Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

Saw (haha) this last night. It was pretty decent, and wayyyy more gory/brutal than the original remake.

Still, I liked the first movie better, mostly because of Jessica Biel (who was way hotter than the girls in this movie), but also because it just felt like just more of the same. I mean, aside from the different teenage victims (plus Beecher from Oz played a biker), it felt/looked like the exact same movie.

One complaint: At the end, how the fuck couldn't the girl notice a giant, lumbering retard with a chainsaw sneaking into the back of her tiny getaway car? Give me a break.

yeah the ign review was pretty brutal giving it a half star. they said the main things were the similarity tot he first movie and how retardedly dumb the characters were.

Yeah, the movie was quite meh. The best thing about it was Ermey. "That's the ugliest thing I've ever seen."

This was really great, the whole Vietnam backstory and the
origins of all these guys was so impressive. This is how
Horror Movies should be done. Jordanna Brewster is really
hot and she is a great actress that is really slept on. I
hope her career really blows up.

Elaborate, please. Because imo, the original TCM is how horror movies should be done.

I also watched this over the weekend, and thought it was pretty well-done. We didn't get nearly enough about Leatherface's origins, which would have been a lot more interesting than the pedestrian slasher-fest we got. But I suppose that was to be expected after what happend with the remake.

Bio - I like it when the Movie Makers respect the source
material they are expanding on. Keeping the gore content
high while making the characters sympathetic and human. The
original TCM was never a technical masterpiece and while the
ideas were great it felt empty, now it is just dated. Texas
Chainsaw Massacre TNG was crap cuz they made Leatherface
a cross dressing transexual, not the Leatherface who was a
slow, yet not a Monster by choice. The fact that he came
from a broken home and was manipulated or didn't truly
understand the concept of what he was doing is something
that Horror Movies haven't done often. The Sentiments of and
bitter feelings of the Vietnam War, the suffering and logic
seemed very real. The Elephant Man syndrome was such a
major factor. How many Horror Movies have compelling actors
we give a shit about?

I was really impressed w/this film. I really didn't have any expectations before hand and thought the film was really intense and it was great to see the backstories of the characters, even though it may not have been the ideas of Tobe Hooper. Other than the one issue that Dole mentioned, and I really hadn't thought about it until then, I have no complaints.

I thought it was good, too. One of the goriest movies of recent memory (excluding intentionally over-the-top gore fests).

Nowhere near as disturbing as the original, but I really don't think they wanted it to be, and I'm kinda glad. The original just makes me feel dirty. I haven't seen it in forever and don't wish to.

I don't think a horror film has to be gorey; in fact, most of my horror favorites have scarcely any to speak of. Alien, for example, didn't have much actual on-screen gore at all; the implication of what happened made it work. Ridley Scott showed just enough to give you an idea but didn't fill in the blanks, so to speak. Something you imagine is always much, much worse than anything that can be done with fx.

I do agree with the character comment, though. That's part of where the most effective horror techniques lie. To take it further, gore is far more effective when it happens to a character you care about.

Well, it's extremely well-shot, though the technology is very dated. It's not easy to make a harrowing film with barely any gore - which the original certainly is. It's starting to look more and more like the technique of fear through implication is fast becoming a lost art. It's been discussed on this board before, but I still think it's one of the most understated horror experiences that's ever been shot. That'll never become dated.

I think he knew exactly what he was doing - the only thing he could do, really. However, he was being used for purposes beyond his understanding. I wish the film had gone deeper into his psychology and his relationship with the family, esp. his early childhood years.
