a PA for the synth? I'm just another broke 20 something year old trying to get the most practical bang for his buck.

I just found a line on a Traynor YGL 3-A head and a no name 4x12 for $275!

As long as the dude gets back to me I don't see any reason I won't pick this up.

Any experience with Traynor?

I'm probably getting a 1963 Ampeg 2x15 cabinet with the original speakers for $200 this weekend. Haha.

what sort of tone do you want?

some bass players like a lot of clean and run their bass into a power amp, then a cab.

the problem with this is that it will limit you very early on in what sort of tones you can get. Also, you will will need two different speaker cabs for this set up as key boards might not sound good through the bass cab as guitar and bass speakers are voiced to sound good with their respective instruments.


having said that, a ton of people don't give a shit about what I just said and run keys through a guitar and/or bass amp anyway. Guitar speakers don't really have the frequency response for keyboards.



Ultimately, I'd say try before you buy. You may like a set up that isn't technically the best.

Synth into bass amp = awesome.

also, napalm, try to not cheep out and use a guitar speaker cab. Guitar speakers are not designed to handle the low end of bass amps so you could bust the cones in them.

(it won't always happen) but if you are worried about money, its a problem to try to avoid.

The amp is always more important than the guitar.

Anyways, the saga continues. Every time I get money it burns a total hole in my pocket. When you combine this personality trait with the bad economy that forces crazy Craig's list sales you get alot of junk. But my junk is cool! Check it out.

The first thing is a '64 Ampeg Reverberocket. I went out to this guy's house to buy some ridiculously cheap speakers and it was just sitting there. I asked him what was up with it and he said he was going to sell it next month. When he told me the price I suggested that he sell it right then.

Next up is a pair of JCM 800 model 2210. I bought the first one because I always enjoyed that nasty Marshall distortion and the second one was literally insanely priced. I feel lucky to have been the first guy to call this philanthrpist back. I got both for less than I'd have expected to pay for one six months ago. The idea was I'd make the best out of both and then sell the one I liked less. Well fuck. The one has 6550's and the other has EL34's and they sound totally different and now I'm hemmin and hawin about selling one. We'll see how much I hem and haw when next month's rent comes around.

I had Soldano build me the FAT 2x12 in baby blue with oxblood grill. It's epic but the speakers still need alot of break-in.

When I saw Zeke at the block party Mark blew up a some ridiculous Mesa head and they brought him out a Sovtek Mig 60. When he fired it up I knew what I wanted for Christmas. It was so the sound. So just the other day there was one for a price I couldn't believe or refuse. I haven't taken it to the studio but it sure does sound right cranked up as far as I can crank it in my sleepy little neighborhood.

Last pic is the Faces of Fuzz. I got none of these offa CL. The top lime green one is the one I made from a kit. The red one is a germanium one that Segata-Sanshiro sent me as part of a trade and I got the Hendrix reissue one for a sack of weed. I went and got me an 1/8 and on the way home I stopped at a friend's to smoke him out. He was all "Where did you get this? Sell me it. Give me a piece of it. Let me have the guy's number." and blah blah. Finally he said he'd give me his fucking $150 Fuzz Face and what was I to do?

if you honestly believe this, maybe we now know why you aren't very good.

nothing will hold a person back more in learning to play in the beginning than a crappy instrument.

Crappy instruments go out of tune easily, or never get in tune. Some instruments can be really uncomfortable to play because of the dress or lack of dress on the fret board. Some hands don't work well with certain neck widths. And some fret sizes are better for chording than lead and vise-versa.

So no, for someone in Napalms position, the guitar is as important if not a little more than his amp. At this point the bass can be a greater hindrance.
