Because the Braves don't want him.

I wouldn't sign that Japanese kid. He doesn't really throw that pitch.
Incidentally, Spo, if you ever watched our HS team, Sager threw that pitch. He called it his heavy fastball/heavy change because it dropped so much when it finally lost its velocity. But it always went the opposite way a right-handed pitch is supposed to fall.
Freaky looking new Reds mascot on the updated unis. JUST LOOK AT THOSE CREEPY EYES!

Some rumors (by ESPN) that the Rangers may offer Zito a contract for 6 years/$102 million. Good ol' Tom Hicks.
Cubs may be signing Ted Lilly for 4 years/$37.5 million... ugh...those crazy cubbies. Going all out for Sweet Lou eh?
Giants sign Bengie Molina for three years (no $ amount announced). Three years for the fat Molina??
Cards extend Chris Carpenter's contract for an additional 5 years/$65 million.
Tons of rumors flying about Manny getting traded...as usual. Manny to the Dodgers is the one talked about most.
Lots of other little deals went down but nothing major yet.
yeah, and the Red Sox can keep Manny Ramirez for the prices they are asking. I heard earlier today that they wanted something like James Loney, Matt Kemp, Jonathan Broxton, and Tobey Hall. Screw that crap.
The most I would give up for Manny Ramirez is: Wilson Betemit, Brett Tomko, Mark Hendrickson, Tobey Hall, DJ Houlton, and Jason Repko/and or Jayson Werth. Hell, I would even throw Yhency Brazoban into the mix if he wasn't hurt. I'll give up all those players for Manny Ramirez, but the Red Sox aren't going to touch any of our top prospects.
Hell they should just do a Manny Ramirez for Olmedo Saenz straight up trade since Vin Scully swears that Olmedo Saenz is just like an "older Manny Ramirez" and he claims "nobody can throw a fastball by Olmedo Saenz" every time he comes to the plate :)
I'd rather keep all the prospects, and try to sign Zito, Schmidt, and Maddux. I also heard the Dodgers would sign Luis Gonzalez as a "one year stop gap" so Kemp can have another year of seasoning in Triple A. I think the Dodgers could easily win with a good mix of speed, 20 homerun hitters, and great pitching.
Nah, that guy has been around forever...though I don't know if he's as old as Mr. Met.
Mr. Met was the first live-action mascot in baseball - but I'm not sure if Mr. Old-Timey Redleg was designed first.
Edit: His name is Mr. Red, and he was first found on Reds jerseys back in 1955...or before the Mets existed or were even imagined necessary. But he didn't appear in live-action until the 80s, and even now has a very creepy blank expression.

The old-timey design is the 50s original but is making its comeback for 2007. How/why the fuck the organization managed to have a baseball-headed Stalin-lookalike called "Mr. Red" during the 50s escapes my comprehension.
I never watched the team play but I remember Sager talking about that pitch. Sounds like some sort of hard screwball to me.
Update: Boston signs Drew for 5 years $70 million and Lugo for 4 years $36 million. And they're still trying to trade away Manny. What a fucked up offseason this is; I've never been happier to see the Yankees not signing players.
News is out that the Dodgers signed Jason Schmidt to a 3 year/$47 million contract.
