October Horror/Scary Movie Thread

It's October, and Halloween will be here soon. I'm pretty excited about Halloween this year, and I want to get into the spirit by freaking myself out. I want to watch a scary movie every night this month, but I know very little about horror movies.

So the purpose of this thread is for suggestions/comments/critiques of any and all movies that are best enjoyed this time of year.

I'm doing an article for the paper about movies to watch on Halloween or in October, this is what I came up with (suggestions for thigns to add/change are welcome btw):

Basically the article will be that list with banter about each movie, I'll post it when I write it if interested.

Stir of Echoes is ok. Because its suprisingly not terrible rather than being genuinely good it tends to be overrated by some, much like the House of Wax remake (which is well worth watching once).

For the sake of keeping the article of reasonable length, I opted for Zombi 2 over The Dead series, just because Zombi 2 has naked shark fighting zombie titty action, and the Romero movies don't.

Rosemary's Baby and Eyes Without a Face are the freakiest movies I've seen. Other horror movies are usually too fun to be scary.

Gotta throw in the Original "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." Its probably the scariest movie ever, to me. The first time I watched it, I had to return the video tape to the store immediately because I felt dirty having it in my house.

Indeed. In terms of atmosphere and scariness, Final Chapter is tops. Jason Lives is just an all around fun little slasher, nothing I'd call scary.

Part 2 isn't bad either. 3 was so bad it was funny (Meat Powered Batteries!) but I haven't getten around to seeing 4 or 5 yet.

I'm not very fond of modern horror flics. They draw too much from jap horror flics, which I can't stand they are generally far more slow and plodding than anything else. And all of them seem to be going the mind fuck route rather than trying to be scary.

But I love the 70s and 80s stuff back when america could make a damn good horror flic (well and lots of bad ones but still). I recently picked up baby blood, of course I got the shitty U.S VHS release for a couple of bucks rather than springing the 25$ europe re-release. It's the strangest killer baby movie out there, and I should know I've seen them all. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, it made close to no sense but hey it was gory and a bit unsettling. Yanca (fuck if I know the actresses name) would even be pretty hot if she didn't have a gap in her teeth you could drive a semi through. The most comical thing about it is that Yanca is just covered in blood for like half the film and nobody ever says anything about it.

Yeah I agree Arjue. Stir of Echoes was an alright movie. It was well made, but I felt that it was fairly predictable.

I would say VI is the most fun of the movies, it is a pretty good combination of the more serious toned early movies with the downright silly later ones.

Dead Alive:The zombie baby beating is one of the greatest moments in cinema.

I don't remember if it was mentioned, but Cabin Fever is great, and can be had for like $6 at Circuit City. Also, Frailty. It's more of a thriller than horror flick, but one of my favorite movies period.

Fuck yeah, Cabin Fever ftw.

Rosemary's Baby is fucking ace too.

and 13 ghosts is terrible.

How could I leave Phantasm off of my list? Hell, the whole series is good.

Really? I always thought the Phantasms were awfully overrated. It's not very gory, and it doesn't have much of a story.

Hmm...

- The Frightners- Pretty fun ghost movie.
- Dead Alive- Worth mentioning again, just because the lawn mower scene is a work of art.
- Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man)- One of the more unusual zombie movies I've seen. Recommend giving it a look and it finally received a proper DVD release here in the states a few months ago.
- Undead- Everything I've heard...it's a very love it or hate it type of movie. But it has zombie fish (which is not nearly as fullfilling as it should sound).
-Dumpster Baby- Haven't seen it, but from what I've been hearing it has a good ability to be a decent lowbudget movie and leave you feeling rather dirty.
-The Brood- Haven't seen it in years, but those little killer people still creep me out.
-Frailty- Seconded.
- Near Dark- Was released around the same time as The Lost Boys. IMO this is the better movie.
- May- If you can't find a friend... make one....sounds about right.
- Toolbox Murders- Directed by Tobe Hooper. Actually pretty good. Decent gore too, which is always a plus.
- The Last Horror Movie- Similar to Man Bites Dog in that it follows a part time serial killer as he goes about his dealings.
- Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter- Because everyone should harvest more lesbians.

Of all of Argento's movies, I would say this is his worst. You should try and pick up Opera, or Susperia.

Yeah, Phenomena was not very good. I mean, what the hell, she talks to insects? OK... Although, there was some good gore, and the soundtrack kicks ass. I heard some Motorhead and some Iron Maiden in there. Besides that, meh. I'll take your word Arjue and look for Opera and Susperia.

I think Arjue mentioned it, but Wolf Creek was fantastic. There's some real desperation in some of the acting and the hopelessness is well done.

I also picked up 28 Days Later and have some crap like the RE movies and The Grudge as well. I'll be picking up quite a bit more as the month goes on as horror has become my new favorite genre.

I've always wanted to see Chopping Mall and Jacob's Ladder, they are on my Netflix for this month

Speaking of Scanners, pretty much any Cronenberg movie is good, albeit not always strictly horror.

Besides the head exploding, Scanners is kind of crappy. Well, the last battle is kind of fun in a silly way.

I also didn't realize that Chopping Mall was a Roger Corman movie.

I just heard about this new horror movie called Rest Stop while browsing upcominghorrormovies.com. Looks descent and John Shiban (X-files, Supernatural) directed it. Low-budget ($5 million) so shouldnt be to flashy :)

And I also saw John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness... pretty underrated I think, sure it's uneven and kind of corny, but there are a lot of parts in it that work rather well I think. The dream messages from the future really creeped me out for some reason.

That's a great movie, asian guy was pretty funny even if he was one of those go nowhere actors.

Here's the article I wrote on this subject for my school paper. The writing is eh, but the movies are good picks:

- An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Directed by John Landis
Starring: David Naughton, Jenny Agutter, Griffen Dunne
One of the best examples of a funny horror movie, An American Werewolf in London has everything you could want out of a movie about werewolves: superstitious Englishmen, sex, a soundtrack filled with songs with the word “moon” in it, stark gore, and the absolute most bitching transformation sequence ever put to film. Don’t confuse this with the super-crappy late 90s sequel An American Werewolf in Paris, however, because, well, it’s super crappy and should have never been made.

- The Evil Dead (1981)
Directed by Sam Raimi
Starring: Bruce Campbell
The undisputed king of cult horror movies, Sam “Spider-Man” Raimi’s first feature length film is a testament to what can be done with a tight budget and youthful ingenuity. It also marks the first movie for B-Movie icon Bruce Campbell in his most beloved role of Ash, the chainsaw handed, deadite killing, smooth talking king of splatter. While the film spawned two equally entertaining sequels (Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness) the first film is the most straight-forward horror film that is as schlocky as it is clever. It also has a woman being raped by trees, which is noticably absent from the film’s sequels. If you want a little bit of a lighter film with more one-liners and silly splatter, by all means check out the sequels as well.

- Frenzy (1972)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Starring Jon Finch, Barry Foster, Anna Massey
I was tempted to recommend Psycho but that just seemed too easy and most everyone has seen it anyway, so that brings me to Frenzy. By far Hitch’s most underrated film and the only one to receive an R rating, Frenzy is downright brutal. An example: the film opens with a long shot of the Thames River in London, eventually zooming to the bloated, naked corpse of a woman who has been strangled by a neck tie, intrigue ensues. But, despite being one Hitchcock’s darker films, it still retains a line of black comedy throughout making it perfect for Halloween.

- Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
Directed by Tom McLoughlin
Starring: Thom Mathews, Jennifer Cooke, C.J. Graham
Okay, so the last few Friday the 13th movies have been either too goofy or simply too horrible to watch, that doesn’t mean the entire series should be written off. Jason Lives marks the first time that Jason comes back from the grave as a badass hulking zombie who wants to kill everyone for no real reason. This installment also offers the best balance between the cornball latter half of the series and the trying-too-hard-to-be-legit first half. That and seeing Ron Palillo (Horshack from “Welcome Back, Kotter”) get punched through the chest in the opening scene makes it well worth the time.

- Halloween (1978)
- Directed by John Carpenter
- Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence
Perhaps too obvious of a choice to even mention, this 1978 horror staple seems to be written off because of its seven hokey sequels. Michael Myers makes his debut here tormenting a small New England suburb which manages to be incredibly creepy without showing too much violence on screen. In terms of gore, the film is tame, but try sleeping at night while listening to John Carpenter’s memorable score. If you can then I recommend that you seek therapy.

- “Halloweenie” – The Adventures of Pete and Pete Season 2 (1994)
Directed by Peter Lauer
Starring Michael C. Maronna, Danny Tamberelli, Rick Gomez
“The Adventures of Pete and Pete” goes beyond simple “Hey, I watched this when I was nine” nostalgia because when watching it as an adult you see that the show is actually exceptionally witty, wistful, and, above all, smart. The episode “Halloweenie” captures what it is to be a kid on Halloween. It features everything: the pranks, the decorations, the excitement, the sense of tradition, the bullies, the costumes, and the ambition to get as much candy in a four hour span as humanly possible. Oh and Iggy Pop in a cardigan, always a plus. Use this as a buffer between gore fests, it guarantees to conjure a smile.

- ‘Manos’: The Hands of Fate (1966)
- Directed by Hal Warren
- Starring: You know? It really doesn’t matter.
I recommend this film not because it’s gory or scary (it’s neither) but because it is, by far, the worst movie ever put to film. No plot, horrid acting, and completely inept from a technical stand point, Manos offers viewers the chance to see the type of film that Satan forces people to watch in Hell. If you aren’t feeling up to the challenge of watching this abortion of a film without help, pick up the “Mystery Science Theater 3000” episode which features the film, it softens the blow and makes for a fun look at what happens when a fertilizer salesman from El Paso tries to make a horror movie (Seriously).

- Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Directed by Dan O’Bannon
Starring Burt Wilson, Don Calfa, Thom Mathews
In simple terms, Return of the Living Dead is awesome. I don’t mean that in a “Hey, this cheeseburger is awesome” sense, I mean that in a “Holy crap, this is the most decadent, cornball, over-the-top, sexual, violent, funny, stupid, campy, brain eating, zombie trashing, city destroying, hair metal soundtracked movie ever made, ever.” I’m not sure of the exact point that I realized how awesome this movie was, it was either when a zombie named “tar man” yells “Brains!” and eats the skull of a leathered out punk named Suicide and then looks at the other humans and yells “More brains!” Or when a girl pointlessly rips off her clothes and dances around a graveyard naked right before the big acid rain storm that wakes up all of the dead people who, of course, rip her apart.

- Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Directed by Edgar Wright
Starring: Simon Pegg, Kate Ashfield, Nick Frost
Zombies and English people. Shaun of the Dead is the ultimate horror movie for people who hate horror movies. While extraordinarily funny, the film does not slack in terms of suspense and gore, especially near the end when there is a rather stark turn towards the dark. Regardless, the film has zombies being killed by flying, meticulously picked records, cricket bats and pool cues while listening to Queen. Hands down, the best horror satire ever made.

- Suspiria (1977)
Directed by Dario Argento
Starring:
One wouldn’t think that a movie which takes place in a ballet school would feature one of the most brutal and gruesome murder scenes ever put to film within the first ten minutes. While the actual number of people killed in the movie is fairly low, when it does happen the movie punches the viewer in the face with truely horrid images. Couple that with an incredibly bizarre haunted house-like soundtrack and you have a great reason to mistrust every Italian ballet instructor you come across.

- The Thing (1982)
- Directed by John Carpenter
- Starring: Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David
Picture this. You’re in Antarctica with ten of your friends and then some Norwegian guys come barreling through your camp shooting at a dog that eventually turns into a flower-like mound of flesh and teeth and then absorbs and replicates one of your friends. You don’t know who is and isn’t one of these things and nobody believes you when you say that you aren’t one. What should you do? Well, judging by the characters’ reactions in The Thing you should huddle into a corner with a flame thrower and threaten anything that moves. Incredibly creepy and gory, this remake of the Howard Hawks classic will have you distrusting your friends for weeks. “No I don’t want to go to D-Hall with you, you shape-shifting alien bastard!”

- Zombie (Zombi 2) (1979)
- Directed by Lucio Fulci
- Starring: Tisa Farrow, Ian McCulloch, Richard Johnson
This film contains the single greatest moment in film history which answers the age old question: who would win in an underwater fight between a scuba diving topless woman, a zombie and a shark? Besides that cinematic gem, the film supplies a healthy amount of zombie gore and also has a disturbing scene involving a woman’s eye and a large, jagged piece of wood. This one isn’t for the weak stomached.

whatever happened to the Damnation Game...I remember it was suppose to go in production a couple of years ago.

Watched the silent earth last night, not a bad flic but very 80s and very Ausie. starts off slow but gets better, but it's a lot like every post end of the world movie ever, too many cock shots too.

I remember watching "Manos the hands of fate" through MST3000 years back and it was sadly the worst film you could ever subject youself to.

A man could end any relationship with that thing.

Agreed. I was forced to watch it in its entirety thanks to my brother. He also subjected me to "Blood Freak", which should put everyone in a good Thanksgiving holiday mood. It is supposed to be scary I think. Just tell me someone has seen this movie.

Dude, I thought I was the only one! One of my all-time favorites.

Anyways, I see most of the bases are covered except for stuff from before the late '70s, which is horrors finest hour imo. So I won't list dupes, but here are some of my picks:

The Last Man On Earth: starring Vincent Price and based on Richard Matheson's classic I Am Legend, awesome film.

The Brain That Wouldn't Die: Highly entertaining and really pushes the gore envelope for its time. Also, two strippers get into a fight and you hear a "meow" sound effect.

The Call of Cthulhu: I doubt you'll find this anywhere but the interweb. Only a few years old, but a silent film, absolutely excellent in every way. I can't recommend this enough.

Horror Hospital: possibly the funniest (unintentionally) movie I've ever seen.

Rawhead Rex: Terrible film based on the Clive Barker story of the same name. Has a golden shower.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: this old silent film starring John Barrymore is awesome.

this movie is still sitting in my "to watch" pile. i only get to the part where the girl falls trough the skylight everytime before the colors make me want to stab out my eyes.

Yeah the colors in that movie are really rich. I like it.

Alot of his movies are very rich visually, almost to the point where its overwhelming.

I watched the original Friday 13th and Children of the Corn this week.

suspiria's one of the best horror movies i've seen. argento is a master of suspense.

texas chainsaw massacre is a classic. i just watched the remake (thank god for cheap horror movies in october! woohoo!!) and it didn't suck.

also, i recently watched the masters of horror episode "imprint" (directed by takashi miike), and that was good. if you like "ichi the killer" or "audition," you'll enjoy "imprint." it's really brutal, and it's rather complex with the way it twists fantasy and reality.

I'm about to watch Nosferatu and eat pizza. It will be a good day.

I've said this countless times before but homosexuals LOVE Dario Argento (possibly even more than they love cock).

One recent movie to check out would be the film Rest Stop. I've been a bit disappointed with a lot of the modern horror films just because they lack that gritty minimalistic edge of the classic horror films. The movie Rest Stop is good at capturing that dark and gritty tone though with a psychopathic killer to boot.

i actually noticed this movie in best buy yesterday and was wondering if it was any good, 'cause it looked cool. i just wish it was cheaper than $20 :(

Can anyone tell me how gory/violent Near Dark is?

Fairly gory and violent, it's a proper vampire flick. Why?

Trying to find introductory horror/monster flicks that aren't going to traumatize the date, who doesn't enjoy them but is being forced to watch a bunch with me - 'tis the season.

We've done It's Alive, Retardead (watched this with a group who insisted on it - UGH), Lo, Dreams in the Witch House (Masters of Horror episode) and Black Sabbath (American version.) All of which she's been fine with and some of which she genuinely enjoyed. Of the list we've both liked Black Sabbath the most.

It's hard guessing at violence levels for movies I haven't already seen but I want to watch new (to me) flicks.

The point of a good horror flick is to traumatize.

Go watch Álex de la Iglesia's The Baby's Room. It's on Netflix.

Rest Stop is crap from what I recall, I'll be back with my list in a bit.

Wait this thread is hella old. I highly suggest Korean and Japanese Horror, too many to list. I just bought Let me in, both versions. I thought the Sixth Sense was scary, and the Ring. A lot of what you guys are listing are Mainstream pop Horror, no biggie. I will have to dig through my collection but of what has been listed Fraility is a must see.

Near Dark is fucking awesome. I was lucky enough to catch it on the big screen earlier this year, it was such a blast.

For some good horror that isn't gonna rape her face, i'd go with Poultergeist. Its pretty much a kids movie but its a great movie and a good introduction to the genre. Then i'd work my way into the mainstream 80's stuff like nightmare on elm street or friday 13th part 3 then choose from there depending on her preferences.

Thanks. I ended up watching Near Dark with some friends and not the date. Really enjoyed it. Don't think it would've been too violent for her. I've never seen Poltergeist so that'd be fun to check out.

It's really weird the aversion some people have against horror movies. One of the friends I watched Near Dark with spent the entire thing behind a pillow because I said it was a movie I had rented for Halloween. She didn't trust me when I assured her I had rented it because a source had said it was a good, but not at all terrifying movie. So, because she got herself all riled up she spent the entire time scared even though there wasn't a single "jump" in the movie.

Meanwhile, I've known other people who don't like horror movies because they don't find them in the least scary. So they'll watch a horror flick eye rolling the entire time about how un-phased they are, or how fake the gore is.

Point being it's all your attitude and mind set about how scared something is going to make you. But neither of those two cases, in my experience, will open up their mind to letting something affect them differently.
