Pretty neat, I like most of their games (and love Valkyrie Profile) so I've got some high hopes. Also a relief that it's not one of their established franchises, though we saw what happened when they deviated (ahem, Radiata.)
Enchant Arms, Trusty Bell, and Infinite Undiscovery - Microsoft's got a strangehold on terrible RPG names.

Hasn't Tri-Ace had more Solo Crisis and Radiata Stories quality games than Valkyrie Profile quality? Possibly not but for whatever reason when I see their name i assume mediocrity.

Don't get me wrong, this excites me becuase it's Tri-Ace; but from what I've seen Bell looks to be the better game.

Wow. I was looking at upcoming release dates, and this game is scheduled to ship August 29th. Sweet! I can finally learn what Infinite Undiscovery means. Tales of Vesperia is also coming out around the same time, but I think I'm going to try IU first.
Anyway, I had no idea this game was coming out in little over a week. So that's cool. Bring on the rest of the Fall games.
This game reminded me of a Japanese attempt at a Western RPG. But not in a crappy Light Crusader kind of way.

Graphics are pretty mundane too. The character models are decent, but the environments are terrible. They're huge, sprawling flat areas with repeating ground textures. Dungeons are huge, and it's easy to get lost because everything looks the same, and the map system sucks.
The battle system is fun though, and you can have up to 8-12 people on your team all fighting together in real time.
I hope the new Star Ocean is better than this.
Anyone else pick this one up for cheap? What do you think?
I picked it up a while ago but it can't crack the rotation with Fable 2 and Fallout 3 in the same house.
The game gets better after you get past the dragon temple and reach the next town, but it never becomes great. It's saving grace remains the combat.
I'm guessing I was about 3-5 hours away from reaching the ending before I sold IU. The controls felt clunky throughout, and the added combat elements in latter stages ruined everything. Too many times you have to punch a few buttons to do what could've been accomplished easier with just one.
For example, you're running in the open and see an enemy whom you cannot hit but your teammates can defeat. You have to sheath your sword, pull out your flute, play a tune while not getting struck, then put away your flute, and type a command to have your allies attack. After a few moments, the enemy becomes invulnerable again, rinse and repeat.
Another example, your allies develop a status effect that intensifies as time passes in a stage. Eventually, they'll try to kill you and each other. You possess limited antidote unless you have leveled up an ally's synthesis ability by making items you don't need and then acquired items to synth the scroll to learn the antidote spell (not available for hours later). I forget how that effect reset itself in the meantime, but it wasn't by entering the next town. I know, that's a shitty explanation, but believe me, playing it is shittier than reading about it.
IU is a hack 'n slash action RPG that was afraid of becoming (and tried hard not to be) a hack 'n slash. Not necessarily challenging, just too much needless complexity. The characters were the only redeeming aspect. Overall not fun.
Nice impresions everybody. Pretty much just how I feel.
Yeah I forgot to mention the added combat elements. Those suck. Even the whole 'combination attack' system is horrible. It requires 3 button presses to select another team mate and then have them do something?! WTF, it should have been a single button press. And those elements you described Redco make me sure that I won't be beating this game, but I'll see how far I get.
I didn't go into this game wanting to dislike it, I definitely wanted to give it a chance. Especially because I heard the story and characters were by the guy that made The Record Of Loddoss War anime, and I really thought that series was great.
Voice acting is another thing this game fails at. JRPGs always used to have crappy english voice actors, but recently that's changed. Lost Odyssey was good, Valkyria Chronicles had good english voice actors, Tales of Vesperia, etc....this game not so much. And when, for once, I want to switch it to Japanese voices - turns out I cant, they don't include that option.
I'll probably keep playin it just for the heck of it until I get turned off by those battle elements Redco described.
Seik - Yeah, I really, really wanted to finish this game. I loved the character designs and their personalities. And even though they all look like ventriloquist puppets when they talk, the main girl still is hot. :portalhug: The ally homicide thing is something that can be corrected in a couple stages after it appears, so you if you can stomach that it's fine. You just have to end up skipping enemies or using rare items to survive til you learn a new song. (Synthesis is an excuse to force you into item fetchquests and therefore is one of my top gaming pet peeves.)
The invisible enemy thing was the deal breaker because it came not long after I tried to get over the previous hurdle learning the antidote song. I actually like mindless anime-styled button-masher action-RPGs (Phantasy Star Universe, Tales of, Star Ocean, etc). Using the flute 2+ times per enemy brought the pacing to a halt. I felt crushed. :( I don't have a lot of free time for RPGs anymore and decided to give up & move on to something else. A friend of mine finished his, though, and ended up liking it enough to go for the extras.
I didn't mind using the flute on the invisible enemies. I thought it was one of the few things that changed the feel of combat. What I did mind is the final overly long story dungeon... WITH ONE FUCKING SAVE POINT! There could have been more, but it's a seriously long time between saves against some seriously hardass enemies. I didn't bother with the bonus dungeon. I was burned out.
I picked this up at the Amazon sale too, but haven't ripped the hymen on it just yet and won't with DQ5 on the horizon.
Impressions don't sound good, but for $18, I thought why the fuck not?
I was gonna go day 1 on SO4, but this game and the twist 3 had will have me reading impressions and reviews before I pick it up.

Well that was the games final 'Fuck YOU!' to me. There IS only ONE save point. And I made it to floor 5 of the dungeon, after having beat 3 bosses, and then died on a group of enemies and then had to reload to the beginning of it all. I checked Gamefaqs and it looks like the last dungeon is 10 levels long, with boss fights on every other floor and only one save point on floor 11. Fuck that.Quote:

I'm just going to grind like hell I guess. There's a creation trick where you can earn over 400k Fol, so it's best to just stock up on a shitload of Miraculous Medicines for that last dungeon.

Got it for $10 on Sunday. I'm really enjoying this so far, although odds of completion are slim at best. The basic systems are nice and simple and it layers on details at a decent rate. There's no way, though, that I'm talking to every person in every town with every character. I don't care how much I miss, that's just a recipe for grade-A crazy.
I didn't actually mind the first two hours. The chase scene wasn't much of a chase, seeing as the ogre couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I dodged him and smacked all the enemies on the way up the stairs with very little loss of health. The stealth section was only stealthy if you wanted it to be, which I didn't. Enemies are for hitting. As for the escort mission, I let the party run ahead and take care of everything, so it's not like I had to do much more than let them earn experience for me. I don't get the hate for the beginning at all.
The voice acting and mouth movements are amazingly bad, though. I thought Square had localization teams nowadays.

There's no point in talking to most people. The game usually clues you into what you need to do, and there's hardly any side quests. Maybe like a half dozen. You'll probably give up on the final dungeon if you get that far. It's a fucking murderhouse with only a single save point and long stretches of boss-like fights. Bonus dungeon is lame and not worth it.
Also got it for $10 at BB. Still playing more Last Remnant but I like what I've seen so far. VO and character animation suck ass but the combat is pretty fun. I'm getting bummed out that so many JRPGs that try the realtime combat/encounters get snubbed by RPG elitists. Westerners hate them for the trite, cliched story. Westerners who want to be Japanese hate them for the realtime mechanics. I dunno what the Japanese think...
Anyway, fun times. I really like the artwork in the instruction book - anyone know if an art book came out for it?
I have played this (gamefly!!) and I find the loading times unacceptable. Also the battles TAKE FOREVER. Seriously. There is no "short regular mob battle" in this game. EVERYTHING takes so long.

Er... what? Battles are quick and zippy. A few hits and down they go, especially when you've set battle to Combo. The only stupidly long ones I've found so far are aerial ones, where the allies haven't the slightest idea how to hit something in the air. And it's a pretty load-free experience, other than wandering between field and town. Are you sure you're thinking of Infinite Undiscovery?

Load times aren't bad at all. Really is a fun little average game for 20 hours. I actually wish more RPGs would cut their length down a bit (I'm looking at you persona!!!)
There are enough short games out there that a few long winded ones are a welcome reprise every now and then.
I love persona knowing that I will be getting a ridiculous amount of playtime for a low low price.

3 deleted save files, 4 restarts, 4 bent discs, 2 torn OSGs, and nearly 7 months later, I am proud to say I finally reached stomached through to the end. I am not sure if I've ever played a game like IU that has conjured up so much love and rage from me simultaneously.
The weird part is that while I stand by my earlier criticisms, correcting an error (you can play your flute with sword drawn while 'disconnected' in battle) and exploiting horseshoe synthesis (for easy access to cash) were enough to make a difference between now (attempt #4) and last fall (#1). I hope Tri-Ace follows up with a sequel correcting the control issues.
Now that I think about it, IU just might have my favorite couple in all of gaming. Capell's "I don't know why I'm doing this" was the perfect foil for Aya's "Shut up and keep moving." In an unintentional way, IU made me identify with Capell.
I wanted to smash his face in the whole game, but then, that's how most "OMG, I'm the hero?" JRPG main characters make me feel.
Hey, if they didn't always start out with amnesia, they wouldn't be surprised to be the hero.
Started this up last night. Got a couple hours in. One of the worst JRPGs I've ever played.
