Jamie Moyer is an upgrade over Gavin Floyd/Ryan Madson. At the start of last year the Phillies only had two reliable starters, Brett Myers and Cory Lidle (who was reliable but certainly nothing special).
Once Hamels came up from the Minors and endured some growing pains (IE: getting rocked) and they traded for Moyer their pitching rotation rounded out pretty well. I think maybe they brought Eaton in to give him a shot to stay healthy (because of he can stay healthy scouts still consider him to be a potentially dominant pitcher) and if he can't stay healthy it'll give them a chance to test the 5 spot with some of their minor league pitching prospects.

The Phillies have also been offering good money to these big free agents but not years and that's why they've been losing out. I don't disagree with the tactic either...8 years for a 30 year old Soriano? He'll probably be slow and have lost all of his power by the end of the contract. I'd still like them to attempt to trade for Manny or maybe Vernon Wells. Supposedly though (for whatever reason, he's been working hard or something) Gillick is backing off from trading Burrell and they're expecting him to return to his 2005 form, but honestly, who the hell knows?

The Yanks won the bidding for Igawa...25 million buckaroos. Can anyone say "Fat Pussy Toad Part Deux"?

Orioles picked up Chad Bradford for 3 years/$10.5 million. Too bad for the Mets as he did a wonderful job in 06.

I like the Wolf signing for the Dodgers and once again the Phillies/Piazza rumors are out there. Seems like Piazza will choose between the Phils or A's. Choose the A's please.

The Yanks are stupid. Didn't they only bid $33 mil for Matsuzaka? Igawa's numbers were translated to MLB in that link I posted before along with Matsuzaka.

Conclusion: Probably a league average starter with a penchant for giving up the long ball. For $25 mil + contract. WTG Yanks!

Yes, it's the Cubs who started this trend of overpaying. Not the Red Sox who doled out $51m just for the right to negotiate with an unproven pitcher who has never played in the MLB.

The Phillies threw away $24m/3 years for Adam Eaton? Eaton has good stuff but can't stay healthy and has never won over 11 games or pitched 200 innings. Thanks to the Phils, who just happened to put themselves back into the financial bind they got out of when they gave Abreu away to the Yanks (Utley and Howard will get huge deals soon), the Cubs offer to Jason Schmidt of $44m/3 years will probably have to be upped to $60m/4 years. Why? Because a pitcher no one thought would get $8m/year just got it. Ted Lilly, Suppan, and other mid-tier pitchers just won the lottery.

At the time it was expected that $33 mil would win the bidding; nobody expected the Red Sox to abuse the system and cockblock everyone.

If he signs for 4 years $25 million he becomes a $12.5 million per year left handed starter; for a live arm and the expanded YES outreach in Japan he's worth that. It's not like they're paying him $33 million per year, or just bidding on him to block everyone else.....

A) Matsusuka still hasn't signed, and still hasn't proven he can succeed in MLB.

B) Schilling is old and not what he once was.

C) Clemens isn't stupid enough to finish his career in the AL, where his ERA would be 4.50

Burgundy is absolutely right; the day Boston breaks up the Ortiz/Manny tandem is the day they stop contending.

The ERA of pitchers who go to the AL point is almost moot. The AL R/G average was 4.97 while the NL was 4.76. There's a differance but it's not a very large one. The league ERA differance was only 0.07.
