Silver PlayStation 2 finally coming to the US

Henry Ford once said with regard to the Ford Model T, "You can have it in any color, so long as it's black."

In the US video game market, Sony has traditionally sold the PlayStation 2 system in stores only in the color black. Other colors have been available in international markets, and on rare occasions in the US as Internet exclusive limited editions or contest prizes, but ordinary retail stores have never offered it in any color other than black.

This appears to be changing soon, as Sony will be bringing the silver PlayStation 2 to US retail stores beginning October 24. See the following link for evidence of this:

Damn. I channed out awhile ago and got the silver JP PS2. I would've gone with white but they were sold out everywhere.

I'm not too crazy about the silver, either. I think the reason black is always in is because everyone seems to agree on black.

Same boat except I've had DRE with Growlanser. For Growlanser 2 I Have to turn my PS2 on it's side. BUt that doesn't work for Growlanser 3. So I have to flip it upside down to start Growlanser 3. Go figure.

No it isn't, it's just hitting its prime and it's the #1 selling console in every territory on Earth. It has the best all-around release schedule of any system this holiday season. It still has plenty of major releases planned next year and beyond, and it hasn't even dropped to true mass market at $99 yet. They'll make their 'PS2 will have a 10 year lifespan' prediction.

The Sony rep that came into our store to tell us about the new PSP bundle also told us about this... I never posted about it because I figured no one gave a shit. I personally think it's retarded. The thought around work is that they want it to match the PS3 (which is going to be silver, right?) and also have something "new" to sell that'll be easier to get this christmas than a PS3.

Only reason they're doing this is to try to placate those looking for PS3's and not being able to find them.

"Oh honey, I know we can't find the new system, so let's get the last version in another color." Wost thing is, people're actually stupid enough to do it.

I said dying, not dead. There's still about 3 or 4 PS2 games I want. But I doubt I'll be playing many PS2 games late next year when there's 360 and Wii games to be played.

As such there's no way Sony is going to convince me to buy a new console just for a color change which I'll only enjoy over the course of four games.

I dont think anyone expects you to. It's a replacement system, and when it hits mass market price - $100 - the PS2 sales will skyrocket. Don't be surprised if its 2007's top selling system.

What? They are releasing a new color of the most popular system ever made. What the hell does it have to do with N64? They're not telling PS2 owners to rebuy their system, or telling people to buy a PS2 instead of a PS3. It's just another color.

Remember when N64 was failing and they released like seven fucking hundred different colors instead of just releasing new games? Well that was lame. I know that's not what Sony is doing, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the N64 days of releasing new colors late in a systems life to help increase sales.

Again, I know that's not what Sony is really doing, but I still get that vibe and between that vibe and PS3 being the trainwreck it is I've lost all my respect for Sony.

Its really not like that at all, because (A) it's one color, and (B) there are way more PS2 games coming out than N64 ever did (seriously).
