gay marriage

now I know what you are thinking, we've talked about this before.

This thread isn't about if gay marriage is right or wrong. It is about the history of the issue.

From my perspective, it looks like the debate was constructed by the right to distract the public. Before the last election it was nonissue in my state.

But my experience may not be the same as others. I want to know how this shit went down for everyone else.

Was there some epic battle from gay people for the right to marriage? Were they really asking for civil unions? Did the right use the word "marriage" to get an emotional reaction and keep gay people from getting what they wanted?

What is the truth?

I don't get it. Gay marriage has been an issue for a long time. It's not like it all began when Bush entered office. Seriously, I don't understand what you're asking. But to answer your question, god hates fags.

It doesn't matter what 'the truth' is. It matters that this has to even be fucking discussed. I can't believe this is even a question. Two people who love each other should be able to have their union recognized by everyone. Anyone who thinks otherwise is hiding behind a bigot of a god. Even if you don't believe in god, the only reason people have any problem with this idea amounts to insecurities christians have forced into the public arena. You are being swayed by other peoples ideologies and not your own. Do people really have to be so hateful as to try and undignify everything about a person because they're gay?

The, "I'm not against gays, I'm against gay marriage" argument makes so little sense it's absurd. Do you have any idea what that says to a gay person? It says: "You should be ashamed of what you are."

Gay people being allowed the same rights as everyone else would affect anyone who isn't gay zero.

This is the same shit that happened during segregation through to acceptance (but keep flying that flag south, :tu:). If you're against this idea you might as well call yourself a nigger-hater, because it amounts to the same thing.

it matters for this thread. We've already had two or three 30 page threads about this.

I want to know if this issue was used as a distraction during the last election or if it was a real issue that people wanted addressed at that time. I'm thinking the former becuase nothing has been said or done about it since the last ellection.
