I just got an awesome deal on a Xbox system and now I need to pick up a HD to throw in there. Exactly what kind should I be looking for (EIDE or SATA?) and what can I expect to get (in size) for around $60?

Why do you want to put a HD in there? It's pretty useless. I think just about everyone streams video from their PC and plays games on DVD-R.
How do you actually burn the games to the DVD-R's though? I have a modded box, and I want to get all the games out of my living room.
with nero.
It's not like I want something huge, 80-120 gigs is more than enough. I just want to be able to throw some "stuff" on there if need be and it's nice playing some games directly off the hard drive since the load times practically disappear. I really don't have much interest in burning games, that almost ruined gaming for me back with the PS1.
But you're right, the main reason I'm doing it is for a media center front end.
Just stream videos from your computer. It's easy and fantastic.
I think napalm wanted to put a HD in a few months ago too, and everyone talked him out of it. It's a lot of work for no reason. The load times are still there.
Don't listen to the haters, putting a new HD into your box is definitely a great thing to do if you are willing to spend the time and money. It's kind of a pain to format the hard drive to work properly in the box, but once you do it, you'll be more then pleased. Ripping games directly to the HD and loading em up from there = heaven.
But like other people said, you can easily go without it by burning games onto DVD's and streaming media from your computer. It's just a matter of preference.
I have Madden '07 loaded on my stock Xbox hard drive. Putting any other Xbox game on any hard drive is wasteful.
omfgninjas brings up a good point. If you're going to go with the hd option, don't bother buying anything that's bigger than maybe 2 or 3 gigs.
I've installed plenty of HDs into friends' xboxen and shit. I have a standard Seagate 10gig HD in mine (I won the Microsoft 2 gig lottery).
The other day, I dug up an unused 40 gig HD... And I found a better use for it than putting it in my Xbox.
