I got a speeding ticket from a park ranger, once.
My roommate James and I were driving back to San Diego from Arizona. We're on the I-40 and there is nothing around but dirt and more dirt. We come up on this truck that has lights on top. I slow down and can see that its a park ranger. James and I dicuss this for a minute, and decide to pass him on up, thinking that he has no jurisdiction. Ten seconds after passing (slowly) the ranger's lights are on and I'm pulling over.
Turns out that part of the 40 is a fucking national park.
Its a goddamn desert National Park.
The ticket was $150 and I paid it two months later. If I had gotten pulled over by CHP, I would have easily been fined in excess of $300. So I got off lucky on that one. But fuck.
Lesson summed up: dont speed by park rangers.
I'm slowly but surely becoming a lil mechanic on my bike. I've not taken it to the shop for anything, doing everything myself. I've never even changed oil on a car, just too much of a pain in the ass if you live in your typical apartment complex. Changing oil on a bike is cake.
Changing spark plugs, brake fluid, valve adjustments, suspension oil, replacing tires, brake pads... It's all just right there out in the open on a bike. I've always been interested in this kind of stuff, just never quite had the space or money to really do it. Granted most of that stuff I've not done yet (no need yet), but I will when the time comes, it's all pretty straightforward.
It's pretty sick that places like Jiffy Lube charge like $25+ for an oil change when it's literally a few dollars worth of oil and that's it, WalMart recycles old oil for free to boot. Maybe $6 or so for a filter.
I'd love to transfer this knowledge I'm gaining to my car, but I just don't see that happening anytime soon. Oh well, still fun.
Torgo, I guess that means your hand is feeling better?
Yeah it healed pretty fast. This is all I have left:
healed hand
and here is the day of the crash
day of wreck hand
I know the pic makes it look not that big of a deal, but holy fuck did it hurt. Just taking off my shirt was incredible pain.
It's like 99% usable. My tendons are still healing and they hurt on occasion, mostly if I try to pick up something heavy. But overall I'm doing fine. I've put 1100 miles on my new bike with it.
It was your Miata that went down at the Gap, no? How's that coming? My friend and I are seriously considering heading out there this summer. But we've heard weekends at the gap have just gotten retarded, so we might go somewhere else.
Weekends are retarded there now, but if you can go during the week it's great.
Mechanically, the Miata is fine now. Shockingly, all it needed was a lower control arm, a turn signal, and a new wheel (I left the old one at the wrecker.) There's a guy that parts out wrecked Miatas near here that sold me all the parts I needed for 80 bucks, plus I had to pay 12 bucks to get some new bolts from the dealer. Not bad.
It still needs a new fender and bumper, but I've banged it back into almost the right shape. The car's not pretty, but it's running well and ready to terrorize C-Stock again.
It pays to know about vehicles. I wouldn't have known to find the parts for 80 bucks in a situation like that, I would have let the body shop rape me :)
Just like the bike I totaled. At first they weren't going to total it and repair it. All the damage was cosmetic (just the fairing). If I had known then what I know now, I would have pocketed that check and made my bike into a streetfighter (basically a naked bike, done right they look really badass) or found a used fairing myself for half the cost.
And now I also know people put frame sliders on their bikes (little "pegs" that stick out and protect the bike in minor crashes), wear full gear, and in minor wrecks like mine typically end up with maybe a broken blinker or something like that. Just get up and keep riding...
Live and learn...
That is fucking awesome. I've been trying so hard to find a bat symbol for my car.
I knew about all the Holdens and the Ford Falcon, but even Toyota makes an awesome looking supersedan for Australia! Life is not fair. It has a supercharged v6 with 320 horsepower.
