Rarely intentionally. Obviously I play new games that I think have potential and then am often disappointed. I never intentionally play 7/10 games and even avoid 8/10 games unless the theme is something I really like.
The other scenario is where the pinnacle of the genre is so old that I'll take what I can get. 2D fighters come to mind here. Mech's Metroid argument works here too.
Fair enough. BOT, Scurge has enough charms and gameplay to stand on its own, but the closest game I can think of is Metroid. I should not have said it is Metroid-lite, it is long enough and different enough to stand on its own. It is not the greatest game ever but it works for what it is and for $10, it is more than worth it.
Yes, you missed a good game. The enemies aren't any shittier than Metroid's regular crew (unless your definition of shitty enemies is creatures that actually try to attack) and the timed exploration worked out really well. Beyond that it also had a cool weakness/strength system among the weapons and enemies that was similar to Metroid Prime's, and some good platforming level design throughout.
Yeah, the initial gun at the beginning of the game was a bit annoying as it was harder to hit enemies than it should've been due to lots of small hit boxes, but the other weapons do just fine.
This is five dollars at Circuit City.
