Tele's are super bright, i love the tone. Ultimately, the best thing you can do is go try some. Find something you like, then try and find it used or cheaper.

I personally hate Tele's because they are so bright, not to mention ugly as hell imo. They are great guitars though if you are going for that sound. Fenders in general I love for their clean tone and how much they cut through (due to being so bright). That is why you see so many blues soloists etc. playing them.
In fact, I'd have to say that I personally would probably never buy another Fender guitar again, but since you already have a Gibson you have the dark, bass heavy tone thing covered. Knock yourself out.
Fender basses? Different story. You can never go wrong with a P or J-Bass, P being my preference. I really want to get an Ernie Ball Stingray. Those basses are so damn punchy. And that's what we all want right? PUNCHY BUT WARM.
I always thought Telecasters were ugly too... but get a white one, ditch the neck pickup, and throw a black pickguard on there and you are 100% STYLE.
I prefer Fender guitars because I like the neck. Gibson necks have always been an issue for me. Its like holding onto a tree trunk. I like to take Fender guitars and put a humbucker in the bridge position. To me, this makes the guitar sound mostly perfect. Though there is something to be said about the ear shattering power of a single coil in the bridge position. Motherfuckers will notice what you're playing. You're also one Marshall stack away from pretty much nailing the Ramones guitar sound.
The deal is play everything. Don't go in with preconceived notions. Play every guitar you can, and find something you love.
Get your kid a used guitar. Unless he's a homo he'll like it more than a new one anyway, and he won't be all depressed when he drops it and dings the paint.
This.
I tend to like weird necks. My first guitar is the only one that I have with a normal neck. My fender lead II had a neck like a baseball bat cut in half. My Yamaha lawsuit has a super thin shredder neck and the mosrite has its signature tapered width neck.
ANYWAY, I'd let the boy try everything he can get his hands on. Its important that the neck feel good to him if you want him to play it and get better. Otherwise, it will be just another guitar in some kids closet that no one loves.
But if he keeps it in the closet for 40 years he can sell it for $10,000.
the age of that sort of nonsense is over. It would have to be something very limited that someone famous will use.
I need to pick up, like, an 85 Jackson or BC Rich super-pointy metal guitar and sell it in 40 years to some Yngwie Malmsteen or Steve Vai fan. Fucking mid-80's vintage shredders axe, bro. This shit is legit.
My 2nd guitar was a white BC Rich Warlock.
I painted KILL down one of the points. It was punk as fuck.
That's what she said.
*edit* I also attached a pic of the tubes I scored at that garage sale. The stacked USPS boxes are all full of loose tubes and there are a few boxes in my office that didn't get in the picture. I got all of those plus a SHIT TON of resitors/caps/transistors etc for $200.
As far as the subject at hand goes, I suggest a Gibson SG. Angus Young plays one of those.
*second edit* Well my first amp mod is now set in stone. I had my OR-120 taken apart because there was a bit of maintenance that needed doing. The tech guy from Soldano saw it and informed me that there was a bit of a design flaw with the phase inverter that caused these things to eat EL-34s for breakfast. In later 70s models it was fixed but for some reason the 90s reissues have the flawed PI from the original early 70s schematic. So he drew me a picture which I didn't fully understand and had to have explained to me. But now I'm just waiting for parts. I'll put up pix when I'm done. It's kind of exilherating to have my first one be on such a monsterass amp.
Son of bitch sold the VTM!
Craigslist is fucking me big time lately.
