Idiocracy

For some reason that continues to blow my mind, Mike Judge has made a new movie called Idiocracy and he did it with 20th Century Fox.

I thought Fox was going to trust the man and take the proper risk with this movie (it's high-concept stupidity about how average guy Luke Wilson goes into the future where everything is so retarded he's automatically the smartest man in the world), but they seem to be going out of their way to make this movie crash and burn. It opened in 130 theaters the week before with no publicity, trailers, commericals, and the worst poster I've seen for a studio release. It made no money because no theatre close to any city worth a damn has it, and in its second week it's already losing theatres rather than expanding.

Here's the IMDb page and it's getting decent reviews. I wouldn't watch it if it were playing near me (it has to take one hell of a movie to put me back in theatres) so I'm not really pissed off at the treatment, but more amazed at how much Fox loathes this movie and wants to sabotage it. So what do you think: another Mike Judge movie that's going to find life on DVD?

It has Luke Wilson, I have no doubt this movie will get a following on DVD.

Does Luke Wilson have that much cred? Whenever he's in a movie that doesn't feature any other Frat Pack guys, it's some junky chick flick.

I agree, it's a shame what's happening to this movie. After reading the Onion's review I'm determined to see it.

Enough that if the movie is actually funny, people will eat it up when released on DVD.

I saw it, it's good. I didn't even see a poster up at the theater.

Lots of funny matte paintings and visual gags.

I saw this when it opened here in Dallas a couple of weeks back. It was kinda hard to judge how good it was considering that it took me a couple of viewings of Office Space to really just GET it. My opinion right now is that this is a pretty damm funny movie that definatley deserves better treatment than its getting but I dont thinks it gonna be the cult hit Office Space was.

Office Space cost 10m to make, and got destroyed at the box office. Over the life of it's release it pulled in barely enough to cover the cost of the movie, but it made a shit ton on DVD. FOX is going to keep this movie in theaters for a few weeks and rush it right to DVD so losers like us will eat it all up and justify their shitty decision.

Is there a list of locations where this is actually playing? I'd like to go check it out if it's playing anywhere near me.

Fox can be pretty shrewd (I defended what they did with X-Men 3 in the official thread) but this would just be a stupid gamble. People are going to get the DVD no matter what, the big money is still in theatre releases and there's no reason they would stunt that just so they can maybe get delayed gratification with a special edition DVD.
