Scanners (and printers)

I'm looking for a good solid scanner. My objectives are a) scan in H.W. problems and mail them to classmates and TAs, and B) scan my extensive collection of 1940's electronics papers. If there is some sort of package deal out there with a book page scanner, that would be nice too. I'd like to back up some of my old books. I have a few from the 1800s.

It would be nice to get something that can handle colors very well as I also have a few home decorating books that I'd like to back up and put online. One in particular dates from the 60/70s. The furniture layouts look just like the layouts in many of today’s cartoons.


So, does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking of going shopping tomorrow with my day off.

so about those scanners

I have a HP All in One. I think the model is a PSC-1315..or something like that. I bought it for $100 about a year ago.

what quality are the scans?

I had a $90 Canon scanner, and for the price, it was very very impressive. I don't know the resolution/etc specs offhand, but it was a lot better than most of the other sub-$100 scanners I had used before. I've never been a fan of all-in-ones are you can usually get higher-quality stuff separately (assuming you can deal with losing twice the space). I also have a Canon printer (Pixma i500 or something) and it's amazing. Does really, really great 4x6 prints (borderless as well) and it has separate tanks for each color and then photo black and text black. Saves me a shitload of money since it distinguishes which black to print (the cheap text, or the high-quality photo ink). You can swap the color tanks for cheap color tanks, too, for just graphs and crap if you don't print photos. Got it on sale for being an open-box, $120 or something.

For the most part, if you're not a graphic designer it's not going to matter too much which scanner you get. Graphics people seem to swear by Epson scanners, but most people wouldn't notice the difference between a $50 scanner and a $400 scanner. Hell, a $50 scanner can still do 4800x3200 resolution, and that's more than any printer can really print (no matter if the box DOES say it's 1 billion DPI.)

The one issue you may have is if some of the old books have pages that are larger than an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. You would need to buy an expensive commercial scanner to do any larger than that.

I know I need something better than those package in deals that they sell with back to school computers.

i've tried the ones my friends have and they are really shitty for small schematics.
