Help me build a PC
Okay, here's what I know I need:
-case
-motherboard
-HDD
-CDRW (or a a CDR)
-AGP graphics card
-PCI Ethernet card
-IDE cable
-Processor
-Heat sink fan for processor
-Fan for case (case I found comes with it - YAY)
Things I know about but don't know if they're vital
-Fan for graphics card
-Fan for HDD, CDRW, and such
Am I missing anything? Plus, are there any reccomendations on what brand stuff to get? I think I'll grab a ECS mobo for sure, AMD for a processor, and ATI for graphics, but I'm up for suggestions on the rest. I did some mock pricing at www.newegg.com and did a decent setup for 500 bucks, but I need to know if there's any components I MUST have and I don't know about.

case: Antec makes some very solid cases, look for an SX830.
mobo: The ECS K7S5A is a great deal, with built-in sound and ethernet.
cdrw: Plextor makes the best CDRW drives, however LITEON offers some great deals as well.
video: A GeForce3 TI 200 gives a great bang for the buck.
cpu: Athlon XP is the way to go, 1400MHZ should be enough.
ram: Go with Micron on this, and make sure it's DDR. 256MB should be enough.
hdd: I'm not too sure about this one, but I really like the 120GXP IBM models.
floppy: Any old thing will do.
As for cooling, video cards will already have fans and you don't really need them for the HDD and whatnot. The SX830 case includes two fans on the back, and two mounts in the front for more if you like. Ontop of that you've got the fan in the power supply. If you're building the computer yourself, take very good care when mounting the heatsink & fan on the CPU.
If you haven't already chosen a retailer, may I suggest NCIX? They've got a large selection, and some bitchin' prices. They'd be my first choice.

Thankee. This will be my first time building a PC, so I hope to do everything right, but can't garuntee (sp) it. How difficult is it to get the heatsink and fan properly put in?
edit: does NCIX have any distributors in the US? I'd hate to think what shipping would go for otherwise... =p

You'll likely be better off having someone build it for you, I think NCIX does it for free. Getting a HSF on can be tricky, especially with the thermal paste and whatnot. You don't really want to screwup and destroy the computer.
I don't know what kind of system NCIX has in place for US customers, but you should be fine. Go build a system on their site, and get the numbers from there I guess.

CPU: Athlon 2000 XP (1.7 GHz processor that compares favorably to a 2 GHz P4)
Graphic Card: GeForce 3Ti
RAM: 512 MB
A good place to deal with is The Computer Factory . I've gone to their store in my area, and they took care of any questions I had.

try getting your ram from www.crucial.com
cheap/decent prices.
-
do checkout www.pricewatch.com it'll list the cheapest prices for everything computer related and link you to the online store.
-
you may also want to try www.ibuyer.net i think it is they are a bit more tight on retailers then pricewatch is

A 256MB stick of Micron DDR will run you 45$US, the SDRAM stick however comes in at 49$. DDR is faster, and no more expensive, make sure you get it.
