I actually had a blast with Red Faction. The story was no good, the action was mediocre, and the multiplayer was dull, but it still had something that hooked me long enough to still be playing it five years later.

Neo proves once again that he's the best poster on TNL, hands down.
I actually had contact with Volition through THQ about the time when Red Faction was coming out. Red Faction's GEO MOD technology sounded so awesome, and the gameplay was decent enough to draw people in. Unfortunetly all it turned out to be, like you mentioned, was a glorified demonstration of destructable environments in an otherwise completely mediocre game. Yet somehow the game turned out better than the sum of its parts.
They were really cool guys though. Pleasant to speak with and usually forthcoming on questions.
To me, the best thing VOlition ever did was the video "Summoner: Geeks".
It was on a preview disc for Summoner, and I think it might have been unlockable in game as well.

Isn't Freespace 2 legally free due to that EULA clause?
If so, everybody download it.
Yes it is. The HotU version is severely gimped, though.Quote:

I really enjoyed the original Red Faction a lot. The weapon selection, design, and reload animations were really cool, as was the overall design work of the game. The control was tight and the level design was solid. The Geo-Mod stuff was very cool- when it worked, that is. I have to agree that it didn't end up working like they had hyped it. They claimed you'd be able to blow up anything at any time, which wasn't nearly the case.
Red Faction 2 was a little disappointing. The weapons and their design were fairly lame compared to the first game. Actually, the overall visual design was unappealing. There was this whole "Russian motif" going on that I didn’t like. They claimed that they expanded the Geo-Mod stuff, but I sure didn't notice. If anything, there was less of it.
I thought the Summoner games looked really lame. Never tried them.
As for The Punisher, that's a game I totally dug a lot. The humorous interrogation/torturing mechanic aside, it's a solid, bad-ass third-person action game with a shitload of variety in regards to weapons and combat options. Also, the black humor was refreshing and the character model for Frank Castle is one of the greatest things I've ever seen in a game. It's perfect. I keep hearing rumors of a sequel but I haven't seen or heard anything concrete yet.
Sopot was cool.
