WindowsXP has been destroyed

Alright, this is going to sound weird but it's something new and I don't know how to describe it so well.

Hub linked me to a file for a torrent called Aston. Aston is a theme program for XP in order to make it pretty. I installed, didn't like, tried to uninstall, but in the process my XP got fried. All I have now is the default wallpaper but no icons, taskbar, start menu, other programs, etc. I'm typing this from the very computer that just died.

I need immediate help. I have no idea what's going on or what to do. I did notice rundll32.exe (or something similar) was always locking up when I restarted my computer so I removed it but I don't know if it's a worm or what.

Please please please help me out. I'm freaking out.

All I can suggest, is that you do a Windows update and hope for the best. Either that, or you'll have to back up your files and do a complete recovery.

You can laugh all you want, it wasn't working. I'm thinking a worm but I'm not sure.

rundll32.exe is a necessary system file. probably all you can do now is boot from the xp disc and do a windows repair.

always make a restore point before running apps that edit the shell. flyakite is probabaly the "best" shell changer but even that still has some issues.

Anyone else want some links?

I pretty much have to reinstall Windows. I replaced the rundll32.exe file but nothing. I figure it just completely screwed my display and nothing short of reinstalling will fix it.

On a side note, the program was pretty cool but seemed too hard to change some features. It definitely isn't something for the rash to experiment with. I'll stick with WindowBlinds.

run Aston again.

The reply is so heartless. Also, either re-installing Aston or XP from a bootable disc (duh) is your best effort at restoring your computer back the way it was.

straight-up reinstall windows, it'll be the least headachey way to fix the problem
