Three weeks till launch...
I suppose we should be seeing Wii kiosks (as well as PS3) soon. I'll be happy to actually get my hands on this and see how well the wiimote controls. My guess is that Wii Sports will be at the kiosks.
the nintendo world store in NYC is supposed to have their kiosks ready to be played this saturday
EDGE has a big Wii article in thier current issue. They seem super stoked for it.

Cooking Mama.
Wii.
BE THERE.
I will. OR WILL I?
The scandinavian launch-list has been revealed:
http://www.dagbladet.no/download/wii_lanseringer.jpg
There isn't anything mildy interesting after my taste, so I'm considering pushing my Wii purchase until 2007. That is, if I somehow can get out of my preorder deal.
It says "RGB Video Cable" on there.
IS that a stupid way of saying "VGA"?
No, its RGB scart. aka EURO-connector. I don't ever game without such a cable.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...050724_002.jpg
Eew.
I was afraid that's what that meant.
It gives awesome picture quality, better than s-vhs. I'd say nearly close to vga quality frankly. Im pushing these cables on all casual gamers I encounter.
...but I want a VGA cable.
Please, Nintendo? :(
they talked about vga support a year or two ago, but i think they quietly axed it.
The market is not ready for VGA or component cables. Or online play. Or third party games.

List of games available from launch until Christmas. Gunstar heroes is on there, cools.
God, the VC list is actually more enticing. What's with all the licensed crap?
The harder I try to want a Wii, the more reason I have not to buy one. :(
Aside from a couple of the TG-16 games, I don't see anything on there that I--and probably most of the other people on here--haven't already had my fill of from the days of yore. Hell, most of those titles are already available on older "retro-compilations" from the last five or so years.
Collectors' items aside (Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, etc.), the pricing system is also pretty weak:
No sale for now IMO.Quote:
NES - $5
TG-16 - $6
SNES/GEN - $8
N64 - $10
I made a wii:
http://comet7.com/images/misc/pixel_wii.png
Also, the prices are too high to download some of that crap IMO.
Total WiiVC Launch Title price: $196.
Eh, I see a few titles that I would like to get. I think I'll probably get Mario 64 (I actually didn't play that game much on the 64) and Gunstar Heroes (never played it.) I'll probably nab a random NES and TG16 title as well just to see how it works out.
I was really hoping to see Starfox 64 come out for VC, but we'll probably see it sooner or later.
$8 for SNES/Genesis games = no. I'd pay $5 tops.
I'd pay 8 bux for Gunstar Heroes any day, man.
I want Columns too...
Columns, TJ & E, Bonk's Adventure, Space Harrier II, and Gunstar Heroes on the VC list interest me. Very few of the actual Wii launch games do, and as a result, I'll probably wait to buy the system.
I'm kind of hungry. I wish i had ice cream in my freezer. I'd go to the grocery store, but i hate going really late because someone who always buys two carts worth manages to get to the one open register before i can. Also, i need to wake up early for school. Man, i guess i won't get ice cream tonight. Maybe tomorrow.
Wii Sports control issues
Down to the nitty gritty:
After spending "several hours" with Wii Sports, IGN's Nintendo editor Matt Casamassina doesn't like the game due to flawed controls with the exception of Wii Bowling which he calls "totally rocking." Regarding Tennis, he had this to say: "You don't control anything except the swing of your player's racket. The movement of these Mii-alike athletes is all done automatically by the game. You simply swing the Wii remote back and forth to make your on-screen character do the same thing."
And for baseball, you select the pitch with the d-pad and then do a throw motion to pitch it. That sounds like some bullshit to me. More details can be found here.
Leaves me unimpressed to be honest. And while the whole "Wii isn't powerful" bit has been pounded into the dirt already how can anyone look at those tennis screens and be happy with a game that looks like that on a console coming out in 2006? How long have they been working on it? The character "models" look like a freeware game. They should just jack Virtua Tennis 2 and change the controls to use the Wii controller.
And put me in the "that's too much money for that" club for the VC games. NES games should be 2 bucks, SNES/Gen 5. 10 seems right for n64 though.
More so than tennis, that bowling game looks like it seriously made in a week by digipen students. Why not put some effort into it?
Because it's an alternative to packing a demo disc with the console, not anything resembling a fully realized game. I figured that was pretty obvious from day one.
I figured that it's supposed to look friendly and inviting to people who don't play video games. I like the way Wii Sports looks. It says, "i am not intimidating, please play me ^_^"
You people is retahded on the vc games pricing. I don't like that list, but any good NES game is worth $5. You might as well whine that it's not frii, el oh roffle.
As it stands, yeah, but it's all about the implementation. Vanilla, no improvements= no way in hell. But I'd gladly fork over the scratch if, for example Space Harrier II had a really dope control setup with the whatever the fuck dumb shit the remote is called.
Or if, for your six bucks, Dungeon Explorer had full online co-op. That shit would be omega rad.
"After spending "several hours" with Wii Sports, IGN's Nintendo editor Matt Casamassina doesn't like the game due to flawed controls"
Welcome to the Wide World of Wii. If you don't think this will be par for the course, you're incredibly naive. Kids don't need refined. They just care about pretending they are He-man or whatever the hell.
Some games will be worth full price, others won't. I'll probably snag Gunstar Heroes just because I don't have a collection with it on there, for example. On the other hand, I won't bother with Mario 64 because I've played it enough. It's not surprise that Nintendo is leading off with a Greatest Hits approach, though. Face it, people love re-buying stuff they're familiar with. For the most part I don't get it either.
James
Regarding the Wii Sports control issues, I notice that he doesn't mention anything about the other two sports. I'm particularly interested in how the golfing handles, as that looks like it's the most appropriate for the Wii controller.
Also: you can't spell ignorant without IGN. It's par for the course that he's only noticing issues that should have been obvious at both E3 and that event at the Nintendo's store in New York earlier this year.
Might as well either buy the actual cartridge or just download the rom. The former lets you actually own the real game and the latter gives you the same emulation effect that the VC will have. These games had better have interesting and unique extras of some kind, or no sale. They can't possibly compete with the typical price of a .nes file, so they had better sweeten the deal by providing something that roms do not have.
Those VC titles are pretty weak right now. They're some of the most common titles on each system and I own the majority of them already. Give me something like Nintendo World Championship 1990, complete with gobs of background information and extras, and I might consider a purchase. Leaderboards for the score-based titles would be nice too.
My sentiments exactly. The Wii's current lineup looks like the Gamecube's.
I saw Gamestop had a Wii section all set up when I went in to pick up FFXII earlier today, and took a look in an attempt to get myself psyched up about the thing. It consisted of a bunch of crap games based off of kids' movies and the new Zelda. Disgusting.
The VC lineup sucks too.
Next-gen consoles can bite me.
How do you explain iTunes' success, despite it having no advantages over pirated music and containing the drawback of DRM and a format that isn't widespread? Assuming everybody is a pirate is a damn good way to lose easy profit. Hell, look at classic game compilations that typically perform worse than MAME-emulated versions yet still sell fairly well.
because using itunes is EASY. people dont know much about computers besides turning it on and seeing whats in front of them in the form of a browser with 11 billion icons right there to take them places. you usually have to have an IQ of more than 2 to find music to pirate. 99% of pc users sadly do not have this IQ. therefore itunes has 99% of pc users in the palm of their hand. this equates to about 8 trillion possible customers. not too hard to figure out.
same with games. it's the mcdonalds syndrome as well. INSTANT gratification. with itunes and legal rom packs you just plug and play. no muss, no fuss.....no setup. this is key and always will be tot he lemmings that are the general public. people WANT their hands held, even if they have to pay through the nose to get it.
I can't see myself paying for a rom which I own on a cartridge.
Neither can I - but I will make an exception for something like Columns, which I know I'll play a lot no matter what systems I can play it on.
I don't see much on the VC list that I would want to buy given the retro collections and the Zelda OOT/MQ bonus disc. But the pricing is fair, low enough that I'd pay it for a game that I really want.
Has it been ruled out that VC games won't have any multiplayer online to them? I know it's Nintendo, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
Or, um... Some people would rather buy something than steal it. Don't get me wrong, i have all sorts of crap on my hard drive, but if it comes down to $5-$10 for something i want, i'll give a little, even if it's to THE MAN, the GUY, whatever. All this pirating shit is so 1997. I support money flow.
No wai, guy. Why would you do that in the first place?Quote:

4 Million Wii's for 2006 with North America getting the largest cut of them
Quote:
November 1, 2006
Nintendo: 4 Million Wii Consoles To Ship In 2006
Nintendo: 4 Million Wii Consoles To Ship In 2006 Officials from Kyoto, Japan-based Nintendo have confirmed that the company expects to ship approximately 4 million Wii consoles globally during the six weeks between the system's launch on November 19 in North America and the end of 2006.
The company also noted that while the largest share of that worldwide allotment will go to the Americas, Nintendo expects supply will be outpaced by demand, based on retailer orders and consumer requests.
Nintendo of America has previously indicated that it plans to ship six million units of the Wii console worldwide before the end of the fiscal year March 31st, 2007. Nintendo has also confirmed a substantial lineup of both first and third party software titles that will be available for the Wii within this six week North American window, including 32 full titles to debut before the end of the year from a number of major publishers, and 30 classic NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Genesis and TurboGrafx games for download on the Wii Virtual Console.
According to Nintendo representatives, the company has also introduced a rapid replenishment program designed to keep Wii console manufacturing up with retailer demand, and that it has employed multiple fleets of land, air, and sea transportation in each global market to maintain the supply flow, starting in the Americas.
"Wii is for both experienced and uninitiated gamers, and it will be available for the masses," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "Because of demand, we're urging shoppers not to get complacent. The level of demand we're seeing goes beyond the ordinary. Retailers are telling us a significant fraction of customers pre-ordering Wii are nontraditional gamers -- people looking for a better way to play. And that's exactly what Wii is designed to provide."
Wasn't an effort to start an argument. When I saw the list it just struck me that I paid for these games already. Also it saddens me that there is no launch game that can carry the hype I have been building up.
Mario64 interests me only coz I'm too lazy to hook up the n64 which my cousin stole anyway but I guess I won't be downloading it anyway coz it's like 10$ man. /end rant

Japan gets all the Virtual Console love. They've got the SNES Mario Picross as a launch title. Bastards!
I wonder if it'll be as difficult to get Japanese content through Wii as it is through Live....?
James
They said it was going to be region locked, but that is pretty vague. The Japan Wii and Sony retro lists are better, though.
The Japan list is grillions of times better. I guess no one would buy the crap if the good stuff was actually available. Dirty marketing.
I wonder if Street Fighter was left out in US/EU VC because of 'Capcom Classics 2'?
4 million in 6 weeks is an amazing number, I'd be really impressed if they manage that. MS better have their shit together too to get all of the people who can't get a PS3.
It's not difficult to crank out that many Wiis when you have so many Gamecubes lying around. :p :noob:
Wii unpacked! Looks nice!

I'm interested in getting whatever games I either don't have any more, never owned, or can't play any more(due to broken NES, no N64 controller etc).
They really should have released a fuck ton of games for VC so it'd be an actual selling point. Two SNES games and one N64 game is laughable. There really isn't any reason to roll them out slowly assuming there is no added content. They're too expensive anyway. My price would be NES $3, SNES $5, N64 $7 or $8. If you make thier cost more trivial, people will think less of loading up on them. I even think $2, $4, $6 wouldn't be bad, and could make them more money than the current scheme. The downside is it's like blowing your wad and then they will have trouble reselling them again later.
Was the supposed VC promotional art posted here ever proven to be real? If so, VC has a lot to live up to.
They need to support VC with as many releases as possible. A small handful of games a month isn't going to cut it, we need multiple wide-ranging titles for every system every month, as much original content as they can muster and here's also hoping whatever kind of emulation team they have working on it is truly up to task.
But I won't be hurt too much, I own many games for over 16 systems. So I do not envision the VC accomodating many ebay auctions for me (unless they also start offering TG-PCE CD games)
Anyways, I'm glad Wii sports is packed in as I was tempted to wait until Mario Galaxy is released.
Then buy them off of ebay for the same cost or less.
What's better, you don't even have to wait for the Wii to come out to do so.
I changed my mind. This list is as bad as the regular games. I own almost all of these on the e-reader, which I can play on my TV with the GBA Player.
Most of these are on the Sega Genesis Collection, which costs less than any three of these.Quote:

Urban Champion is a true classic, worth at least 10 dollars.
As long as the original content is great (imagine if they made things like expansion packs for SMB 3 or a new 8 bit Mega Man) I'll be happy.
But as Finch said, it's inexcusable not to have all 3 SMB games right off the bat (the slightest bit of neglect is a bad start).
Here's hoping VC isn't neglected like E reader and GBA connectivity.
Exactly. There are more and more compilations which render quite a few VC purchases as null. Why should I buy all of the Sonic games on VC? Why not just buy the Gems collection? I own Megaman Anniversary (with a switched Hori pad, woo) so no money from me there. Popping in MM collection or Sonic Gems is every bit as convenient and much cheaper than purchasing them on VC.Quote:
Most of these are on the Sega Genesis Collection, which costs less than any three of these.
Nintendo is throwing a party at the Nintendo World Store on the 4th from 9am-9pm. Too bad I have to work but I'll be there between 4-4:30pm, once I get out. They'll be giving stuff away and possibly a Wii?
Theres 12 kiosks already set up but just for viewing. But hands on on the 4th. Whos going?
Man, that list of virtual console games makes the string of retro releases on XBLA look good. At least the XBLA games have some minor improvements (networked leaderboards, co-op/versus play online, some have retouched graphics/sound, etc.) If these are all straight ports, that's lame as hell.
Yeah, I'm thinking Super Mario All-Stars probably won't be showing up on the Virtual Console any time soon. Too bad, it's the only place you can play Super Mario 2 Japan.
James
It's also unlockable on SMB DX as "Super Mario Brothers For Super Players." Only downside is it's 8 levels, for some reason they didn't include the 9th world.
Man, do I love my SMB DX cart. I even bought an extra copy off ebay as a gift for my brother in law after he got hooked trying to beat the lost levels. Good times.
Here's hoping they include the original Fami rev on VC.

Ability to resist getting a Wii... fading...
damn now i really wanna see em
Looks like Shadow of the Colossus
I only watched the second one, but I wasn't impressed at all. The character models looked off, the wolf portions really did look like a bootleg Okami (complete with a mini battle circle), and the rest looks like the same shit we've seen in every other Zelda game.
I think I know how Joust feels now. :(
WELL YOURE FACE LOOKS LIKE EVERY OTHER ZELDA GAME
Nice touch with the wolf howling in unison with the opening music at the end.
That doesn't mean we can't technically get VGA out of the system, right? I run the GC on low-res RGB and 480p VGA for those games that support it via custom cables. At least I hope that window is still open...
Anyone have close up shots of the the back of this thing?
Also, how does the whole VC thing work indepth? I mean where are the games stored, etc.?
The VC games are stored either on the 512MB internal storage or an all-purpose SD card you can get much cheaper online than at retail. A 2-Gig should run about $40-ish vs. a 1-Gig at EB/Best Buy for $60.
James
Just use component cables.
Here's a component to VGA adapter:

They were hooking up the Wii kiosk at my EB today. Sounded like it was going to be playable in 10 minutes. Knowing that the Wii is asswater, I just left with my goodies for zboz.
