There is one in the local car club, A Wagon, SBC, 383 stroked, ~550hp to the wheels. Its really odd hearing that engine note from a freaking Volvo.

There is also the Northstar swapped Fiero, a Chrysler 5.9 magnum in a Jag XJS, and the Mint Ford Pinto with a Ford 2.3 Turbo from a T-Bird in it, and my Buddy Jay's 81' Malibu classic wagon with a fuel injected 350 from a Iroc-Z and a Tremec T-56 in it. As well as a mint Delorean, A Bricklin SV-1 and a Detomaso Pantera.

I need to get some pics the next cruise night....

ugh. It's soooo generic. It looks like a Ford Focus, and that's really not a good thing at all. The Impreza used to just demand attention now it's trying to slip into the crowd unnoticed.

Yeah much less hideous than the earlier pics, but it does look like the bastard offspring of a Mazda 3 and a Ford Focus.

I did a hardwire install from the inside fuse box. Wires are routed behind the dash, A pillar, and headliner to keep everything clean. I currently have the detector just above the rear view mirror on a windshield mount, but I'm going to play with other options. I'd like to get it hidden on the passenger side visor eventually so I don't have to worry about it getting stolen. I need to find a visor mount cd holder big enough for me to sandwich the detector between it and the visor. That way only the display sticks out and display off = can't be spotted.

I wrote the following impressions for another site I post at. Figured people here might be interested too.

I chose the STi Driver based on a couple things.

1. It does very well in testing done by Guys of Lidar, and has a great reputation on radardetectors.net. It had some very good results on POP tests specifically. It is one of the "big three" detectors with some of the best performance available today.
2. I don't live in an area where radar detectors are illegal, but who knows what the future brings. I like the idea of being stealth. Laws can change, or if PDs buy Spectre regardless of legality they will not have reason to hassle me.
3. It also comes with some of the extra accessories I would have had to buy on top of the other detectors anyway, like the hardwire kit, travel case, and regular smart cord for use in other vehicles. This helps justify the premium somewhat, although it does suck getting stuck with that useless external speaker.
4. I think it looks the best of the current detectors. The black magnesium case is really slick and the thing just feels solid. The V1 on the other hand looks like an 80s reject. Maybe Aesthetics are a dumb reason to pick one detector over another, but performance being about equal I just like the modern-ness of the STi.
5. I live in the city and didn't want to deal with the alleged falsing of the V1. The Bel and Escort detectors supposedly have better filtering.

I borrowed a friend's V1 this last week to compare and they performed very similar. I didn't really notice any increased falsing with the V1, they both go off a good deal around town. I did find that I love the automute feature on my Sti, it lowers the volume on falses right away. I didn't read the manual of the V1 so I'm not sure if it has a similar feature. When running them together they would alert at almost the same time. Sometimes one would alert a second before the other, but neither was consistently alerting first.

I really liked the arrows on the V1, but for everything else I preferred the STi. I am still running the V1 to see what else i can learn (my testing has been by no means thorough). I have no reservations recommending an STi to others, or a V1 for that matter. They are both great detectors and choosing is just personal preference and what works best for where you live.

Radar detectors just make me paranoid >_< I'd rather speed in blissful ignorance.

I only ever speed on highways and rarely enough that I'd get pulled over anyway. A detector would be nice on long highway drives (the only time I really ever venture past 75), but that's about it. Still no speeding tickets, though :) You guys bold enough to announce your ticket count?

I have a total of 4 speeding tickets technically, from 3 stops. All were for 5 MPH over the speed limit. In my younger (stupid) days I would routinely do 100+, never had a problem. On the most recent stop, the guy gave me two citations for speeding, and two for reckless endangerment with the willful intent to destroy property. Yeah, I pissed that guy off. Luckily, the DA thought it was funny that I pissed off the cop and I was able to plea to simple speeding.

I also have had a couple of tickets for running with expired tags or inspection, and one for no insurance. The expired stuff was usually me being absent-minded (I tend to forget these things) and the no insurance was when I was in college and had an insurance bill that cost more than what I made in my crummy part time job in a month.

It has some decent pep for being a 4 banger.

I only have one ticket recently. I was out in the tiny goldrush towns inland in CA. The backroads were awesome there, curvy and hilly with no other cars, just woods on the side of the road. A cop got me when he was driving from the other direction over a crest in the hill. The speedlimit on the road was 35, which was BS, the road was perfectly safe at 45. I was going 45 or 50, he wrote me up for 40. Little country towns are so annoying with all the speeding tickets.

That was in my old car so I figure it will get worse now. Plus I usually drive 80 on the freeway, and on the long drive to LA I cruise at 95 in some parts. Never had a problem but the detector will pay for itself with one big ticket. After driving with it for a month I feel really vulnerable without it. I will probably always have one on my from now on. You should grab a detector Mark. You must get the urge to lay into that LS2 now and then, it could save your ass.
