So don't select the option.
As for the update, it's OK, but I'm still amazed that they haven't brought back dashboard-based group chat. Much more convenient than Vent at times.
There are dashboard based group chats, except they are private chats now. You can invite groups of people to chat, and you're not limited to the dashboard, you can be playing a different game then the person and still talk with them.
FINALLY! 360 may soon eliminate the need for XBMC depending on it's support of specific file types and codecs.Quote:

Since the auto downloading demos sounds like an option you would have to turn on, I have no issues with it.
I'm also really happy about the ability to play video files from an external source like an iPod and such.
I just got the update and the very first thing I did was watch some porn. If only it supported more codecs....
Microsoft supporting open formats, there's a good joke.
....
In other (completely unrelated) news, Saint's Row (the X360's premier wigger simulator) is getting a badly needed update. Major fixes include 4xFSAA support (?!), various UI fixes (hurr at not being initially warned that the final mission was a point of no return), and completely rewritten networking code. The game might actually work online now!
I dig what they've done to the arcade. Haven't tried the streaming shit yet, as I don't have service pack 2 :(
here's hoping by the time my second 360 gets here there's some kind of transcoding software for xp that'll let me play xvid and 264 over wmp11
Well, it streams WMV just fine, but the FF/Rewind controls are a little herky-jerky.
The auto downloads are AWESOME providing that i will get the content the second it is released.
Vision Camera support is improved as well. In the old dash, when you go to vision camera it takes a second to boot up a picture, and now it instantly works. And the lighting is better handled (I don't get that reddish hue anymore) and you have more lighting options.
Good call, Microsoft, on taking away easy access to game trailers. That shit should be buried deep within the bowels of the system.
Anyone know of a good (& free) program that will convert other video formats to wmv?
Windows Media Player?
Xeno, Cinemaforge will do that.
The Saint's Row online play now is DEFINITELY improved... It ran silky smooth when I gave it a test run a few minutes ago.
What's all this about?
http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_bl...15&sid=6160771Quote:
Microsoft released its Fall System Update for the Xbox 360 today and Internet forums were quickly buzzing with reports that the update had "bricked" users' consoles, rendering them unable to play games or even boot up normally.
While Microsoft is staying mum on the subject, the bulk of speculation is that the Fall Update is intended to brick Xbox 360s that have been modded. However, some posters are reporting problems with unmodded consoles being bricked, and forum-goers at Xbox Scene are saying that the update is not consistently bricking modded consoles.
Furthermore, Team Xecuter is reporting that bricked consoles can still be repaired relatively painlessly, and that Microsoft isn't banning GamerTags or specific systems from Xbox Live, something that would seem a distinct possibility if the company wanted to come down hard on modders.
So what's the deal here? If Microsoft intended to brick modded consoles, it didn't do a very thorough job of it (perhaps a warning shot to make people think twice about modding systems?). If it's an unexpected bug with the Fall Update, it seems convenient that it's happening primarily to modded systems.
Still, the few reports of the Fall Update bricking unmodded systems are troubling. While fixing the system might be an easy thing for people who cracked their systems open in the first place to mod them, it's still not something the average gamer is bound to be capable of doing.
Whether intentional or not, it seems the Fall Update is turning some Xbox 360s into paperweights. But with varying reports about who it's happening to and why, and Microsoft not explaining what's going on, there's no sure way to say which 360s will be affected by the problem.
Hmm...kinda scared to download the update now.
Any word yet on if they've fixed the problem?
I downloaded the update and my 360 is fine
no, but seems some demos simply do not work at all after the update (NBA2k7)
That & saves files for Enchaned Arms seem to load slower (maybe other games too)
heard good things on these:
winAVI
Super:
http://www.erightsoft.net/Superdc.html
Videora:
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/Xbox360/
may take hours of converting even small files though
Mine updated fine. Why they buried the game videos is a complete mystery to me. It was perfect the way it was.
Wow, streaming my CD collection through WMP11 is the bizness. Nice stuff.
I was hoping this update would include a web browser :(
also, anyone knows if it's possible to stream or burn WMV HD files on CD/DVD and play it on the 360?
like this stuff http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...tshowcase.aspx
This update is so fucking hot there's almost no words to describe it.
Menu's look better, functionality is improved (no lag in loading the menu of XBLA games you have and streaming video) and the option for downloading demos automatically is is a good touch.
I guess there's no Live Arcade game today. Feh. Not that MS doesn't have enough other things to deal with right now.

Has anyone been able to track down a wireless headset yet?
They won't be out until next week, won't they?
on an unrelated note, I'm lollin pretty hard at ea's latest price gouging experiment with the marketplace and NFS Carbon... apparently you buy performance tuning settings from the live marketplace, and those combined with the "collectors edition update" comes out to 4000 fucking points, which is essentially double the cost of the game
I'm lovin these micro transactions more & more, I can't wait until next year or the year after when you have to spend $30 on updates just to be able to finish a fucking game
Why is the wireless headset such a big deal? The cable only goes to the controller, that's not that big of a distance.
They were originally going to ship yesterday, but it looks like there was a delay.
And its not really that big of an improvement over the wired headset, but hey, they're just $49.99 at the TNL Amazon Store!!
For those of you who were too lazy to set up a Silver account with a UK or Japan address for the Rainbox Six demo, you can now get the demo with your US account.
I hope no one supports EA with their horrific download schemes. Let that garbage rot.
Seriously what is wrong with this company?Quote:

EA, who else, released the first load of downloadable content for their annual Need for Speed upgrade on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The game didn’t even warrant a Collectors Edition but if you were smart enough to not buy it you can now upgrade for only 800MP with ‘The Collectors Edition Upgrade’, just as we predicted. There’s a bunch of other stuff that should’ve been in the game in the first place too, complete list after the jump.
* The Collectors Edition Upgrade - 800 Points
* Performance Drivetrain Bundle - 400 Points
* Performance Engine Boost Bundle - 400 Points
* Performance Handling Bundle - 400 Points
* Ultimate Performance Bundle - 800 Points
* Muscle Car Autosculpt Body Kit - 300 Points
* Autosculpt Tuner Body Kit - 300 Points
* Autosculpt Exotic Body Kit - 300 Points
* 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 - 80 Points
* 2004 Lamborghini Murcielago - 80 Points
* 2006 Dodge Viper SRT-10 - 80 Points
My god, that's absolutely retarded. It makes horse armour seem like an excellent deal.
Fuck this, fuck EA, fuck microtransactions. NFS Carbon sucks anyway.
Hurr.
How much of that are just quick-release DLCs, and how many of them are required to get the content in game? Does this mean that I can't buy performance parts or a Skyline without paying EA first?
Yuck. I'm one of the more forgiving people here when it comes to microtransactions, but geez this is just a terrible implementation (on top of a terrible game).
I bet they're in the this gen editions that cost $10 less too, like the stupid Madden and Godfather microtransactions.
Only way they'll get the message is if no one buys it. I hope people are smart enough to make this fail.
demo for Eragon is up on the marketplace. Seems like they put in a xbox 1 demo because that game sure as hell can't be a 360 game. Awful graphics, sloppy gameplay and just disappointing considering its from the same dudes who did LOTR: Two Towers (thanks for the heads up on that bVork).
Considering that Eragon is by the same developers as LOTR:TT and Forgotton Realms: Demon Stone, the similarity is not exactly unexpected.
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/02/ea...speed-unlocka/
Check it out, EA just made themselves look like even bigger asses.
One can unlock all of the unlockable content already in the game for $49.25.
Not bonus material
Not upgrades.
Not the collector's edition.
Everything that's in the game already.
Anyone who does this is just plain dumb. There's no other way around it.
I'm fine with stuff you can buy that you can otherwise earn in the game. I'm fine (but maybe less so) with DLC that is in the more expensive Collector's Edition that you can buy for your regular version to make it the Collector's (good for if you can't find the CE so you buy the cheaper version instead). I'm not fine with DLC that costs money that you can't get elsewhere that comes out the same day your game does. You can argue "Well, there's 50 tracks in our game and 35 in the other games on the shelves, so we still gave you more from the get go"...but it's kind of like a slap to the face. And I'm definitely NOT fine with stat upgrades that work in MP that you can't get any other way. It separates the haves and have nots and it's really lame.
I don't think they'll allow this for MMOGs that allow for player to player transfers. The stat boosting stuff in Tiger Woods is riding that line, but that is non-transferrable, and is completely obtainable in-game.
If you could buy points for goods that could then be turned into real money on a third market, then the goverment could possibly get involved with taxes and accusations of these games being illegal gambling and whatnot. A lot of companies are afraid to touch real-money transactions in MMOGs due to this.
Companies can, and should, charge as much as the market will bear. If people are happy to pay $110 for NFS: Carbon, then good for EA for charging it.
Yeah, except no one has to "earn" their stripes and go through the motions of plodding through the game(s) to get better cars, make your golfer better, make your team better, etc...
On the one hand, I'm for it, because who the fuck has all the time that's needed to complete all of this shit just to be competitive online?
On the other hand, I think it sets a bad precedent because of all the people that probably will pay for it in order to be competitive.
Paying for cheat codes is stupid. Really, incredibly, mind-bogglingly stupid.
Charging for them is merely contemptible, though, and that's better than stupid.

Edit: Nevermind.
It was bound to happen, downloadable movies and TV shows. At least it looks like the movies are actually very reasonably priced, especially in comparison to a DVD.
Oh puh-lease.Quote:
Movies will be output in a rental format. This is necessary in part due to the limited space on an Xbox 360 hard drive and the massive size of an HD movie.
There not actually that bad. I believe its about 4-5 bucks for a HD movie. I don't know what the prices of renting at Block Buster is, but I though it was around the same or more there. Obviously, its not anywhere near as good as Netflix, but might be a good deal for people who don't use Netflix.
they'd better change their tune about releasing a bigger hdd, or at least make their service support external storage devices.
with prices of 300+GB drives falling below $100, there's no excuse for them not to.
I'd pay $4 to see a movie in HD not often, but you know if I were bored and didn't feel like going out.
I can pay $5.99 for a HD movie on DirecTV and keep it on my Tivo as long as I want. And without waiting overnight for it to download.
Yeah, pretty useless for old stuff you can get OnDemand or Tivo for cheap/free... But for new releases, it's not a bad deal.
Think of it this way, a new release DVD costs $15+, and you'd only watch it once in the first 6 or so months you own it anyhow. You watch it for $5 on 360, by the next time you feel like watching it, the DVD will probably be going for ~$10... Works out about even. And if it's a movie you turn out to not really want to watch multiple times, you saved $10.
There's a free Family Guy theme and gamerpic pack on Marketplace now.
Theme kinda sucks, but the pic pack is nice. 9 pics in it.
Speaking of that strategy, is there a good list somewhere of which discs are dual layer and which aren't?
LOL, Eurogamer gave it an 8...and then said in the last or second to last paragraph "Our review right now is limited to offline play".
edit: Oh, I posted this in the 360 thread by accident. Then again, it might as well be the GoW thread.
GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WAR GEARS OF WARGEARS OF WARGEARS OF WARGEARS OF WAR
I just got back from Gamestop, they got them in a half hour ago!
I dunno if anyone's playing Tiger Woods '07, but this piece of shit has locked up on me 4 times in single player mode already. :P
*raises hand*
I don't use NetFlix.
i don't even know what netflix is, so don't feel bad.
Hot HD-DVD drive unboxing shots:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/09/x...-dvd-hands-on/
I use Comcast on Demand for movies. If 360 could offer as much choice and speed, I would dump Comcast.
I don't either. Like RoleTroll, I use OnDemand. That + subscription to most premium channels = pretty signifigant library of stuff to watch at no extra charge.
I just rent movies at the grocery store for $1.
Lost Planet multiplayer demo has a date, Nov 23. I'm sure everyone here has played the E3 Lost Planet demo, and knows just how great this game looks, and the gameplay isn't too shaby either. On Nov 23, we will finally be able to see how the online multiplayer is going to pan out. I'm looking forward to this game, but I have a sneaking suspicion that I will be way to into GoW still and R6:V to spend too much time on the demo.
http://www.selfserviceworld.com/images/SSWkrogerdvd.jpg
Is that the same thing they have at McDonald's?
http://redbox.com/
Same idea, probably better.
Since I'm playing catch-up on demos:
GRAW - Pretty damn cool, I'll grab it at budget because I know I won't spend the time until then.
RS:V - Fucking sweet.
NFS:Carbon - It sure is pretty but it plays almost exactly like NFS:U. I'd say I'd pick it up for the graphics at some point but we'll have better looking games by the time I find a copy for $10.
Sonic - Honestly I was expecting worse. Felt about on par with SA and I did enjoy doing speed runs on it, although if you're trying to explore it turns into dogshit.
NBA 2K7 - Holy shit does this game look nice. I suck at it and need to learn the controls but it plays pretty good from what I could tell. Not really my thing so even if I picked it up I probably wouldn't play it much.
F.E.A.R. - This is fucking terrible. I swear to god it looks twice as bad as it did on my PC and it controls like ass, this is a shining example of how not to do PC->console FPS ports. I fucking loved playing it on my computer but this... I don't know what this is.
