Maybe because Schmidt isn't th at good of a pitcher?

Schmidt is a better pitcher than Zito. He's also older and less durable.
All these articles are saying is that the Rangers believe Zito will be signing elsewhere and they assume it's the Giants. These writers loves jumping to conclusions.

I'm calling horseshit on this. No way the Giants are dropping nine figures on Zito. I'll believe it when I see him hold the jersey. I think this is another Boras plant since the Yanks rumor didn't generate enough buzz.
I don't think Schmidt is better then Zito, he's had 4 years in a 13 year career where his ERA was under 4.00. He's not that bad, but he's certainly no "ace" and his 2006 was nothing to write home about in away way shape or form. I really don't think Zito is all that great either but I'd rather have him then Schmidt.
Debatable. But would you let Schmidt walk without a serious offer just to throw more money and years at Zito with no guarantee you'll close the deal? Even if you like Zito better, you don't like him that much better.
Then again, how much are the Giants paying Bonds to let fly balls drop in front of him next year? What a poorly run organization.
Honestly, I'd let both of them go because they were both asking for far more then they were worth but in terms of letting Schmidt walk, I think maybe they didn't have Zito intentions at the time and possibly decided that they wanted to grab him later.
I hope they give him 6/yrs 100mil and I hope he gets Tommy John surgery or just continues his decline.
The Mets don't really need Zito. John Maine, Glavine and Duque should hold down the rotation fine and Oliver Perez and Dave Williams could perhaps do pretty well for them (they reallly should move Heilman to the rotation too). Sure, Glavine is old and Duque is rumored to be in his mid-40's but I bet you they're both reliable this year. Even if the pitching has some problems, the Mets have an NL Top-3 offense to pick them up.
Who's in decline?
Zito?

or
Schmidt?

neither seem to be doing all that bad to me.
