Yeah, that deal for J.D. Drew was fucking killer.
Don't forget the Lugo deal Burg, that one sent shockwaves of fear throughout MLB.
As for Zito, only Boras has mentioned anything close to $118 million. The last report I heard was that Cashman felt the Mets were already offering more dollars than he was willing to put up.
Lugo was at least possibly defensible. Drew was Chicago Tribune level batshit.
But Theo likes Drew, and Theo's never wrong!
The only thing better than hearing that the Yanks may pursue Zito is hearing it from Steve Phillips. Fuck me in the ass.
Seriously, Cashman, I actually dislike the Sox more than the Yanks right now. Don't fuck this up.
Steve Phillips has a long history of pulling things out of his ass to stir the pot with. The Yankees are not giving Zito more than 16 million per year (and I have a hard time believing they'd even go that high). Zito will go to the Mets unless some stupid middle market team buckles and gives him $120 million (hello Tom Hicks).
It appears that you are wrong, again.
It appears that Mr. Zito's dad and the Boss are good buddies
"If the Yankees want Barry, they'll get him"
PWNED.

New Yorkers (and, as usual, my buddy spo) are always the last to know what's up

I think this is all the work of Boras. Zito isn't generating the interest he had hoped so he's generating it himself. If this was 2003 Steinbrenner would be moving hard for Zito but I don't think he's calling the shots anymore. All of Cashman's recent decisions point to a theme of restraint and long-term flexibility. Even $90M is probably too much for Zito, except for the Mets who can offer him the environment he is probably most likely to thrive in and who happen to need him desperately.
I read the article before you linked it and my retort is the no one is pwned because Heyman is a turd with no credibility. The Yanks certainly do not need and probably don't even want Zito with a solid rotation already in place for 2007, a better short term fit available in Clemens, and rising stars like Hughes and Sanchez in the long term picture. The best reason the Yanks have to get Zito is to fuck the Mets who have become the hip team in NYC, and if the Boss was calling the shots, I would fully expect this.
You posted one article. There are probably five more that say the Yanks have no legit interest in Zito unless he comes at a substantial discount.
