It's been a while since i played the DS game and i never beat it, but what i've played of Second Opinion is better than what i remember of the original. The tool selection is much improved and using the remote is much more immersive.

Heads up if you're still trying to find a Wii; Best Buy held a lot of it's stock for Sunday. Word just got out this morning, so the info will only have a day to spread; your chances will probably be good if you get there an hour or two in advance. The expectation is about 25 Wii's per store.
Oh I'm not buying one. Not until I physically play it and confirm its excellence anyway.
I like it, but I'll wait for you guys. I hate sticky shit on consoles.
Word. Let me know how that works out.
Out of curiosity, does anybody have any idea when some sports games might show up that really use the wiimote? While most of the games on the Wii Sports disc are a lot of fun, they make the wiimote look embarrassingly weak. I'm hoping there are some games where the movement of the wiimote is tracked a lot more accurately...
I went to EB last night and there were Wiis on the shelves for people to get. Two people just walked up, asked for them, and got them while I was buying R6: Vegas.
All the PS3 boxes had NOT IN STOCK on them. LOL @ Sony.
also didnt yoshi post a baseball game in this or another wii related thread?
Well, I finally got my Wii. Lots of running around by myself and with Andrew. All of Friday I ran around the whole city looking for a Wii and watched them sell out literally in front of my eyes, or arrived to be told that they just sold the last one five minutes ago. I did however manage to snag three wiimotes and nunchucks plus Zelda! [Picked them up because I heard they were even harder to find than the console, that way no stress for accessories when I did officially secure one.] Yesterday the woman at Costco said come back today at 9 o clock we will have Wii. I showed up and there was already too late, there was only 13 and I was 15 in line. With the negative news of Costco I went over to EB Games because it's basically in the same plaza and they were supposed to recieve shipment on Friday, but it never arrived. I figured it was a shoo-in for sure. Waited outside with a few parents, was second in line. When the clerk arrived he said they had no Wii and was not expecting any today [which is the direct opposite of what I was told all Friday.] The line thinned a bit when he checked the system and saw that no Wii shipments were due, but I waited it out, and the delivery at 11 weilded about 20 Wii, since I was second in line I got it no problems, along with Madden. Came home, haven't really touched Zelda, just playing Wii sports with friends and a bit of Madden, this console is definitely the party console.
Wii Boxing is frustrating. I want to punch at full speed, and when I do the sensor doesn't register half the time. What fun is a game where you get to punch but need to reel yourself in to make it work? Maybe turning down the sensitivity would help?

The article explores how people are beginning to develop -- wait for it -- "Wii elbow."
MISSILES OF LOL TIMES 1000Quote:
Nintendo's name-dropping spokesperson Perrin Kaplan is quoted in the piece saying she hasn't received any complaints about soreness. Serving back WSJ's backhanded compliment she says, "It was not meant to be a Jenny Craig supplement ... if people are finding themselves sore, they may need to exercise more."
Most gamers are fatties and you know this.
good for perrin to be a little ballsy
"It was not meant to be a Jenny Craig supplement ... if people are finding themselves sore, they may need to exercise more."
Ditto. Same goes for baseball. As much fun as Wii Sports is, I cant help but feel like its garbage. The way you swing in Tennis makes no difference as to where the ball goes, it's only based on timing. "Throwing" the ball in Baseball results in a 63 mph ball, whereas as slow motion "throw" will result in a 90mph ball. Boxing is probably one of the worst offenders, by being completely unresponsive and not fun. Bowling and Golf, however, get my approval.
The only Wii Sports games I really enjoy are Bowling and Golf; baseball is fun every once in a while but it takes way too long to finish a game.
I really want boxing to be as good as I think it should be.
Bahn, how do you control the boxing? The instructions are pretty sparse, so I've just been throwing punches in what I'd like to be a 1:1 translation onscreen. It's not working so well, and I can't help but feel that if I knew what the game was looking for I could play it better. As it is I'm more flailing my way through fights rather than working the technique I'd love to bring.
James
There's a definite method to the boxing; I haven't mastered it yet but my girlfriend has. I'll ask her how she does it.
Her dickhand is strong.
To be honest, I don't bother much with developing a "technique"
I just throw flurry combos (left, left, right, hooks, etc). I never read the book, but I've had little problems winning matches when I played. It would be nice if the realism was accurately presented; perhaps EA may deliver with a Wii-branded version of Fight Night.
In any event, golf, bowling are my two favorite events in WiiSports.
My take on the games I've got now:
Wii Sports
I actually like all five of the games, though some are clearly better than others. I definitely dig the Mii incorporation--makes boxing so much better when you're beating on a look-alike of your friend (or dad). I like that all of the games are very quick, very pick-up-and-play. I've played Wii Sports with nearly a dozen people over the past week--ranging from frequent gamers to someone's grandma--and everyone's picked it up quite well (except for the grandma, who had trouble figuring out bowling; I think the transparent character had her confused).
Tennis
Wii Sports Tennis is my favorite of the five games included. It's just simple fun, and a good use of the controller. Best part is that it supports four players. It's so simple I can't say much about it--but there's room building skill at the game.
Boxing
I actually like Boxing more than most people seem to, but I definitely see where it can be frustrating. If you get hit or block, there's an invisible stun time during which your punch inputs aren't recognized. I guess it makes sense to me as a long-time fighting game player (where that design is status quo), but it's less obvious what's going on from the pseudo first person view.
You need to use pretty exaggerated motions, almost mocking the move you want to do, in order to get the desired result. There are basically three attacks--jab, hook and uppercut. Uppercurts are hard to trigger, but jabs and hooks come easy for me.
Baseball
I didn't expect to care much for Baseball, but it's actually pretty fun. Though based on the relatively short amount of time I've spent with it, it seems like there's too much advantage to the pitcher. You pick which sort of pitch you throw by holding different buttons on the Remote, and affect the speed with the speed of your fling (it works predictably for me--dunno why it doesn't for napalm). This all is pretty well balanced. The biggest advantage comes in the invisible (to the batter) position changing the pitcher can use. Tapping LEFT and RIGHT on the D-PAD lets you change the position over the plate, letting you throw wild balls that are really, really hard to predict. In single player games, the computer doesn't seem to use this so much--it's easy enough to score hits. But against other players, it's soooooo tough. Too many scoreless games among me and my fellow players.
Bowling
The Bowling is just fantastic--probably the best game on the disc as far as controls. Almost everyone I play with seems to have a natural left spin, though I've seen people with a natural right spin so I know it's not the game's problem. And in fact, granny tosses usually yield pretty straight rolls. Some of the challenge modes look cool, too, but I haven't gotten around to playing them. Four player bowling is just too good--a nice touch that your Wii Remote beeps when it's your turn to bowl.
Golf
It took some time for me to get good at Golf--I was hitting the ball way too hard all the time. But then it was pointed out to me that the map in the lower-right lets you know how hard to hit it--from then on, I had a lot more fun with Wii Golf. Again, it's four-player which is awesome. My biggest complaint is that the motion recognition seems to change once you get to putting--it's really hard to tap the ball, or even get the game to recognize a forward swing without just flicking the Remote (which results in hard hits).
Excite Truck
This game would've been great if Nintendo had done it in-house. The concept is cool, and racing for points instead of just first place is a nice change of pace. It takes a while to get into, but before long it becomes a blast to successfully link jumps, tricks and truck smashes to boost the score.
But really, this game lacks the polish you'd expect from a Nintendo game. The presentation is very cheap and the visuals are pretty blah with no distinct style to save them. It does look clean and runs smoothly--it's enough, but just barely.
I'm glad I got the game, though I dunno how ardently I'd recommend it. Its best play is in passing the controller between friends, trying to get S ranks on all the races.
Twilight Princess
Honestly haven't played it enough to make any judgements other than this: the game starts out slowwwwwwly. My brother and I went back and forth with the game and after four hours still hadn't really gotten beyond parts of the game that feel like the introduction (vague spoiler: still haven't reached Hyrule).
I do know that the controls work well--I don't think I'd call it better than normal Zelda controls (like Wind Waker's), but it's certainly not awful or a distraction. Unnecessary? Probably. But the Wii controls don't have me aching for a GameCube controller. They work perfectly fine.
Thanks for the detailed impressions Mark. I've considered Excite Truck for a while but like you said, it seems kind of shallow for a $50 game. As someone that loves games like Rush, Beetle Adventure Racing, etc it constantly tempts me. For $30 I'd be unable to say no.
I feel like I got my money's worth. A custom soundtrack goes a long way, and man, it's an absurd amount of fun. Two player sucks, though. You can't see where you're going with the screen split down the middle.
If you like SF Rush and other similarly ridiculous racing games, you ought to pick it up, or at least borrow or rent it and see. It's a good time.
I absolutely love Excite Truck, and recommend it wholeheartedly. It's just a big stupid fun racer with some serious challenge to it once you start playing it properly, going for all S-Rank to unlock Super Excite Mode. I've got four races to go in Platinum, and it's going to take some effore to clear them out. It's much more fun than I was expecting it to be.
James
No idea, haven't unlocked it yet. I'm looking forward to finding out, though. :)
James
It's a tie between the NES skin or the slick Dharma inititive "joystick station" design.
Indeed. Perrin Kaplan ftw. Nice to see a public rep give a long overdue slam to idiot mainstream electronic consumers and the media that panders to them. I approve. :tu:
She could have added in an extra jab about how just like a normal remote, a Wii controller is not meant to be carelessly flailed in front of your TV screen.
This fool can't be for real.Quote:
Ryan Mercer lifts weights during the week but Wii Sports' boxing is pwning him, "I was soaking wet with sweat, head to toe -- I had to go take a shower.
What.....on earth. "Instead of using your 'detective work' to figure out how a remote controller is fun and how it works with a video game, why don't you use your 'detective work' to go find Osama Bin Laden? Ha! Huh... Wow! Now there's a thought!" I don't know what's worse. The fact that this guy sounds like he may be serious or the fact a man of that age is searching videos on youtube. :doubt:
And candles being used as LEDs? The Wi...it's a hit with everyone from the in laws to them kooky gothic kids. Whatta system. I tell ya.
edit:
I couldn't resist making fun of him (had to split the comment, youtube has a lame posting system):
Quote:
Monitor1CC: "Detective work, huh? So, um I guess NOW we can use our remote controls to have fun with our video game systems?!" Yes, dad. There are also now fun remotes for easy chairs. And Matlock was an attorney, not a detective. You're an "old" dude trying to talk smack about "the crazy kids' tech" but you're not even a competent Andy Griffith fan. BTW, I dunno about finding Osama, but I'd look into your hair do. Because that burgeoning comb over you're developing is a definite act of terror."
I want a Virtual Console thread. Is there interest for that sort of thing? Will it be all "LOL! YOU IS STUPID FOR SPENDING MONIES ON ROMS!" and "Gar! $5 is too much but i'd buy at fitty cent!"? Do i need to count on *shudder* neogaf for info on VC?
I think a VC thread will be a good thing once there are a couple more games up there. The X360 Live arcade thread is good to have and I see this being the same.
I finally got one! YAY! I had heard the rumor that Best Buy was holding them back for the Sunday ad, but couldn't get confirmation. I set my clock for 7 this morning, hopped on the computer and checked, and the ad said they have at least 12 per store. Hopped in the car, got there about 7:30, and there was only one other dude there. SUCCESS! We didn't actually form the line until after 8 though when a few more people showed up.
I'm just waiting for it to update now, it doesn't take too long since they aren't getting hammered.
Did Dylan own somebody?
Same here. According to the people in line there was something in the sunday paper about the Wii at BB so lots of people showed up. I was going to head over about 9:30 but my wife called from work saying that the BB manager bought 25 hot chocolates for the people waiting in line for the Wii and that if I wanted one I'd "better get my ass out of bed and into line." Got to BB at 8:00 and was 20th in line; the store got 41 Wiis but no extra Wiimotes or Nunchucks. I picked up Zelda, Trauma Center and the console.
Hooking everything up now. Horray!
Funny story, some old people in line about seven places in front of me were waiting for the PS3. Lol, they had the nerve to get angry at the employee who broke the bad news to them.
Anyone start to see component cables in stores yet?
A best buy near me said they got some at launch but were all sold out.
Yeah, I was lucky. One of the other guys (who was like 4th in line here) said he had already been to another BB and they already had a ton of people. I think our store only had 12 systems though, but didn't have any accessories except for the remote glove and carrying cases. None of the people I had seen picked up any games-they already had them, they just needed a system.
I played Wii boxing, bowling and tennis last night with Gibbits and 6 or 7 other guys. A night of merriment and alcohol that ensured fun. I also made a Mii of Saddam Hussein and rocked everybody in Wii tennis with it. I'm not that good at Wii bowling though. This system, atleast the way we were playing it, is fucking rad.
We also ordered 35 dollars worth of Junior Double Bacon Cheeseburgers from BK. The look on the face of the poor girl who took the order was priceless. I think she even said "You're joking, right?" to Gibbits as he slammed the money down abbrasively, as if to tell her to get to the grill.
This is wrong. The ball in Tennis will spin different directions depending on the tilt of your controller at the time of the swing. I haven't experienced much problem with Wii boxing. You have to make sure you're not leaning backwards when you want to strike because your Mii will lean back, purposely, to take less damage / avoid damage.
Yeah but that tennis shit is wrong.
I'm not sure if anyone but me cares, but I tried hooking up a digital only PS2 joystick (Pelican Real Arcade) through the Nyko PS2-cube adapter and it worked like a charm. The hard part is finding the adapter that works with digital pads/sticks, but it works fine on the Wii. We are go for Metal Slug, as long as it supports button mapping like previous home ports.
Nice work Gohan, Six. Get those Wii codes posted in the online forum so we can add you to the family!
I too am finally I proud Wii owner. Got to BB a little after 8 today. As I approached the line there with about 16 people and the last person turned to me and my heart dropped and then he said those magical words, "your the last one". I was elated. I was actually the 12th person actually buying a system (12 minimum per store). My store actually ended up getting 18. Even after they told people that they were sold out, 10+ people waited in line. A kid 2 infront of me drop his ticket and it started blowing to the back of the line. I luckily was able to stomp on it before somebody else grabbed it as, the Best Buy people said as they handed out tickets, if you lose yours, you lose out.
Sweet Drone, what games did you get with it?
I too finally got my Wii today from Best Buy. This morning I woke up at 2 and walked for about an hour down to the Inner Harbor (the only place you can get videogames actually IN the city). I was second in line. They ended up getting 27 units, which was more than what they got on launch. I'm just glad I don't have to wait in the cold any longer, that was getting just slightly annoying... Only bought Zelda with it, I'll probably rent other launch titles before I sink 50 bucks on them.
Does anyone know when more are expected? My brother-in-law is dying to find one since playing Wii Sports on turkey day.
It's Nintendo, you can't play shit online.
The burgers and the fries were ALL gone within 5 minutes. I think I ate 4 and drank two Mooshead lite's in that span. There was a lot of Rye and coke moving around as well. I'm surprised none of it got spilled when we were playing bowling either, because every player was running that shit like a real ball. Nobody was sitting.
I'm still hoping that they make this happen. Wii bowling or tennis can't require that much pipe. I don't really mind though. I enjoy the social aspect of playing it with people more than anything.
One guy was doing a full on windmill bowling move the entire time and hit like 4 strikes in a row because of it. You can't get that online. Though he does seem to make a nasty ass drunk, and you don't get the constant "Is that my beer?" interrogation every 10 minutes.
Huh? I thought they only made junior bacon cheeseburgers at Wendy's?
Anyways, Andrew's meal = sacrilicious. mmmm
:lol:Quote:

My food of choice with games is wings, pizza and a Guinness.
Wings and pizza are too greasy. You get the remote all dirty. And I'm the only guy in the room that can stand Guinness (I actually like it). Moosehead is a great beer though, easily one of the best tasting I've ever had.
I got no problems with cleaning the remotes, I just hate that damn system itself isn't scratch-resistant.
Mmm... wings and Guiness.
Right, but when we have a game get together we usually all take a break and to have have our meal. Our other game session mealk 'o choice is ribs from Famous Dave's.
For pale, my fave beer over anything is Base Ale. Will have to try Moosehead sometime.
The most skunky beer I ever had in my life is Rolling Rock.
It tarnishes the finish over time. Maybe it doesn't and I'm being a baby. If people have wings I'm not going to be a little bitch about it but keeping things clean is always better IMO.
It's Canadian beer so I don't think retailers are legally allowed to sell it in the states. Even in Canada it's hard to find it on tap since it's one of the only independant Canadian beers out there.
...what are you talking about?
Regardless, yes, we have Moosehead, and it's good. Nothing too exciting though. If it's the best beer you've ever had, there's a lot of awesome stuff out there waiting for you.
edit:
Seriously, what the fuck are you talking about? Canada has a ton of craft breweries. Some great ones, too.
It's just my personal favourite for the price. I thought you yanks weren't allowed to serve beer over a certain amount of alcohol?
Some states do have laws limiting such. The liquor and beer laws vary wildly from state to state, it really sucks, but in places where you can purchase a full range of beers from around the world, there's generally some good Canadian representation. Unibroue in Quebec is one of my favorite breweries, period.
So, yeah, that Wii thing... :P
I just got Mario 64, and the emulation is fantastic. Still can't find a classic controller, but it plays really well with the GC pad. The ingame manual is nice too, not that it's necessary for most players, but it looks like some work went into it. Not that this makes up for the prices that they're charging for some games, but it's really, really nice.
My Wiimote batteries are actually running low. A week? Cripes.
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0213191 This is looking better and better as time goes on...
Yeah, mine ran out super fast.
But it was the shitty batteries that came with the system, duracells seem to be lasting longer.
Better off going to www.thomasdistributing.com and get some better batteries. 1900mAh wouldnt last too long. I suggest getting 2700mAh.
I'm waiting for companies to start releasing rechargeable battery packs so I can review.
I haven't tried them in the Wiimote yet, but the cheapass 2800mAH Digital Concept batteries that Walmart sells lasts a good long time in a Turbo Express, and that thing practically needs a nuclear power plant to stay running.
http://www.thomasdistributing.com/ac...-batteries.htm
Fucking sick.
Target sells a 4 pack of energizer 2500 AA's with charger for 10 bucks, that's what I was going to pick up tommorow.
Drone: Understood. My finances are tight as well; I started out with just Zelda but then sprung for Red Steel.
I meant Bass Ale of course. :sweat:Quote:
Me: For pale, my fave beer over anything is Base Ale.
And looks like I will definitely be investing in rechargable batteries.
I'm at like 18 - 20 hours and I'm still showing 3 bars, but I will definitely be getting some rechargeable batteries for this. Any one catch the trailer for Sims Wii at gametrailers.com

i love this mentally deficient comment.
"Are loading times always that damn long? I don't use my iPod as my TV- maybe they should have put a not-slow processor in the thing; can't have been that much bigger."
it's not even a real browser and this retard can't grasp that you can surf the web perfectly fine on a pentium II which is years before the Wii cpu. god i want humanity to die. but since the Wii isn't as powerful as the other consoles that MUST be why it runs like crap.
this is also interesting.
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/27/ca...microsoft-hip/
From the profile: "When it became clear that Microsoft had to enter the console business, building from scratch wasn't his superior's first choice. 'I wanted to acquire Nintendo,' recalls Rick Thompson, a vice-president who then ran the hardware business. Allard pushed to do the whole project in-house, and Microsoft ultimately vaulted ahead of Nintendo."
"I wanted to acquire Nintendo."
lol Wow. That would've went well. Yup.

Typical MS. Thank goodness Nintendo didn't sell. And it forced MS to get it right on their own while receiving some deserved hard knocks from the 3rd parties. It was nice to see a big monopoly company have to beg for a change.
In my perfect world Nintendo would make their 4 good games a year on the Xbox 360, and I would play them online and in high def with all of my friends.
I picked up this tonight for 10 bucks at Target: http://www.amazon.com/EVECHDCWOB-Com...061235-2836745
Energizer Compact Charger with 4 2500 AA batteries. There's a similar model that charges in only 15 minutes (as opposed to 8 hours) but it's about double the size and twice the price. I wanted the most compact unit possible since I'll probably be travelling with it.
The difference is that Nintendo has talent in their studios.
