Sony says taking the rumble out is saving consumers $$. Thanks for caring about reasonable price points Sony!
I'd rather pay $45 and have rumble.
NCSX started japanese PS3 pre-orders...

My manager was told at the annual GameStop manager conference in Texas that the PlayStation 3 would come bundled with a Blu-ray copy of Talladega Nights the way the PSP came with Spider-Man.
DEAL BREAKER!!!
What? Why not Lords of Dogtown?
Why aren't you in the 360 thread crying about how 360 controllers are $50?
I did the exact same thing after the launch of the 360. I don't discriminate.
*phew* *12 hours later* i just woke up!

btw, i barely remember anything i posted! :(
How many people use the DVD drive in their PS2? I'm know there are people that do use them, but the quality is complete ass and for good reason, the DVD drives are cheap and worthless. What makes you think it will be any different for the PS3? Either they are losing an ungodly amount of money buy selling a BD player as well as all the components for playing games, or it is a really shitty BD player.
The stark difference here is that DVD was already the accepted next generation of video media, which isn't Sony's own proprietary media. In this case, it's a very expensive, mandatory format which has not exactly taken the world by storm.
Sounds like you need child proof medicine bottles and constant adult supervision marwan.
Yeah, that's what I was getting at.
The main point really is that games could use the space of blu-ray. CDs really are too small now but I'm not so sure about DVDs. Come 2010, it might be a different story. It's just the fact that Sony is determined (again) to make THE next DVD to print the royalty money that rubs people the wrong way.
this is what I was getting at, with hddvd and/or bluray developers can drop in all kinds of crazy high quality textures and game bits and 8 channel audio and 1080p video and extras and other related types of shit into their games without having to worry about compressing them for that "true" (for lack of a better term) high quality HD experience
edit:
yeah I'm not really factoring in the quality of the bluray player here, I'm talking about solely the games aspect.... I'm sure the bdrom movie player will be pretty abysmal, budget-line even, but with 25-50gb discs people that make video games can cram ungodly amounts of high quality content into their games without resorting to crap like bink video or whatever to get it all compressed to the point where it's artifacted and dulled, or having to rely on (multiple) dl dvd discs to fit huge games on. One could also argue that having the bdrom on the ps3 will all but stop piracy on the console until either people learn how to boot isos off the hard drive or bluray burners for pc become cheap enough for joe consumer (they're like $1200 right now)
Someone's *too* excited about the PS3. Is that you, marwan?
The tattoo completely sucks
I was thinking it would be a Playstation 3 logo. At least he's not that dumb.
The "Blu-Ray lets games be bigger" argument just doesn't work. Prettier, sure, but the original Civilization was on floppy disks, as was Elite, Betrayal at Krondor, the original Elder Scrolls, etc. Game assets can get ludicrously huge, but the games themselves won't be any bigger.
-edit- I know nobody here said it, it's just something I've been hearing over and over again elsewhere.
James
I haven't played Elite or Betrayal at Krondr, but the original Elder Scrolls (Arena) was huge but randomly generated so it really doesn't count. Daggerfall was even bigger but also mostly randomly generated.
Bigger games with set content would require more space as graphics get better. The trend now seems to be towards smaller and shorter games with a few exceptions so like I said how useful BluRay will be for games remains to be seen.
PS3 PS2 memory card adapter:
http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/ar...0024330901.jpg
i think this is the first time we ever see this.
You're right.
Every XBox 360 game could fit on a single CD if they wanted to, but all of the developers are lazy programmers who like to spend months to write bloated code that nobody will see.
None of that extra space goes towards better AI, better textures and other graphical effects, etc.; it's all just filler.
Hell, maybe Nintendo had it right all along. A single CD might be too much space as well. Let's put everything on 64MB cartridges.
Seems right to me. In the 16-bit era, memory space skyrocketed when they went from cartridge to CD. We were told that games would be 100's of times bigger. Instead, it was the exact same game with extra music and crappy video footage.
When Neo-Geo games were ported to the SNES, it became undeniable that the Neo coding was very bloated.
And the extra space on the PS2/Xbox versus the GC made little difference. 1.5gig versus 4.7gig (9.4 at most).
Besides, they can do lots of layers on DVDs these days. Worst case scenario, a game is on 2-4 discs.
AI routines and "graphical effects" hardly take up any space. It's the textures and sound that make up the big chunk. Here's the problem though: Resistance's and MGS4's textures (I dunno about the rest) don't make leave me in awe of the advantage of Blu-Ray. They aren't any better than textures on games that fit on a DVD.
I can't remember where I heard it, but some company was showing off a technology that reduced texture size by 70% recently. Wherever I read it was talking about how they had an amazing looking 15mb game.
Hey speaking of being intentionally dumb out of context, why do you sign your name at the bottom of every post you write?
Do you just assume everyone that takes the time to read your drivel can't look an inch up or to the left to see your already present name? Or do you just like being needlessly repetitive? It's one or the other.
Well, maybe both.
ps: if you're going to take time out your life to reply to what I write, maybe you should offer something better in return than insults. Just a thought.
OMG CONFRONTATION!
It's a shame, really.
I mean he comes in and makes that comment, fully aware that it's out of context to begin with and makes a vapid statement with no substantiation. I give a sarcastic reply to indicate that maybe he should give some basis to his post, and he can only answer with some half-assed insult.
Followed by his name, in case I forgot who wrote it.
There's always the 96kb kkreiger.

That screenshot equals over half the size of the game.
James knows Kung Fu, I witnessed it first hand.
James made me lol.
Well, remember that the medium was new, and developers were wide-eyed at the promise of all that storage. The problem was that most didn't have a clue as to how it should be used. Until they got the hang of the technology, games were just cartridge versions with CD sound.

it's gonna be fun watching these auctions pop up and disappear again all the way up until launch (or until ebay starts banning ps3 auctions altogether)
edit: lol http://cgi.ebay.com/Playstation-3-Pr...QQcmdZViewItem
I thought ebay already bid these illegal.
EDIT: Yeah, see?
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/10/ps...-or-it-begins/
yeah they're illegal, but that's not gonna stop people from trying (and providing those of us with half a grain of common sense with comedy gold at the outrageous prices they want) and failing hard
If Sony were smart they would have priced all PS3 units through the end of 2006 at $1,500. They would have even announced that on whatever day they would assume normal prices. That way they, instead of these people, would get a cut of that action. Pricing them at $600 is the same false sense of corpo-altruism that leads teams to price tickets at $75 when they can easily get $500.
lol, apparently Tom Nook bought out that million dollar PS3. That's a shitload of bells.
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php...d=68677&page=1
It's a long article, but worth a read if you're still after all the other shit, interested in the PS3. Honestly enough, it seems like Sony's Online set up won't suck.Quote:
Oh - and it's all free, too. The only place you'll be asked to fork over a penny is when you purchase something in the PlayStation Store - all of the online services, from sign-up right through to voice and video chat, are free, as is normal multiplayer gaming. There's no equivalent of the Xbox Live Gold account, where you're expected to pay extra for a further tier of services - the only things you'll pay money for are paid-for downloadable content, or subscriptions to premium services like massively multiplayer games.
I don't think he's denying those. I think he's saying that many Neo Geo games could have been done using less megabytes than they did which I is probably true. Since the games were never mass market and the cartridges so big physically, there wasn't as much need to squeeze them down.
it will suck
lol@ps3
Exactly. It's great that Sony finally realized having one user name is a good idea, but that really won't make the shit interfaces and matchmaking that the developers come up with any better. That's one of the things that makes XBL so great and usable are the unified standards that MS has created that all developers MUST follow if their game is playable online.
Tim Harford, a British economist who writes for Slate, wrote about this sort of thing last year regarding the 360. It's pretty much the same situation, so I will leave Mr. Harford to explain it:
http://www.slate.com/id/2132071/
I bolded the part that responds to your point about PR:
Also: http://www.slate.com/id/2132988/Quote:
Perhaps the sellouts are supposed to generate free publicity. By deliberately giving Xbox consoles away too cheaply today, Microsoft gets the column inches before Christmas, and that may boost demand and sell more in the long run. If you had put that theory to me last year I might have believed it, but after all the hot air over gasoline prices this fall, no longer. It's now obvious that you can get just as much publicity by raising prices as you can by selling out at low prices. But raising prices makes money, and creating lines of frustrated customers who can't get the product doesn't.
Maybe Microsoft is worried that this would be the wrong kind of publicity, because customers would dislike a price hike. That's possible, but the publicity is already bad: Many empty-handed customers seem convinced that Microsoft has a secret hangar in Roswell stuffed full of Xboxes that they've decided not to release just yet.
In any case, strange as it may seem, even if the consoles sold out at a higher price, the average Xbox aspirant wouldn't be any worse off: The increased price should be exactly balanced by the shorter lines, reduced aggravation, and greater chance of getting a console. Customers are infuriated by the shortage itself, whether that shortage is expressed in lines (as it is today) or in high prices (as it could be if Microsoft raised them). If Microsoft is going to aggravate its customers, why doesn't it at least make a buck out of it?
The second article has some ideas on why MS, full of smart people, keep the price low. The point that garners the most attention from Mr. Harford is the idea that people really are not willing to pay high prices for the 360, and MS deliberately priced it low to avoid that dilemma. That does not necessarily apply to this situation, as Sony not only had their experience with the PS2 to look at, but the 360. The internet backlash against the E3 price announcement was stunning, but Sony knows all their units will sell at that price, and much more.
And, he mentions:
Of course, if everyone is buying a PS3 to turn around and put it on eBay, this could create a cutthroat dog-eat-dog world on eBay where initial charges cannot be recovered. It's something I hinted at earlier in this thread, I think, pondering if the widespread knowledge (thanks to Sony and GameStop's limited preorders) of limited demand and eBay are in fact going to throttle prices (as opposed to 360 and PS2, where people expected to find them and preorders were taken freely).Quote:
What about those $700 consoles on eBay? If Tabarrok is right that the actual price is closer to $325, why haven't eBay prices collapsed? The answer may be that it is gamers who are acting irrationally. Very few people resell their consoles despite the high auction prices. Having grabbed a scarce console, gamers only think about using it rather than profiting from its resale. As a result, only a few consoles are up for sale and only the most desperate buyers compete for them. If more people put their consoles up for auction, the price would drop.
addendum: according to this link (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?op...1779&Itemid=2), 10% of 360 units were put on eBay. While a few got big four-figure prices, I think most got in the $150-$200 above market price. If 15% or 20% of PS3s go on eBay (60-80 thousand units), then people aren't even gonna get that.
From what I've heard, your only chance for four figure prices with the 360 was on launch day or very close to Christmas. The same will probably hold true for the PS3. I agree with diff that the profit potential will be lower or, at the most, meet the 360's launch. People dreaming of selling their system for $2000+ are doing just that.
I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 keep/ebay ratio is more towards 30%+ on eBay.
We got double our money on our 360, and it went up a week after launch. We'll be happy with that, or less. This, of course, depends if we keep the system... jury is still out.
I'd be happy to get enough, or almost enough, to afford a Wii. $2000 would be great though, I'll take that.
from Gamespot.
Nothing new, we all knew Sony is going to win the race eventually.Quote:
At the 2006 Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced that it was dropping the price of its lower-end-model PlayStation 3 in Japan. The drop will see the 20GB version of the next-gen console costing 49,980 yen (about $429) when it goes on sale in Japan November 11.
Following the announcement, analysts in North America--where the 20GB PS3 will still cost $499--were doubtful. UBS' Mike Wallace went as far as to call the move "a questionable business decision and a sign of weakness" on the part of Sony.
However, it appears that such price drops may only be the beginning. Over the weekend, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper cited a study by Enterbrain Inc., publisher of Famitsu magazine, as expecting "further price reductions" and a greatly expanded software catalog for the PS3 by the 2007 holiday season.
As a result, Enterbrain predicted that the PS3 will outsell its biggest next-gen rival in Japan, the Nintendo Wii, by the end of next year. However, in the near term, the company believes that the Wii will win out. It predicts that worldwide PS3 sales through the end of March will total 4.13 million units, while the Wii will move 5.47 million units during the same period.
Despite the delayed PS3 launch in Europe, Sony has a stated goal of shipping--not selling--6 million PS3s by the end of March 2007. Nintendo aims to ship 6 million Wiis in 2006 alone, and recent reports indicate it looks likely to surpass its target.
Sony sure does know how to develop an online interface.

At present, however, there's no system for actually reading or responding to messages while you're still in the game, as the operating system doesn't take resources away from games in order to do that - however, according to Harrison, that functionality may well appear in an OS update, presumably based on whether users actually express a desire for it or not.
So basically you can't communicate with anyone when you're playing a game unless they are playing that game. Awesome!
That's not what that says. It actually says you can't communicate at all with messages recieved while playing a game, but nothing about limiting cross-game communication. I'm not sure which of those is stupider, but it should be fixed at some point anyway.
[edit] Pseudo-nevermind, I get what you're saying now. I think if you're not already playing together you still can't read or respond even if it's the same game.
That's the reason for the bundles. Offer the system separately for $500-$600 "core package" and in a $1500-1600 bundle that has an extra controller or something. Release ten "core packages" and 399,990 bundles. The PR can honestly say that the system launched at $500.
I'm reading that Best Buy will have playable systems soon...
I hope its true...
I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic.Quote:
The PSP is ahead now? Huh.
there is a piece of hardware you can buy and attach to the 360 to transfer game saves. it's not an officially licensed product, i don't think, but it's easy to install and works just fine. the only problem is is that not all xbox games have been made playable on the 360 yet, and not all xbox game saves can be copied (the doa games come to mind).
link pls.
