Woke up at 8, went to the Canadian Superstore for 8:30 in anticipation of their 9:00 opening. They had already handed out tickets to the no-lifers who were already there. Walked down to Rogers Video and was the fourth person in line... then the guy came out and announced that the only had three. Went down to Future Shop and there was an ungodly lineup. Walked over to EB and there were 9 people in line. It was 9:30 at that point, and they weren't opening until eleven. Patience paid off, though - I got my Wii.

Too bad Zelda is sold out absolutely everywhere. I rented a copy at the Roger's Video, but couldn't find one to actually buy. Maybe I'll "lose" this rental... Anway, it's fun. The graphics look like they're from a decent (but nowhere near top-of-the-line) GameCube game. The controls are fine, except for fishing. Fishing is just terrible. There's a lot of plot for a Zelda game.

Is there any way of renaming a save file? I was stupid and let it default to Link, which I never use. Guess I'll have to copy it to SD and fiddle with it on PC.

Wii Sports kicks ass. I LOOOOVE golf and bowling. Tennis is great fun in multiplayer. Baseball is okay but not all that good. And I hate boxing. The controls in boxing feel so imprecise.

Incidentally, the Wii works with the Nintendo WiFi USB dongle. Too bad I couldn't find any place that was selling Wii points, or I'd try some of the downloads.

Do GameCube controllers work with the downloadable games? I don't really want to fork out for yet another controller.

You dont have to buy the wii points card, you can just buy them in the store if you have a credit card. Gamecube controllers should work with most VC games.

By that time though, won't the game be readily available?

Anyhow, I got the last copy of Zelda at Fry's today. It was a great feeling, like getting the candle in Zelda II.

According to the VC store, Genesis games work with everything, the classic controller, GC pad, and wiimote. Wonder how that works... A = A, 1 = B, 2 = C? Sounds kind of awkward for games that require all 3 buttons.

I played more Wii today. Played Wii Sports, saw Zelda.

This is easily the most embarassing console I have ever seen/played/heard. By far. Wii Sports was fun for 1 playthrough on Bowling and Baseball (no fun for the other three)...Zelda was just LOLtastic. It's almost 2007, Nintendo. Detail textures, please. The Wiimote speaker is crap, and there are some WTF is that stupid crap in Zelda (the bird hits the cat and reacts as though it hit a wall? WTF??!?! Must be "Nintendo charm"). I still think Trauma Center might be fun, but I dunno. Power Glove 20th anniversary.

Blast Factor for PS3 is better and more polished than anything I've seen on Wii...surprisingly, every Burger King game has more playability than Wii Sports. I do not have a clue as to what you guys are playing. I wish I was joking. I have a real rooting interest in this thing flopping hard. If gaming is going in the direction of shoddy quality control and not even marginal upgrades in technology, that's bullcrap. That is BULL

After GTA 3, if San Andreas came out in 2010 with a crappy controller, would you be happy with it? That's exactly the same transition as Zelda OoT to now. Nine years and you get a bigger world, 1 generation leap of graphics and a few more side missions. Hell SA seems like a bigger leap over GTA 3 than this was over OoT.

I watched Master beat the AI in Wii boxing by holding his arms straight up in the air and 'punching' the ceiling. Holding back swings in golf and tennis (and I believe baseball too) resulted in actually swinging. You can't swing too hard in golf or you'll automatically slice or hook??? That makes no sense. How about make it so you have to be ACCURATE and that determines the trajectory.

This is true. Parts of Zelda really do look vely nice, but a lot of it doesn't even look as good as a good Gamecube game.

Got my Wii Sunday morning.

Wii Sports is complete trash, I almost wish it wasn't packed in; it's embarrasing.

Trauma Center is AWESOME, you pick your tools with the nunchuck while you use the wiimote, it makes everything go like 100x faster. Love it.

Zelda is pretty damn good so far, it's really really interesting to see how fucking parallel it is to Okami. I wonder wtf is up with that. Damn good game so far, wolf Link is pretty awesome.

As far as the controls go, aiming the slingshot or the boomerang is easy as shit and great, but having to waggle the controller to attack is getting really, really annoying. I wish I could just push a button =(

Also, I'm looking at this thing on an HDTV with fucking standard AV cables, this is completely unacceptable. I guess I'll look around for component cables, but shit Nintendo dropped the ball on that.

The weather and news channel don't work yet. I added my friend John to my address book and I can't send him messages; it's grayed out. I hate this stupid Nintendo DS friends system, Xbox Live completely destroys it in every way.

So far, I have the original versions of every game on the VC so I haven't bought a thing yet.

so theres internal memory on the system for game saves right? memory cards are kind of pointless at this point? might get one today as i thought trauma center was $20 (thought i read it in the last thread) but im not sure if wii sports and finally being able to drink again will satisfy me for a while.

Wow that's fucking crazy. They opened at 6 am today too. I saw on neogaf that while nintendo hasn't put out an official press release yet that based on the reports they were getting from retailers, it looks like they sold over a million Wiis on launch day.

Same, I picked my Wii up Sunday and I'm stuck with composite cables because Gamestop didn't get any component cables in and Gamecube components don't work with the Wii :(

I had to order them from Nintendo's online store, sucks they weren't made more readily available :bs:

Looks like Nintendo was right. I have to say, that even though the graphics aren't that great, even in Zelda, I am loving my Wii.

We played it on my friend's 42" plasma, and the games looked better than I was expecting.

Got mine. I got to the World Store at 10:30am and waited 20 minutes to get in, and then 10 to buy the system. People must be real worried PS3-style that they weren't going to get this. They just kept bringing out systems and accessories non-stop. Of the batch of people who were let in with me, I was the only one who preordered.

And I really think I needed to camp Best Buy on Sunday morning for the component cables, which is incredibly retarded.

My brother and I got 2 this morning at the Target in Hackensack. Probably waited an entire hour and a half in line. I just finished playing Wii Sports and while it's not terrible it's also not a game I would've payed any money for. I've yet to try Zelda but one of the employees said they had 300 of them.

Anyway, I'm pretty unimpressed and I'm selling the extra one ASAP. Also, fuck nintendo for not having the channels up and running. How fucking hard is it to have the weather displayed?

I don't see why the Japanese cables wouldn't work with the Domestic Wii system, but those are coming out around the same time as the USA ones so we still can't get them any sooner :(

It really surprised me that the component cables for the Wii didn't come out when the system launched, not so much by Nintendo (they always drop the ball on limited system accessory availabilty) but more so 3rd party cable makers.

I mean if anyone of them was able to come out with a set of component cables for the Wii at launch I think they could've cleaned up on sales seeing Nintendo's weren't coming out for almost another 3 weeks after launch I'm sure quite a few would've sold even to those like me who only really like to buy first party peripherals just to have them now.

Same I ordered mine from Nintendo's online store, I really only like buying first party cables as well because all the 3rd party ones I've bought have had problems or are not nearly as good, including Monster Cable's expensive ones imo :p

Just sucks to have to use composite after waiting all this time for the Wii and Zelda, I haven't used composite cables since I upgraded my TV back in 1991 when I went S-Video (other than systems that only use composite cables); and it's not like only a few Wii titles can run in 480p from what I read I think all of them can which makes me wonder why these cables we're put on such a low priority :bang:

they'll work just fine I'm waiting to see what happens with the guy bandit knows if that doesn't pan out then I'll have to order them from play asia myself as well

there were 3rd party cables available, React, and 2 or 3 other companies had them out. Just retailers like BB, and others only ordered like 5 of them for launch. And good old Gamestop in their wisdom didn't bother with any 3rd party brands.

Has anyone else had sound issues with the Wii? Certain types of sound (like that choral bit when you put the Zelda disc in) are incredibly fuzzy. I'm using the standard RCA cables, but none of my other consoles have this problem. It doesn't matter what I hook it up to, either - I get the fuzziness through my TV speakers and through headphones attached (via an adapter) to the cables.

Can someone plz confirm that the wii system updates go extremely slow? After it recognized the access point it timed out twice, than finally after 20 minutes it finished, asked me for my country and started updating again...and the bar hasn't moved at all. If I knew this I probably would have just started playing the games.

That's an issue with the wireless connection. I've read about a fix on GAF: Log into your router's config page and change the wireless channel to 1 or 11.

Oddly enough, this helped about 6 or 7 people in their official Wii thread, so I figured I'd post it here.

Like epmode said change your wireless channel, since most routers by default are set to 6, if you're in an area with other routers there is going to be alot of noise and interference which seems to effect the Wii more so than say your computer (most likely since the antennas on the wii are quite small, a fraction of the size of the antennas on your PC) so by changing it to a channel with less noise and shit going on it will make a huge difference.

Perky: Sounds like some sort of glitch. Everything I've read has stated that you can absolutely copy the games to SD cards (just not play them on other Wii's). You'll probably be able to download a fixed copy of F-Zero soon. Aside from playing the VC is there any use for the Classic Controller if it can't play Cube games? I already own all the current VC games for systems that are still hooked up.

Plaid: It will look better because of the jump in signal quality and also because it will let you run the games in 480p instead of 480i. If you have an HDTV the component cables are required.

I believe it's when you hit the home button during the game (it's an option in the game, not the system menu). As soon as the Wii finishes it's online update I'll jump on Zelda and find it for you.

My Wii does not update slow.

You can press the Home button during a game and click on the controller pic to adjust the speaker volume. I toned it down to "loud" from the default "ungodly."

I want cables too... and a nunchuk -- all the stores around here ran out. Thank goodness I was able to get Zelda though.

redstar: I think we've all experienced that... it's really strange. The PS3 download rate for updates/content seems to be the fastest amongst all the new systems.

I just finished updating my Wii; it asked me if I wanted to link my MyNintendo account to the Wii, I said yes. Is there some way to get Wii Points for registering Nintendo software with those pin numbers most of the first party stuff comes with lately?

I'm curious as well. Especially since EGM reported months ago (in the Zelda/Revolution double cover feature) that VC games would be quote "cleaned up for progressive scan." Maybe they are only modifying video for N64 games?

Played Wii sports with my GF today, did some co-op tennis, baseball, golf, bowling and boxing. She like Tennis and Bowling the best.

if you look through the FAQ on the Wii for the VC channel they say the update button is for when new versions of the game you all ready bought comes out, so say they clean up Zelda nes or something you'll get it for free. It makes one think they may be planning something in the future and with everything else just couldn't get them out for launch, but who knows.

Yeah I think it's just part of them being fucking stupid about cables, I have no idea why they wouldn't have them at launch, I can understand not including them (all though yeah I do think companies should just ship component/composite combo cables with systems now a days) but to not have them in stores for launch is fucking retarded.

Like I said though, for those who have their system right now, this is an inconvenience. But it'd be just plain criminal if in the HD age they release a cheaper produced Wii with composite only later.

Anyways, two more of my friends are getting the system this weekend, can't wait to try it.

I remember reading that a lot of the multiplayer VC games will have added online functions in the future (free if you already downloaded the game). I have to admit, finally getting to play Goldeneye online would be fun. Or the original Mario Kart. Or Contra games. So sexy.

I don't know if they'll go that far, remember there are S-Video cables for the system but it's kind of like why spend 25 - 30 bucks on S-video cables to just have to pay the same price to have component in a few weeks. Though them taking out component wouldn't be anything new for them. When they redid the NES to the top loader they took out composite support, when they redid the SNES they took out S-video Support, I think in Europe later model N64's lacked RGB, and as you know they took out component. I really do hope that come next systems launch that everyone (MS, Sony, and Nintendo) either include Composite/Component combo cables or a set of HDMI and a set of composite cables with the system.

Yeah you know I hadn't thought about it until I was writing that reply and thinking about what cables came with past Nintendo systems. Big change in attitude from SNES to N64 launch.

I can understand that, I don't get what's with Sony and Nintendo, least Microsoft included them. Though at least with the PS3 I believe you can use PS2 component cables on it, and for the HDMI cable isn't it a separate port from the regular A/V out.

You are absolutely right so far (I wasn't counting the 32x and Sega CD as separate systems towards the 9 though). One of them isn't really fair because there's no way to see it well; the black thing on the top shelf to the left is a Nomad. Those Mario and Link plastic things next to the Wii are from a Toys R Us NES promo in 1987; I couldn't resist putting the Wii between them (Chux's picture gave me the idea).

The game isn't Banjo or F-Zero. I'll give you a hint: it's one of the largest N64 carts ever published.

My friend's brother got a Wii. I went over to her house to play it. We played Wii Sports (I only played a game of tennis). It was really fun at first, but when her cousin left (he brought his controller and took it with him), it got really boring. We then put in Excite Truck and that sucked too just watching one of my friends play. So in conclusion:

Playing Wii with friends = awesome
Playing Wii alone = lame

Just finished playing some sweet sweet Wii sports with a buddy of mine. I love bowling and baseball, but got my ass handed to me in boxing. The user interface is pretty nice, and does anyone else love the SNES style of the music and sound effects?

There were 9 or 10 of us at my friend's place earlier tonight, and we had boxing tournaments. Wii Sports is the most fun ever.

I'm enjoying the hell out of single player Excite Truck, but multiplayer sucks with the way the screen's split. You can't see much.

Wish I could get back to Zelda, but... school work, then packing to go home. Zelda later, I guess. :(

So, you can use the GC controller for the VC, but you can't use the classic controller for GC games?

Finally got everything updated (switching the router to 11 helped drastically) and started playing some Wii Sports, nothing amazing but still a lot of fun to play. The wiimote is pretty accurate, but in boxing sometimes it registers even the slightest movement and I punch with the wrong hand. I laughed when I saw the warning message at the start of the game to attach the wii remote cord to your wrist, than figured out why when I almost threw the wiimote through the tv while bowling. Trauma Center: SO is really addicting and I'm pretty amazed at how precise the wiimote is, the assistant is really annoying though and I wish she'd just stop talking while I perform in the OR (my GF has affectionately named her Nurse Bitchface.) I only played about 5 minutes of TP because I'd rather wait for better cables, and I'm still only at Raithwall's Tomb in FFXII (i'd rather not have to big adventures going on at the same time, it's like reading two books.) Overall, a good purchase and a decent launch line-up. I still might pick up Monkeyball and Rayman. No Toejam and Earl right away was a disappointment, but I picked up Sonic and it controls pretty well with the wiimote until the classic controller is readily available.
