A few questions to help pin it down some. Whats the fuse labeled? What engine? Northstar? LS or LT series? What makes you think its actually 4 cylinders? Or is it just really down on power? Does it cause a "check engine" light ?

Didn't know methanol can help hold an engine together during high boost, Interesting.
Yeah I hear ya on the dirt cheap core. My wife loves Fox bodies so one day I'll have the choice of after market 302 that's built like a brick shit house for like 1500 or buy shit box stock block after shit box stock block from junk yards.
Then again there's a lot of old guy muscle car fanatics who have told me that it's like 99% in how you tune the engine and can make crazy numbers out of some weak ass engine parts if you know what's up.
It's a Northstar. Can't say I know LS or LT at the minute. I don't recall exactly what the fuse has on it, though there is a 10, I remember that much. It does cause a check engine light. In fact it caused a number of problems the first time it happened. Traction Control stopped working, then Cruise control, then Air Conditioning, then finally the engine lost power. My brother, who is our resident mechanic but who now lives out of town, popped by and figured out it was the the fuses. He's got some way of hooking into the on board computer on the car, and he was able to get most of the faults working again. Only, he couldn't find out what was causing the fuse to blow in the first place before he had to leave, so I'm just on a mission to see if theres a simple solution to all this.
As for the 4 cylinder thing, I've been led to believe that the STS has the ability to shut down four cylinders at highway speeds when they aren't required, it's a fuel saving thing. When the fuse is not blown the car has full power. When it's blown, the car becomes very underpowered and strains alot to get moving. At higher speeds it acts normally. My brother thinks the computer is in fuel saving highway mode when the fuse blows.
Of course he could be full of it, I don't know, but he does seem to know what he's talking about for the most part when it comes to cars.
Cools the air charge temp, so your less likely to hot spot something, which is usually why motors blow up under boost.
Most Autozones will let you use a code scanner for free, if you go and try to dump the computer codes themselves, that will give you a rough idea.
I am pretty sure they weren't doing that in '99. Its just likely the computer senses something is up, and goes into the automotive equivalent of "safe mode" and runs in an extreme low power mode limp in mode so you dont get stranded with a dead car.Quote:

finding out the codes and what that fuse is supposed to handle will pin things down a bit.
Cool. Thanks for the help.
I got around to off-loading my phone's memory card from all the car shows this year, thought I'd post a few pics and bring the tread back from the dead..
Chrysler Convention Meet-up about a month ago, tons of 70s muscle you have all seen 100s of times before, so I didn't bother with the pics of them, but took stuff that was different, interesting stuff you don't see very often.

'77 Cordoba. The car that sparked my love-affair with all things Mopar. My dad had one as a kid, his was white with white leather seats and blue shag carpeting. 440cu and Chrysler "lean burn" ignition, good for aroun 180hp, but 400 lb ft of Torque.
While my dad's had an awesome '70s interior, this one was is just awesomer..

In the 80's Chrysler actually owned Maserati. Someone thought it would be a Brillant idea to have them style and build a car for them, but using mostly chrysler mechanicals. The result was the Chrysler TC by Maserati. A car that cost, adjusted for inflation, about $58,000. Yeah, it didn't sell. Most were treated to a nicely massaged 2.2 Liter Turbo motor, some got a very limted run 16V version of that motor as well. Some, like this poor model, were inflicted with the Mitsubishi V6 3.0.
American Sheet metal and transmission, built by italians, with a 3rd-rate Japaneese motor.

I've always wondered what it must be like to be able to buy a $45,000 car and then still not give a shit about the warranty....
