After seeing Bonds on ESPN it occurred to me that I have never, ever wanted someone to retire/leave a sport as much as I do him. What a fucking conceited and shameless asshole he is.
This is a great deal for the Dodgers...it's a lot of money but not a lot of years.
The Mets traded Brian Bannister for Ambiorix Burgos, a young power-arm reliever who had a rough time in KC last year but is only 22. He'll fill the Mota role, I imagine.
In addition to the Zito buzz (which still places the Mets as the most likely winner) the Mets are talking to the A's about Rich Harden and their other young pitchers. The price would certainly include Milledge and another young arm like Perez or Heilman.
And Howard Johnson will be coaching 1st next year.
I agree 100%. I had to watch the Dodgers put Lugo out on the field every single day the second half of last season, and he was absolutely worthless for our team. Maybe he will be better for the Red Sox, but he was just clogging the way for the Dodgers to start better players.
In other news, I am excited that the Dodgers signed Schmidt. Our rotation is finally starting to look pretty decent, and if the Dodgers can sign one more number 2 or 3 type starter then they can package Penny in a deal for Manny Ramirez. Honestly though, I'm not sure why anybody would want to take Penny...the dude is a big cry baby that starts way too much trouble in the club house.
Zito will certainly be overpaid but he is still an excellent pitcher. Lugo is an extremely average middle infielder.
Penny totally sucks. I mean I'm sure he's capable of pitching well on occasion but I can't see why anyone would want him, especially at the cost of Manny. Manny has his issues, but Penny is just as bad. Plus he's fat and sucks. He's going to be Sidney Ponson by mid-08.
This just has to be Matsuzaka leverage...there's no way Theo is this stupid.
What you saw wasn't even close to Lugo's potential. The Dodgers used him about as poorly as they could. They played him at multiple positions and all over the lineup. No wonder his performance was subpar. I wonder why they even bothered to make the trade since he was obviously not going to have a regular position or regular time. In my opinion the Dodgers should have played him at second or third and batted him second behind Pierre (I'm not a fan of Furcal), but that's not going to happen now.
Burg - Lugo's not a top-caliber fielder but will get the job done. He's an intelligent hitter who uses the entire field. His career average is .277 and OBP is .340. He has a good eye and is an extra-base threat, and of course he's always a threat to steal. How is this overrated? If anything, he's underrated, as he's one of the top shortstops in the majors.
His 2007 floor is .280, 100 runs, 12 homers, 60 rbis, 30 doubles, and 25 steals, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him have a career year. His arrival gives Boston a true leadoff man, something they lacked last year. Lugo & a healthy Crisp is a formidable combination - I just hope they're given the chance to run. Anyone who's a Boston fan is going to find a lot to like, especially since it also seems like Lugo's mentality is a much better fit for the city than, say, JD Drew's.
He's not excellent. I'd say he hasn't been excellent since 02 or 03. He's trended down almost his whole career. He's a #2 starter. He'll have an ERA around 4, pitch 200+ innings, and k about 6 per 9 innings. That's good but it's not approaching $100 million good.
Lugo shit the bed in LA for whatever reason. I've read about how unhappy he was there. But if you look at his stats for 05 and 06 with Tampa Bay (and even before then), you can see his time in LA is the outlier, and he is clearly better than average for a middle infielder. With the Sox he'll be back in the AL east with a regular job at SS. His stint in LA probably cost him $3-4 million a year on this contract. $8 million could end up being a reletive bargain. It's definitely an upgrade for the Sox considering they didn't have another option that wouldn't be a black hole in the lineup. I'll take my chances risking $32 million as opposed to $100 million.
Youkilis will (ok should, considering Francona isn't too bright) bat second. He has a way better OBP than Crisp. He and Lugo both see tons of pitches per plate appearance too. The top 5 of the sox next year is a killer if Manny stays as well. I see a lot of 30+ pitch first innings in the future.
