What the fuck is this shit?
How to be a bitch vol. 1
I thought that might be your take on it.
It was an interesting read imo. Music by mcdonalds is how it reads. I bet this list would work for being a corporate whore for any form of entertainment.
What is the definition of 'success'? I suspect the writer of that article and I differ greatly in regards to this fundamental concept. But he was right about all sorts of shit honestly.
So my facebook friends may or may not have noticed this but I started a little facebook page for my pedal project Black Hand Analog. There's obviously very little happening there but I did put up a very goofy demo clip via soundcloud. Things have been good. I went out to Tad's house and we spent the day making those clips. He was impressed with my pedal and I was way impressed with his studio and especially his work. Anyhow, I have three prototypes built up and have used all three on stage. In fact I alternated between two every night of our little tour. I'm building a fourth proto using parts (just capacitors really) more like what I'll be able to get in bulk. I'm sure it'll sound the same (no mojo here, I promise!) but I have to check with my own ears. When that's done it's time to figure out PCB design, graphics and wholesale parts sourcing. I've got my work cut out for me!
Also, hooking up video game systems to a dj mixer is killer. I used to have my systems hooked up like that and we'd spin hip hop while people played Tekken 4 or whatever with the stupid soundtrack off but the sound effects still in the mix. It was really fucking cool.
Also Josh! I have your pedal and it will be fixed very shortly. Also I do have an Ampeg 4x12. An old V4 one. Oni gave it to me for free! It's unloaded but I'll just throw some Eminence Legends in there some day and it'll be mental.
The v4 cabs rule. Offer for TNL only. If you want my v2 cab (about 5 feet tall) come pick it up, or pay shipping (lol) and its yours. I no longer have the room, or the ability to haul it to shows. Only thing I ask is that you don't flip it for a while.
Yeah... like
The things he was right about are numerous actually. Being conscious of how to do good business doesn't make a person or band a dick. Putting 'business' (ie: pie in the sky pipe dreams of money or even actual money) ahead of conscience does. And writing an article with a tone like that does as well. There's a million ways to be, and being cool and employing a few of the intelligent things in that article are definitely not mutually exclusive.
I don't like it because my definition of success is not his. I don't want to make a career out of my music, I do it because I need to.
Different strokes and all.
And yeah... he's totally right about a lot. especially on how to be a bitch
Like it or not, just look around you and you will find a ton of people trying to do every single thing mentioned in that article inefficiently and saying that it's not what they are trying to do. Look to the most bitter fuckers you know. Bound to be happening.
I believe you in particular, but I hear a ton of people put this attitude out front and then end up extremely put off when no one comes to their shows/buys their record/cares about them/etc. If this is a genuine attitude, I have complete and total respect for that. In fact I think people that operate this way are often responsible for the breadth of expression and creativity that's available in the first place, but running against the simple attrition of the persistant awareness of what it takes to take a band running, both financially and time wise, vs. the amount that's actually coming in takes a toll on people. It takes a certain type of self-confidence to exist in that world and I'm fairly certain that something like 80% of the people who say things like "I just do it for the love, don't care about the money" are full of shit. Not saying it doesn't exist, just that there are a lot of people lying about it.
How the hell am I finding out about this here.
There are some fronting motherfuckers out there, yes. I play shows in nike running shoes. My image is "sketchy guy in his 30's"
Fuck it.
