The Sega CD Thread

I finally got another Sega CD today since my old one broke 6 years ago.

The Sega CD was definitely a disappointment by Sega standards and it had a huge percentage of shit games but the few great games it did have are what make it stand above machines like 3DO.

Sonic CD is excellent, one of the best platform games ever made.

Snatcher is a wonderful adventure game and until we get a better version in English, this is a good reason to own a Sega CD.

And of course the original Lunar games are great.

What are your favorite Sega CD games?

You've already mentioned my picks, so I'll say Eternal Champions, and that oft reviled classic: Double Switch.

Hell, I liked almost all of Digital Pictures cheesy games, I even had that free video you could get in the mail that expounded about the quality of Corpse Killer.

The only games I've played so far of any worth were Snatcher, Sonic CD, Shining Force CD, Silpheed, and Dark Wizard. I would like to try out Keio Flying Squadron one day.

Earthworm Jim: Special Edition is one the best reasons to own a Sega CD, besides Sonic and a few others.

I'll avoid all the obvious choices, like Popful Mail, Lunar, and Snatcher and recommend some lesser known gems.

- Eye of the Beholder: Great RPG. It's long, with a good story and decent graphics. It also has an excellent soundtrack. You can get it pretty cheap.

- Road Avenger: Awesome driving game, in the same vein as Dragon's Lair, but in an anime style. If you like it, you can also try out Time Gal and Cobra Command.

- The "other" digital comics: Everyone talks about Snatcher, but what about Rise of the Dragon and Space Adventure? Both are great DC games that have wonderful stories and characters. Space Adventure is done in an anime style, like Snatcher, and features the hero Cobra. ROTD is more American in presentation, but features a gritty, futuristic setting a la Snatcher.

- Final Fight: Excellent port (better than the GBA one IMO). Two player fun with a great soundtrack!

- Ecco games: Same as the Genny versions, but with great music (see a pattern here?).

- The shmups: Aleste, Android Assault, Sol Feace, Lords of Thunder...Get them all!!

There are a whole bunch more. I'm up to 40 games so far and am still looking! Happy gaming! :)

Sonic CD JP version has THE best music of any Sonic game, IMO. US version on the other hand...blech.

Annet Again(Anet Futatabi)...highly sought after, I'm bettin the gameplay is shit, but the art looks nice.

Also, SCD is the only system I believe that had Heart of the Alien, the sequel to the oft-praised Out of This World. To any fans of that game, did this sequel live up to it?

I got Rise of the Dragon today. I have never played the PC original but since other Sierra games were ported well, this one should be too.

So Melf, have you beaten ROTD? Is it a long game or a short game like Snatcher?

Heart of the Alien does not compare at all to Out of this World. It's decent but it has no challenge.

As for the Sonic CD import, I plan on getting it since I already own a Mega CD. I really like the domestic music tracks(the ones without vocals) so it's hard to picture an even better soundtrack.

Oh believe me, once you hear the import tracks it'll all become clear as day.

In fact, that's the sole reason I got Sonic CD on PC...because I heard MP3s of the import tunes and thought the PC rev would have them. Imagine my disappointment when they were replaced with such mundane tracks...

Final Fight CD - Almost exactly like the arcade game except for some lacking colors in spots. Blows the SNES version away and has a great redone soundtrack.

Android Assault - Reminds me a lot of Air Buster, but obviously a bit more polished with a nice CD soundtrack and graphics.

Sonic CD - Not my favorite Sonic by any stretch, but still good platformin'.

Robo Aleste - Tweaked the MUSHA gameplay a bit. Long game (11 stages?), great music and exciting levels for the most part (level 3 could've used some improvements).

Lunar 1 - I used to go by Nash on GG and TNL, and that was from this game. Needless to say, one of my favorite games and RPGs.

Lords of Thunder - Almost exactly like the Turbo CD version with some minor tweaking. Some of the improvements are for the better (shopkeeper's voice), some not (blasting off sound effect, gets a laugh every time).

Silpheed - Not phenomenal gameplay by any stretch, but it's unique and the levels can get intense just on the graphics alone. Nice soundtrack too.

NHL '94 - I used to love these games and they're still fun! The rosters are humorously outdated, but I don't pay attention to hockey anyways.

Lunar 2 and Shining Force CD I've just played for a bit. Both very good, but I can only play some many games on the internal RAM at once.

Haven't played (that I WANT to play): Snatcher, Keio, Panic! (coming in the mail soon...), Popful Mail and Road Avenger.
