That link pretty much confirms Afrika is import only I guess.
Finally recieved this game after waiting for NCSX to recieve a new shipment and then ship the game to me. Where's Videogame Depot when you need 'em?
Anywho, didn't get to play it too terribly much, but I played enough to get to the second area and get a pretty good idea of what the game is like.
Graphics are great. The animals look especially realistic and their animations are spot on. Really, really cool. My Mom and Dad came over to my place while I was in the middle of playing this game and they were both pretty impressed and we sat there playing it (well they were watching me play it) for a good 20-30 minutes. I always love my parents expressions and reactions when they see a new game, especially something impressive like Afrika, my Dad goes into his whole, "Well boy I remember when I first bought you your first Nintendo, games sure don't look nuthin' like that now. I had no idea you'd be playing videogames all these years later. It sure is something..." etc etc etc. Makes me chuckle. Afrika is a great game to show to people who don't play games. Haha, and my Mom the whole time was asking if I could control the Zebras and stuff.
The environments are cool, but a little dissapointing. You can see for miles and miles in the distance, and I thought the overworld would be a large Oblivion-esque size map to explore. That's not at all the case. There are specific confined areas you go to in the game. Each area is about as big as one of the islands/bouroughs/areas from GTA4 just to give some idea of their size. Impressive, but not what is was expecting/hoping.
Riding around in the jeep is cool.
The Japanese' idea of any race other than their own always strikes me as funny, and this game is no exception. You have the option to play as either a douche bag looking, beanie wearing White French 'tard with a goatee or a white American Barbie who comes equipped with Safari gear. It would have been nice to have better characters to play as or a customization option or something. It sucks playing as a character in a videogame who, if you ever met him in real life, would clothesline in a heartbeat.
The actual gameplay is cool. I mean, you take pictures of animals....that's it. But that's what I wanted, and the game does a fine job of it. You have tons of camera options, and just like a real wildlife photographer, you need to have tons of patience (I would guess).
The game is a lot of little moments, mixed up with a big moment every now and then. For example, you'll take lots of photos of zebras and giraffes and water buffalo etc for a while, and then you'll get the chance to take a picture of a cheetah taking down a gazelle. Driving alongside a cheetah in your jeep snapping away photos...that's hella exciting for this game.
Oh! And the music is straight out of a National Geographic doc. Big swelling orchestral scores that wouldn't be out of place in a movie about WWII. But the music only plays during certain times (like when snapping photos of the cheetah in your jeep), otherwise it's silent except for the sound effects - which are great. This game has the most realistic sounding breeze/rustling leaves effects I've ever heard. You can hear the wind whipping across the savannah and practically smell the real Africa.
I'm having a lot of fun with the game so far. It's hyper, HYPER detailed down to the way a giraffe will flick it's tongue out to grab leaves from a tree. The language barrier isn't much of a barrier at all. There's no story, and with every email you recieve a video of the animal performing the action you're supposed to take a picture of. Plus there are a couple really good FAQs out there (the GameFAQS message board especially). If you're thinking of getting it, dont let the language thing hold you back.
If you enjoyed the Planet Earth docs, or grew up reading National Geographic like I did, this is definitely a game for you and you WILL enjoy it. If you like animals and can appreciate the painstaking detail in this game, once again, you'll definitely enjoy. Hell, even if you're a photography buff, this game lets you play with aperture and f-stops and lenses etc. Very cool.
It's a real shame if this game doesn't come out in America. I don't understand why it wouldn't, but apparently it isn't coming out. Regardless of their reasons, it absolutely should. It's an excellent game.
Thanks for the impressions. I would like try this game but it's not a $60 purchase for me, so I'll wait for someone in Japan to start finding it cheap.
Everytime I see this goddamn thread, all I hear is this:
Sadly that song is not in the game. Nor does the game support custom soundtracks so I can put it in the game myself. Thus, I have to satisfy myself by softly humming it to myself as I cruise the savanah in my jeep.
So this and Aquanaut's Holiday are seeing Asian releases with English text. Afrika is out Dec 11 and AH is out Nov 20. Glad I waited on both counts. Would have bumped a relevant AH thread if there was one, but I'm not gonna start a thread just for me to talk to myself in. I can do that in this thread too! All I found was this one, which taught me that Six is the only person on TNL that I can trust: http://www.the-nextlevel.com/board/s...ad.php?t=17844
