The first two cars I bought (used) came with radar detectors. I was always afraid that if I did get pulled over, a cop would be less lenient if he saw the radar so I took them out in both cars. Anyone know if my fears were warranted?
Dunno about the quality of either (never did any research into them), but the first car's radar detector seemed to always be picking up some signal and just made me paranoid.
On the subject, what speeds do you guys usually drive on the freeway? I usually stick to 70-75 (in 65 limit zones), though if I'm on a long trip I'll make my way to 80. Might've ventured to 90-100 last weekend when driving up from southern California, but that was in a 70 zone and for some reason that extra 5 MPH in the limit seems to make a world of difference in how fast I'll drive without fear of being pulled over.
The speed limit here is 70, so I typically go 75. I'll creep up to 80 here and there. I know of a lot of people who have gotten tickets and none of them have been for 70-75; it seems like the cops ignore up to 75.
I'm also lucky to have friends who have lived their entire lives in this state and they can tell me exactly where all the major speed traps are, which towns to never speed in, etc etc.
Usually on the freeways I drive at around 80. My car is black on black on black on black so it's pretty invisible, I guess (no tickets yet--knock on wood). These are mostly unfamiliar roads, though. If I was going on a trip, I would tone it down to about 70-75, both for the sake of avoiding tickets and getting better mileage. In 6th gear, 70 gets me about 3000 RPM; 80 gets me about 3500.
In sixth gear at 60 MPH, I'm doing 1500 RPM. At 80 MPH, I'm doing about 2500 RPM. That LS2 is too rad.
It's amazing what kind of mileage you can get with that 400 hp V8.
speaking of mileage my lil bike got me 56mpg today :)
I'm not gonna spam this thread with motorcycle stuff because it's off topic. But I'll just say today I went for my first real ride. We rode 170 miles total, from here to Pittsburgh and back. And it was a complete blast. I f'ing loved it. If you like vehicles and speed and asphalt and all that stuff, definitely consider getting a bike!
Argh, I wrecked my Miata over the weekend.
I was at the Deals Gap Rotary rally in the mountains near the Tennessee/NC state line, and I RAN OFF THE MOUNTAIN ROAD. Luckily, I ran off the left side, if I had gone off the other side I would have gone over the edge of the mountain to my certain death.
Then, I had to manage to get the car towed back here to the middle of NC from the other side of the mountains on the Tennessee side. Fun, fun.
The damage isn't that severe, it should only take me a few hundred dollars (that I don't have, argh) to get it back on the road, but it needs some body work to make it purdy again.
