I see what you all are saying and it makes sense, I just don't care for it. I prefer it when they all start out on a more even keel.
No one will fault you for that, it just doesn't make it bad game design to do so. And honestly, I've never felt the need to use the upgraded characters. I've won every battle without using them until my characters got caught up, only occasion was putting them on defense in any form of "survive turns" map. So if you ignore them, you're on even keel, as you put.
I'm always a fan of returning characters, I didn't read that until now.

Just unequip Titania and have her draw enemy fire and pick off the enemies with your other guys or just throw her in a corner somewhere :tu:
